Once again, great demonstration! 4017 and 555 were the first ICs I bought "back in the day". It's amazing how versatile that IC pair can be, when combined with few extra components.

Hi David Watts (sorry, I previously called you David. , I am wondering if you might have a schematic for a 16-Step dual-4017 circuit and if so, would you be willing to share it, please? Everyone out there who knows how seems to withhold it like it's the street address to the Holy Grail, and it's very frustrating. Any help, David? Can you wire this to produce randon numbers?

Generally the output will be random data on power on but I wouldn't guarantee it. You could hook it up to a 555 and have the clock connected to the output via a button which would disconnect on press giving you a pseudo random output.

Can I use cd4017be instead of 4017bp? Please guide me.

Yes, B just means it has a buffered output and e or p is the package. The ICs will work exactly the same.
