Hi John, this video popped up in my recommended feed. Just want to say that the 6” shorts look great on you. They allow for some of you quad to show through, which makes you legs look more athletic and muscular. As long as you continue to train legs in the gym don’t be afraid to show a little of that hard work off. I’m 26, 6’ and wear 5” & 6” inseam usually and have gotten used to showing a lot of my thighs off. It felt weird at first but now I honestly could care less. And no, I don’t think shorter shorts on older men are age inappropriate. If you have decent calves and thighs and are comfortable showing them then do it. I’m super glad to see an older gentleman discussing fashion for men over 40 because I don’t think it’s discussed enough but should be, so good on you!

I'm in a hot climate. I've been having great luck with shorts in a linen-cotton blend. They're much more breathable than chino-style shorts. Since I'm 5'11" or so, I've been getting 9" inseam shorts. I could probably wear 8" inseams also, but that's a less common length (from what I've seen).

3-5 inches inseam are the best in general especially in hot weather. After 6 then it becomes the Bermuda shorts . Bermudas! And i,m 5,11 , early 50s.

I just bought 3 pairs of the J Crew stretch chinos in 7 in length as well. I’m an athletic 6 ft tall and 200 lbs. The 33 inch waist fits me perfectly. I plan on buying more for the summer !

I'm 5'8 and like mine about 2" above the knee but I am going for a looser fit with some khaki safari shorts. For really hot days and going to the beach a looser fit is more comfortable. For shirts nothing clingy like knits. Cut and sewn linen or cotton is cooler for really hot days.

Just slightly above the knee is perfect no matter what your age.... No cuff, if it's too long hem it.... For material i have ditch my chino and jeans because currently i live in tropical country and polyester, nylon and baby Terry are the best material....thin and easy to wash....

Last summer CBS Sunday Morning did a story about how the shorter men’s shorts are coming back. Part of the reason is because a man’s legs are the last thing to go. If you’re reasonably fit your legs are going to look good a lot longer.

@@MichaelNJohnson hey Michael, I have and normally wear a 36” waist in Wrangler 936DEN Slim. But, My Chubbies are Size 35” and fit fine. As a reference the RL Polo shorts in khaki size 36 are too small. I recommend shopping at Poshmark. Its a good way to take a chance on unfamiler brand with less $$. The chubbies look like khaki / cotton but they have some measure of stretch. I love em.

I was just shopping for shorts today. Every tag displayed the inseam length. I'm sad to say I'm over 40 and I still don't know my optimal inseam length for shorts - so I really appreciate this video! After seeing this, I will figure out my optimal inseam length - and remember that number. If I may, for you, my first impressions on the 6" inseam was "youthful / sporty looking". The 7" inseam struck me as "going out for lunch" restaurant appropriate. Agree that the 10" inseam did not flatter you. Thanks for the visual representations! This really helps a lot!!!

Great overview! A great way to build up that 3-4 inch area between knee and bottom of shorts is training with front squats in the gym, or if not comfortable with that, the seated leg extension machine, nice slow tempo - knowing your legs look good in the shorter style of shorts really gives you the confidence to wear them.

Hi John. Glad to hear that shorter and more tapered shorts are making a comeback. I was in my 20's back in the 80's so I have a bias toward shorter shorts.Besides if you are genetically gifted or go to the gym and work those wheels why not show them off.🏋🦵 Hopefully the days of the longer baggier shorts are on their way out ( although the NBA hasn't gotten the memo yet ) .BTW did you just cut off some denim jeans to make your denim shorts ? Got a kick out of you showing the old jean and cargo shorts guys worn back in the 80's -90's. Still see guys wearing them now! Definitely noticed shopping how men's shorts are getting shorter. I am 5'4', but 62 years old. Regardless of height, short shorts would not look good, unless I had thighs like a "Chubbies" model, (and I don't). The 7 and 8 inch shorts are my best choices.
