Nice list John. May I suggest adding the humble handkerchief, for everyday carry. What a wonderful, compact unobtrusive little tool it is.

You get a like from me because of mentioning the tie bar. My grandma introduced me to the tie bar when I was in my early teens. She loved when my late grandpa would wear one and she got me wearing them too. They hold my ties in place, they’re stylish, and I have received a good bit of compliments when I have worn them. Thanks!!

The leather briefcase/briefbag/messenger bag are very important indeed. But one item I would have added to the list is a well-crafted leather overnight/weekender bag. It doesn't have to match the messenger bag but they should compliment each other. Enjoyed the video John. Thanks Mike

I enjoyed this video. There are so many simple says that a mature man can elevate his look. I fold my pocket square in different ways to suit the time of day and the occasion. With my tie I use a Half Windsor knot in the daytime and a Full Windsor in the evening. Along the same lines as the pocket square I would suggest a lapel pin. I wear a small blue Forget-Me-Not. I also carry a small set of nail clippers in a leather case. They have allowed me to come to the rescue in the past...much like the safety pin I keep in the collar of every jacket I own.

Another great video with useful information. Except for the information about watches, you were spot on! If you want an inexpensive watch, yes MVMT or Vincero are ok, but they are without any horological significance, instead look into some of the plethora of microbrand watches on offer nowadays. You can get A LOT of watch for the money and have a timepiece that can outlive you, instead of those fashion brand watches being pushed out onto the public nowadays that will only last a couple years at best.

Totally agree. These fashion watches are trash. You’d be better off with a Timex as they at least have provenance. MVMT, Vincero, Invictus….just adds to the fast fashion waste. Use and throw away as you were never invested in the first place.

Agree with the card holder. I’m a minimalist with what I carry and I’ve used a card holder for about 15 years. When I had to replace mine a few years ago I found local stores carried few if any so I ordered about 8 different models on Amazon to try for myself (free returns). You really need to have the card holder in hand to see how many cards fit, how easily the cards slide out, how big the card holder is.

Great advice! As someone who used to sell men’s clothing back in the 1980s, I learned then what to do and what not to do, but it’s always good to refresh. Some days I sport a simple leather bracelet and other days a single beaded one from King Baby. I only wear one ring on each hand, always. I just lost 30 pounds and have to get my older John Varvatos suit refitted. Tapering the legs and loosing some length as well. I do love and own many higher end watches. From Oris to Omega and Panerai. All about the subtle changes that they make. I’m 59 years old.

My dream watch is a Panerai!! Oris make some beautiful pieces as well!!! I just picked up my first high end watch. I got a Rolex Datejust with the grey dial and absolutely love it. I have seriously changed my wardrobe up quite a bit just so I can wear it often lol...
@wadebolderman32504 жыл бұрын
Joshua & Rose Bartley I do that too. Congrats on getting that Rolex! Hope you enjoy it. My two Pams are the 1351 titanium 44mm and the 662 Radiomir with an alligator strap. Truth is with these Panerai, you can wear them with anything you like. Wearing my Oris Divers Sixty Five today. It has a dark green dial and Oris green striped nato dual deployant strap.
@joshuaandrosebartley8964 жыл бұрын
Wade Bolderman oh man I bet they are beautiful!! I actually got a great price on the Rolex. I got it from a friends father and he knew how bad I wanted another one as I had a old 1950’s Rolex on a leather strap my grandfather left me when he passed away and someone actually broke into my condo I was living in at the time and didn’t touch nothing else but my Rolex. It was a absolutely beautiful piece but it was far from one of the more expensive pieces. It may have been worth $5000 or so. It needed serviced and so on so they probably might have got $3,000 for it. But with that said it was worth a million dollars to me as it was the only thing I had of my grandfathers other than a couple of his Army uniforms from while he was over in Vietnam. So it absolutely broke my heart to know someone I had to have known would steal something so meaningful from me. But anyways as I was saying his father knew I wanted another one and instead of taking it to a broker or Jewelry store and not getting much for it he sold it to me. I gave him a little over $6000 for it total. He let me pay him payments for 3 months so I was able to give him 2k a month and that helped me a ton! I just recently had it serviced and paid $950 dang dollars for that lol. But now it is absolutely breathtakingly beautiful! I am so happy I went with the grey face as it matches stuff so much easier than a blue or what not would you know.. I think my next watch is going to be an Omega. They have a Stainless Steel watch that of course when I’m talking about it I can’t remember the name of it lol. But it’s absolutely beautiful and is only about $3500 give or take for a nice used one!! But sorry for such a long reply!!!
@wadebolderman32504 жыл бұрын
Joshua & Rose Bartley yes, an Omega can be a great buy because of the less expensive aspect, around $3500.00 to $5000.00 and a used one is possibly cheaper. They do perform well and have quite a history behind them being the first watch to the moon. Sad that your grandfather’s Rolex was stolen from you, that has got to hurt! However your newer Datejust, after the servicing, I’m sure, is like having a brand new watch now! Rolex being known for replacing worn out parts and polishing an older watch to where it looks like new when you get it back. I’m sure it looks showroom fresh now! Word of warning though, don’t get the Rolex polished too often because they do take off metal every time they polish. Just something to keep in mind. Sounds like you worked out a great transaction in purchasing it too!

A "luxury" watch can also be an heirloom piece that can be used to mark a key milestone anniversary, birthday etc this is something that you can't put a price on. A classic premium leather jacket is something that can be multi generational. I mainly agree on other points. As a former German Car owner for years and would no longer buy, there is a tendency to over engineer with higher long term maintenance as a result, most German brands have also adopted the Russian Doll school of design so easier to move down a model as you get older, never buy new

Hi, John. I had a question about bracelets and necklaces for older guys. On a daily basis, I wear a watch & a ring on each hand. I have some bracelets & wear them, as you do, one at a time. I was kinda hoping you would have mentioned necklaces. I have some long, medium & short. I don't want to look like a pimp but would a nice short gold chain be all right to wear? I'm sure it's all about preference & I shouldn't care what others think but unfortunately I do & I have come to really respect your opinion. So your advice I would appreciate. Take care!

Question: What car does that key belong to? "Now you know what car I drive." Nope, don't recognize the key. Maserati? I drive a Range so I know it's not that. Just curious. PS... I enjoy your vids (and subscribed). My go to uniform for years has been all black (Think John Varvatos), quality clothes, but not really taking risks. I used to model back in the day so trying different styles is maybe easier for me to get onboard with, as I had to wear clothes I hated on shoots/shows. In the UK the law is pretty strict even on pocket knives. Personally I carry a Leatherman. Three inch blade or greater and you’re going to get prosecuted.

@christopherhume88964 жыл бұрын
Our knife laws in the UK are a bit stupid. I used to carry a Leatherman everywhere except into London but am wary now because of the locking blade. Some judge decided that locking blade = fixed blade therefore making it technically illegal. Same problem with my beautiful Opinels. No policeman would ever bother you but it just takes one busybody to complain. I've switched to Swiss Army as it's non-locking but I miss the pliers and decent screwdrivers.

As someone who wears suspenders every day, I would like to weigh in on this subject. Please for the love of God, take your pants and have buttons sewn in. It costs about $15.00, and it steps up your game 1,000%! Clip on suspenders make you look like a little boy. Furthermore, the clip on suspenders don't stay fastened well, and this gets worse over time. Yes they are cheeper, but there is a reason for that. I even wear them on jeans. Another thing you can do to step up your game is to wear a bow tie, and not a pre-tied one either. If you can tie your shoes you can tie a bowtie. A pre-tied bowtie can be spotted a mile away, and it smacks of cheapness and looks like you got it from a low end men's store that sells ties and pocket squares in matching sets. I always get multiple complements when I am out and about from strangers telling me they really like my look because of the bow tie. It really sets you a part from the crowd. Additionally, you need not be wearing a suit or a sport coat to don a bowtie. I often wear them with just a shirt and sometimes add a vest. In both cases, you still look casually dressed with flair, class, and style. You come off as someone that cares about how you look and present yourself. Unlike the guys walking around in public in pajama pants or sweats and a t-shirt.

Watch again worth spending the money on get something good and that means not getting a Rolex trying to be a wannabe. As far as belts go I would stay away from things like Gucci and Louis Vuitton it's tacky and again you look like you're trying to be something you're not. If you're going to go for the logo more subtle would be Ferragamo or Hermes or just a nice and simple system like what John is talking about

I may be a bit old fashioned but if I'm going somewhere and wearing a suit or sports jacket I tuck a nice pen in my inside breast pocket. It comes in handy for jotting some bit of info on a business card for example. I always regret whenever I forget to bring a pen. (Those times when I'm not actually carrying a bag with me.)

People at Movement are not awesome. Rather disappointed that you should think that. Their watches are way over priced crap. Same as Daniel Wellington...

It's from Ridge. The same people that make a super slim wallet.

Try some higher end watches, people do notice. I get it that you are sponsored, but your watch is the most important thing you can wear. Not with you on the tie bar. They were in when I was in college in the 1970's and I wouldn't be caught dead in one today.

I think a lot of older guys are missing out on accessories. Especially watches. I get compliments or comments on my watch pretty regularly. I also think guys don’t take advantage of wearing different belts. There are so many great options in leather and fabric. The only disagreement I have is with bracelets. I think maybe the guys on the younger side of your demographic can get away with them, but not older gents.

Well. If you really want the MVMT Style you'd be better off just getting a 4.99 lookalike from AliExpress taking into account is the exact same one and spend the remaining 95 bucks to buy an actual watch and not just overpriced crap

A pocket knife… wtf 😂😂😂

Thank you, but I have to admit, those watches are just over priced. Even if you like their design you can get that for one 10th of the price on aliexpress. MVMT is a scam.

Yep, the day I leave my folding knife at home is the day I need my knife. Never fails. An EDC knife separates the men from the boys.

I've seen some people put their coins in their wallet. This is illegal. Put them directly in your pocket.

I love having a few coins in my wallet. I would rather have a little more bulk there than coins in my pocket which are not only messy as coins are dirty they also prematurely wear pocket linings out

I like your content, but that you recommended MVMT was a great disappointment, I hope it was a mistake and you do not repeat it

Movement? No no no no overpriced crap.... it’s actually a knock off on wish watches. Save up and buy a good automatic. Doesn’t have to break the bank, but please don’t spend your cash on crap.

I know the bills keep coming. We all need that little extra income. But MVMT? I collect watches and after hearing that you wear Orient, I thought you might also. I was wrong in that assumption. MVMT in cheap. In. Every. Way. Apparently income is more important than integrity. At least stay away from
