We have a rare opportunity to test out some unique 12ga. slugs that S&W tried to convince LE agencies would be a good idea to adopt. They claimed they would penetrate automotive engine blocks, which would disable the vehicle. In order to do this, the slug would have to first pass through other obstacles along the way and with luck, it might hit something vital on the engine. Whether or not these slugs were EVER successfully deployed in this manner, we may never know.

Most modern powders (US produced, post-cold war) are designed to degrade safely, meaning the round will lose pressure over time. Some ammo, like old WW2 corrosive stuff, can degrade and increase pressure, so they become unsafe if not kept properly and will blow up your gun. Been watching periodically for years, glad you're still going man!
@GunFunZS
@GunFunZS 3 жыл бұрын
That claim has been widely debated. I've never seen anybody come up with conclusive documentation one way or another about whether this is true. In general most powders seem to be pretty stable as long as you keep him in a controlled temperature environment.
@GunFunZS
@GunFunZS 3 жыл бұрын
@@Krobear I did read it. I was disputing the part about designed to degrade. People have been saying that about powders and primers forever kind of like 556 is designed to wound. Whether powders do degrade is a different issue but I've never seen any documentation that can support the claim that they are designed to do so. I would be interested in seeing that sort of documentation, if it does exist. I just don't think it works to state it as a fact without some sort of evidence somewhere. And I would be happy for somebody to find that evidence.

I've got a crate of barely post WW2 (1947) soviet surplus. The stuff shoots better than any modern ammo I've put in it!!!
@trvsfrnd
@trvsfrnd 3 жыл бұрын
@@confederate2506 I might have the timeframe/areas slightly wrong but an example of this is Turkish 8mm mauser that was produced with German support, also czech copies of 7.9mm Kurz, however the powder is composed, it became over-pressure with time, aka they didn't degrade safely. If you're worried about it you can always google and find out if people have had experiences with rounds getting hotter. A lot of surplus stuff has sat in boxes for decades, maybe moved occasionally, exposed to heat, and around the time they were using a bunch of new expedient chemicals to produce gunpowder. Forgotten Weapons did a vid about this.
@trvsfrnd
@trvsfrnd 3 жыл бұрын
@@GunFunZS These are verified facts, about certain ammo types. Turkish produced 8mm mauser made 70-80 yrs ago has blown up many machine guns in the past decade because it didn't degrade safely. Degrade on a chemical level, you want powder that's designed to become low-pressure over time. All smokeless nitro powder made in the past decades are all chemically composed to decompose in a safe manner. This isn't some "gun myth" telling you not to store your 5.56.

For comparison a few of those new Winchesters or some 3" shells with new powder at safe max pressure for 1oz slugs to get 1700ft/sec would've been interesting.

Hello to Jeff and Danny - Hope you saved one of those slugs and that box for historical purposes - but if not, the video will suffice for that. There was a lot of S & W ammo back then, but apparently, they didn't find it profitable enough to continue... nice video as always. Get well soon, Scott..!! Steve

@@Krobear Very true. I think we will all have to wait until Mark Serbu gets finished with his diagnostics. From what he (Serbu) said on his own channel it _sounds_ like Scott had a few more rounds from that batch. Hopefully those were sent to Serbu along with the carcass of the RN-50

Given the magnitude of deformation visible on those ballistic helmets, I have no doubt whatsoever that the wearers would have suffered multiple catastrophic skull fractures and crushing entry wounds resulting in immediate loss of life! Even at much degraded velocity these rounds impart a huge amount of energy into the target, door locks and hinges would fail under fire from fresh rounds fired from close range. Thank you for this interesting, informative and entertaining video, I imagine that the antique engine nerds were gnashing their remaining teeth and pulling out the last wisps of their long gone hair at the sight of that old engine meeting the 12 gauge projectile...

Wrapping his 50 cal would not have stopped the cap. Threads can only be torqued so many times. Thats why it failed so hard. It if it was a bolt instead. The bolt would have blown out the side or barrel burst open. Price wise that gun was an inferior design and option for price range. Literally 200 dollars more gets you a bolt gun in ar type set up from SHTF 50 or even Serbu Bolt action 50, although pre pandemic prices. Things went up a little from then.
