Michael Lisi You must be a glutton for punishment! I haven't yet had the opportunity to shoot anything bigger than a .300 H&H magnum, and my own single high-powered rifle is a Ruger M77 .30-06, but I'd like to see how some of the heavier artillery is to fire. Oh, I forgot to mention that I have fired a .50 BMG, but that was the M2, so I didn't really have to deal with the recoil because those are tripod-mounted. It sure was a hell of a lot of fun, though! Hello from Australia. I built a .458 WM in the late 1970's. I used a 24" barrelled Mauser Magnum action in the white and a good-quality semi-inletted stock with handsome grain. The inletting took quite a long time without using long gunsmith's inletting studs; fit, smoke, file, refit, repeat. I set the barrel ring of the receiver and the first 4" of the barrel in bedding epoxy with one recoil cross-pin. I deliberately kept the stock as full as appropriate in order to keep the weight at 10 pounds. I fitted a Williams Foolproof receiver sight and a Williams shorty front sight with a medium white bead. It turned out a very lovely economically-priced rifle and not at all difficult to carry and shoot. The .458 WM is a peach.

I had a budget 458 Win Mag built on a MARK X action. Whoever had it built must have intended to carry it alot as it sported a relatively thin 20-inch barrel with a aperture rear sight. A nice thing about rifles in 458 Win Mag is the prices for used ones are pretty decent - probably because of the limited use in the lower 48 and high ammo cost.

Hunter_Jordan is right - the 458 is all about penetration, and not explosiveness. High velocity rounds like a 300 WM will do more damage to gel blocks, but generally won't penetrate as far.

Idk bout anyone else but I really hope these guys get ahold of a .600 or 700 Nitro Express and do some ballistic gel testing

Noah Redinger hell yeah or at least a 577
@noahredinger18657 жыл бұрын
They need to start using ballistic gel from silver shamrock. They use Ballistic gels that are made like actual human head and torso. Place it at the 600 yard mark and shoot it with a .50 BMG control chaos
@stephenferguson63636 жыл бұрын
i shot a few elephants with a 700 nitro i had built i wasnt that impressed. the 577 dose everything the 700 dose with less recoil and a lighter gun even better was a 505 gibbs shooting a 600 grainer at 2300.
@ludecom-cz1wz6 жыл бұрын
Just saw another youtuber who said the 600 nitro was $52.00 a round. If that is true that would be a tad cost prohibitive.

Another nice hint for helping absorb the recoil on these big bores is (as a right handed shooter) making sure you keep that right elbow high - like you do, have the elbow pointing almost to the horizon, instead of at 45 degrees to the ground, or directly at the ground.
@f5tornadeau7 жыл бұрын
GReeNORB is that true? I would think the opposite is true. If you raise your elbow, you’re spreading your shoulder/upper pectoral muscles, giving yourself less natural padding. I can’t say I’ve ever thought about it much as the most powerful rifle cartridge I’ve shouldered is a .300 Win mag.
@BatcatCA7 жыл бұрын
f5tornadeau hold your left hand where the butt of the rifle would go in your right shoulder. Raise your elbow and feel your pec and shoulder tense more. Compare the feeling when your elbow points at the ground. The tense muscle helps absorb/resist the heavy recoil more than a slack one does. It's the technique I use when shooting a .375 Ruger, which has rather a lot of recoil.
@lachlanmackay65866 жыл бұрын
It is true, its the exact technique archers use for back/shoulder tension

I own a Ruger M 77 in .458 Win. Mag. just like the one featured in your video. The older M 77's , with the tang safety, are push feed, which is a questionable feature for a dangerous game rifle, but I use mine for hunting White Tail Deer in Minnesota. I load it down to 45-70 velocities with the same 300 grain Hornady Hollow point bullet I use in my Marlin .45-70 Lever Gun. You can load the .458 down to between 2100 and 2300 fps with this bullet, which would be the high end of velocities in a 45-70.Regards,Gungineer

Shooting that many .458 mag rounds in one day you are a certified Masochist! I had a Weatherby M k V in .458 mag and even with a shotgun recoil pad on it after 5 rounds IT HURT!
@joesanders68985 жыл бұрын
The only time I ever shot a Winchester 458 Magnum, I made the mistake of shooting it from the prone position. I couldn't effectively use my right arm for 2 or 3 days afterward. The recoil was so bad that it separated the lenses in a 4 power Weaver scope.

You guys are F#$%^& hillarious and professional and you are nuts for firing the power wagon .458 target shooting like it was nothing!
@harrymiram66215 жыл бұрын
WHY standing so close? Retreat to 150-250 yds to REALLY see damage! And stuff some pork loin or Boston butt in pumpkins for dramatic effect!
@smokedbrisket30334 жыл бұрын
458 WM has a looping trajectory at that distance, not a whole lot flatter than a 45-70. certainly do-able, but also certainly not ideal, at least not for the critters 458 WM was intended for shooting.

Cool. Rifle chambered for 458 Lott will also shoot those rounds. No real issue shooting either. No sling is my preference. Merry Christmas Y'all.
@kevi1525 жыл бұрын
I have used a 458 win mag since the age of 18 yrs. I use a double barrel over and under made in austria and my ammunition is the original 1959 loads. If you hold the rifle correctly there will be no issues regarding recoil. Right hand firm and left as a rest ( for the right handed ). There is no need to prepare yourself for the recoil as it might cause you to flinch. Have shot big game out to 150 yards with the open sights as I do not use telescopic sights on the 458 win mag. My small calibre rifle is a 375h&h mag , which I have used since I was 12yrs of age ( minimum calibre for dangerous game ).

Why not get a .458 Lott? It is more powerful, fits in the same system and you can shoot .458 Winchester Magnum out of it.
@MooseHunter3307 жыл бұрын
You can still get CZ550s in .458 Lott.
@waltlars36877 жыл бұрын
As I recall the 458 Lott is a 375 H&H blown out to 458 and is a much longer cartage the 458 Win can used in the long action sized rifle actions like the 30-06 the 458 Lott requires a longer action
@MooseHunter3307 жыл бұрын
Well, that's parially true. The .375 Holland&Holland does fit in a standard length Mauser system, but you do need to lengthen the magazine in order to feed the rounds properly. And I guess the ammo wouldn't be too much of a problem, since Eric handloads.
@waltlars36877 жыл бұрын
MooseHunter330 just run a 458 Dia resizer ball through a 375 H&H case Lott knew there were lots of 375's rifles so it's a inexpensive way to make a modern big game rifle with the power of the classic African safari doubles on He is too Fucking Close critters
