In late August 2023 investigators recovered multiple items of interest after searching the former Park City, Kansas, home of Dennis Rader, aka the BTK killer. Authorities now consider him a prime suspect in several unsolved cases, including the death of Cynthia Dawn Kinney.
For almost 20 years, a Kansas husband and father was suspected of murdering his wife, Vicki Wegerle, but the murderer was really the BTK killer. I'm so impressed with the kids who grew up with people thinking their father was their mother's killer and still turned out fine and close knit. Exceptional upbringing I'd say.

Steven’s story has always been one of the most heartbreaking things I’ve ever heard. I saw a different interview and this poor man was completely devastated and he shoulders all the blame because he opened the door. Just knowing that it’s 100% not his fault and still knowing that if it was me, I would feel the same guilt. It’s a life sentence of heartache when he has committed no crime.

I heard no mention of a dad in the home here, maybe one reason why the poor guy has carried the idea into his adulthood that he had to be the man of the house(?) Granted we don't know all the circumstances, as per usual with these shows, but I always feel for the kids the most. He said he was out "buying soup" for their mother (say WHAT??) Not having a dad in the home is a horribly sad thing for any kid unless the dad is a total monster.

Back then, we were taught it was polite to go answer the door of someone knocked! It was never his fault, but kids take that on. I wish he would let go of it, that monster would have come in if the door was opened to him or not.

Lie detectors have a horrible record. They don't detect lies, they detect stress. And it's normal to be stressed when you are under suspicion.

The lie detector doesn't detect stress it detects the poligraphers opinion of the suspect I passed 1 and lied on every question even my name then the second time told the truth and passed it detects a rise in blood pressure change in respiration and sweat on the fingers since you can't take any medication or use drugs or alcohol for 48 hrs before the test without my BP meds my BP was through the roof I was sweating in a cold room and had erratic breathing I had a "slight" stroke hrs after my second test

I grew up in Wichita, during this era. It is hard to convey the high level of Pure FEAR women felt. This documentary didn't mention how he would stake out a woman's house, cut the phone line, and hide inside waiting for her to return home. That became a routine for Wichita / Wichita area women coming home--immediately to go telephone, pick it up and listen for dial tone. It was such an automatic routine--unlock door, walk to phone, listen for dial tone. This was before cell phones. This monster terrorized the entire city. So glad he is in prison for the rest of his worthless life. My only regret is the death penalty wasn't available then. If ever a man deserves the DP--it's this guy. I won't even write his name because I refuse to acknowledge him.

I thought he escaped the death penalty because he admitted to 10 murders, they are talking of revoking that deal now after discovering evidence there may be 1 if not more victims. I think he kept 1 killing a secret, like a "special" one almost, just for him to keep in his mind. He's a sick individual. I hope the families of the missing girl gets answers soon.

I've seen multiple BTK documentaries over the years, but wow this one really highlights the trauma he inflicted to the families of his victims. It makes you truly realise the magnitude of his crimes.

To me, his face should always be blurred so he doesn't get the fame he wanted. If they had used to find him, that would be different, but afterward, no more images, no more use of his given nickname for himself, but the media makes money on docs. I'm sure this has taken a heavy toll on him from his personal relationships to how he deals with all that stress. It wouldn't be surprising if he were to have turned to drugs or alcohol to numb the pain. He was just a kid doing what kids did back then.

This can't only impact the social aspect of one's life but also his career. If you are a suspect, people will distance themselves from you out of fear which is understandable. However, the impact this can have on one's life is probably irreversible.

Police used "lie detectors" for the purpose that something may come out of it. not the result per se, but how people answers on the questions that may lead to a lead. He was a suspect because spouse's are the usual suspects in murders of a spouse. and most people are too ignorant when the word "suspect" is considered criminal.

Thank you so so much for this episode, although it is older: RIP Det Landwehr. I have always been fascinated with the Wichita BTK story, but was tired of only hearing about the victimizer. Hearing the victim’s story and a show dedicated to the lasting impact of experiencing such trauma is very important, in my opinion. My eyes welled with tears as I heard of those adult children STILL AFFECTED by the community blaming their FATHER for the crime; this is extremely sobering for me. Gosh. I pray I never verbally hurt people, especially based on assumption due to popular opinion rather than facts!

There was no system mistake the husband is always a suspect especially when he never comes home for lunch but the day he drives all the way across the city to do so he finds her dead 15 minutes after getting home and finding the baby alone after seeing someone else driving her car it's a good thing the system didn't fail and manufacture evidence against him after failing 2 polygraphs

That happened to my teenage daughter. Money went missing from her job. The cops gave polygraphs to all the kids working there, without asking the parents, then lied to them and told them they all failed, and tried to get them to rat each other out. It terrified her so much she quit her job and ran away from home. We didn't find out until two years later that all the kids passed.

After watching true crime for few years, now I am questioning myself for being so interested in cases like this. My sister has chickens and ducks. She said she doesn’t killed them, it is only to harvest eggs. Sometimes animals from the are do killed them, and we all cry. Her dog was killed by a snake, and we all cry. These monsters are wired differently, they most to be.

​@@laurenmay2098 I watch a KZbinr who has a farm. He raises some animals for meat and then has chickens & ducks for eggs. He has someone else process the meat animals, but even the ones he's raising for slaughter...he treats them just like he would any other animal, with love and respect. And he does get attached to them, but he's also realistic and knows from the beginning that it will be hard for him when it's time, but it's the reality of raising animals for meat. And I respect him for it, even if I couldn't do something like that myself.

And to think the Devil actually peeled his 'saintly' mask for little Stevie to see him face to face long before anyone else had; and to witness first hand his evil deeds long before a confession was even deemed possible. It's very possible she never actually got to hear it or even if it sounded vaguely familiar, in an out of context situation like that, your brain may not even recognize that it is familiar unless you hear more than just a sentence or two. I barely recognize my own father's voice on the phone sometimes because we barely talk on the phone, just in person. So when I randomly have to talk on the phone with him, it feels odd and unless I already know it's him from caller ID or if I called him myself, I might not immediately recognize it. My mom is a different story because I have talked to her on the phone a lot so I know her voice over the phone pretty well. And we also don't know if he might have tried to disguise his voice in some way too... there's soo many reasons why she might not have realized.

The odds of Steve reading this is zero to none, but instead of him thinking its his fault his mother has died, he needs to realize if it werent him opening the door probably him and his siblings would have suffered the same fate of poor little Josephine and her little brother. Rader asked him if he recognized him and then saw steven again and because of this one interaction their little lives thankfully were saved. It certainly was never his fault ❤

The love binding this beautiful family emanates from the poor husband and children. Hearing them speak so beautifully about their mum, overwhelms me completely. Her poor husband is totally broken and seeing him like that, is very upsetting. I wish, I knew how to make them better. ❤❤❤

It always horrifies me thinking about the torturing of animals during the early lives of these serial killers. No telling what kinds of pains & sufferings little kittens and puppies have endured at the hands of these young future killers. This is one of the top 5 symptoms that these kids are going to display if they are going to grow up to be predators/killers; so parents need to be on watch for their kids doing bad things to animals and immediately get them some mental help. Dahmer's father discovered a shed in the backyard where young Jeffrey had collected animal bones and had some animals in jars of acid dissolving. THAT is NOT a normal thing a young boy should be doing in his spare time!! If Dahmer's father could have gotten him help at this point things could have been different. With BTK he could have gotten help too if his parents had been observant enough to discover those magazines with covers with women in bondage, that was 1 of their red flags.

The wives of the Green River Killer and John Wayne Gacy also had no idea they were married to the killer! Gary Ridgway's wife changed her name and moved to an undisclosed location. Gacy once said he cleaned up the last drop of blood before his wife walked in the door. It's concerning that so many people go online and bring total strangers to their home for a hook up. I've studied Dark Personalities in depth for 10 yrs. People can seem very nice and caring but there's always red flags.

John Wayne Gacy apparently had a couple wives...the first did the right thing and divorced him when he was charged with rape. The second is when he started killing. She still married him even though she knew about that past rape charge and ignored the smell of rot in her house..and the constant "construction" in her own basement and all the furniture that ended up getting broken in her house. Personally, even if she didn't catch on that he was murdering boys, he should have been a red flag from what she did see.

I grew up 20 miles from Wichita and moved here as a young adult. It was terrifying. The Otero family was murdered a few blocks from where I live. The lives he destroyed with his evil. Recently they even located journals buried where his house used to be. He may killed others in Oklahoma. Rest in Peace Ken Landwehr you did a good job.

My god this was difficult to watch. I kept looking away from the screen even though I've watched so many true crime documentaries. I feel for the victims and their families. Especially Steve. After watching this, what I find most frightening is how someone who looked and behaved so sociable and normal could hide such a deviant and twisted mind and personality. Everyone in his family, church and work thought they knew Dennis Rader but they only saw the false image he projected. Just knowing it is possible opens the door to doubting everyone else. All the people who knew him were victims too.

There was a boy in a neighborhood I lived in that killed small animals. His family ended up moving out the neighborhood because of this crazy kids actions. I remember the mom crying to me about what to do with this kid. She knew he was not right in the head. I had a listing a few years ago and I met the creepy kid/son of the owner. You know when you meet these people. You just ignore it and dismiss it and make excuses for it. The creepy kid I met at a listing was arrested soon after for awful things. When I heard he was arrested I went back to those initial feelings I had when I met him. You just ignore those feelings and push them down.
