That's a clever setup. I do have to ask you why you chose the 4L60. I'm sure you explained it in another video and I'm sure there was a good reason for it. Also, have you read into how some guys are using the factory computers as a stand alone transmission controller? I'm assuming it would allow you to still tune the transmission on a laptop but I like the setup you have here cause it's so simple. And really there can't be much money involved in it. I like it. Would a 4L80 be operated the same way?
@MattsMadnessOfficial6 жыл бұрын
yes 4l80e is the same way but the pinout on the plug is a bit different, I use the 4l60e because they're tough as hell and it has overdrive with a lockup converter , Im at the end of 3rd gear on the limiter by the end of the 1/8th ( when everything is working )4.10 gears and I built the truck for quarter mile , and I have never had good luck with 700r4's even though the 4l60 is about the same thing , got a 4l60e in my work truck 304K+ miles on it and I beat the shit out of it and haul lots of weight all the time I am so mean to that truck and that trans has never slipped or shifted funny or anything acts like its still new , makes me want to put it in the s10 lol and yeah thought about using the factory computer but I ended up with the msd setup, not sure it was worth it 1000 bucks for everything just to unhook it and use 5 bucks worth of switches

Let me share with you what I found today. When I pulled my 4l60e I left the range switch switch. From the 7 pin connector on the range switch I grounded the black wire. On the four wire plug I tapped the "a" solenoid into the grey wire, its grounded in any forward gear. Youre done with the range switch, go the the other side. Run a 10a amp fused ignition feed to pin E, Pin A to range switch as discussed, and pin B youre going to put to pin N. pin N is a pressure switch that grounds in reverse and 1st. There you have it, a 1 wire, no added switches manual shift 4l60e.
@ClumsyCars6 жыл бұрын
next I am going to feed the electronic vss signal to the vss signal buffer to allow my truck to control lockup on its own, will probably tie into the 3rd gear pressure switch so it can only lock in 3 or 4
@MattsMadnessOfficial6 жыл бұрын
good job...but this trans does not have a range switch so I had to do it this way , you are still doing the same thing I am only using the range switch to do what my micro switch does
@MattsMadnessOfficial6 жыл бұрын
and it sounds like you are still using a computer , I have no computer on this setup
@ClumsyCars6 жыл бұрын
There is no computer to control the trans, it's full manual control. I am just converting the 700r4 lockup system for use on the 4l60e. The range switch is trivial, the break though is the lo/reverse pressure switch controlling the B solenoid so you dont have to run a switch inside. You just connect pins B and N together.

Assuming you have a way to electronically monitor the speed sensor and convert it to a readable signal, it seems like a relatively simple project for an Arduino microcontroller with a relay board to control the shift points depending on the speed of the vehicle. Would cost about $40 in parts and a little experimenting. If I get to where I need to do this on one of my various project trucks I'll try it out. But it would be impossible to do without the basic info you provide in this video.
@MattsMadnessOfficial4 жыл бұрын
well tach signal you can get from hei, coil, or an injector then speed signal you can get from the output of the trans then tps signal yeah combine all 3 of those set shift points based off engine speed/vs load "tps"/speed of the output yeah that could work, you should do it great idea
@MattsMadnessOfficial4 жыл бұрын

@MattsMadnessOfficial6 жыл бұрын
yes not a problem on the street, sometimes you get a little bark on the 1-2 shift but its not a big deal and it shifts smooth if you run a stall converter .also full line pressure will not hurt a thing lots of computers and stock trucks have dual config on the shift strategy one for quiet smooth operation one for offroad/towing, what it does is run full line pressure and raise the shift points up a bit and the wot tps threshold
@jakemichael85866 жыл бұрын

@@sammy13nation94 should be links to other videos on this in the comments somewhere and the way the 3 switch setup works is you put it in drive/4th and you shift 1 through 4 with the switches never move the shifter, if you run the other setup you move the shifter every time you want to change gears and dont bother with any switches until you are at highway speeds and lockup the converter in 4th

@@MattsMadnessOfficial thanks again and I got that part, but what I'm confused in is how the shifter box mechanically does the same thing. I understand the switches powering and unpowering the solenoids to change gear using electrical current, but the ratchet shifter looks completely mechanical, so how does it get wired just for 4th gear then the micro switch enables first, how does it tell the transmission to be in 2nd and or 3rd? Sorry I keep asking so many questions and being generally confusing, I'm just trying to understand how it works before I spend the $330 ish on it lol

@@sammy13nation94 oh ok lol well if you tell the trans to be in 4th with the wiring it will manually shift into 2 nd 3rd and 4th with the shifter mechanically inside the trans only thing it wont do is 1st gear , why does this work ? I have no idea Im not a transmission guy lol but I do know it works and Ive used it on a few different things never had a problem with it , my old work truck was setup like this my s10 my t bucket and I setup my buddys jeep rod like this because it was a 4l60e , you don't have to use this shifter Im using you can use any shifter put the micro switch on the side of the trans so the shift arm hits the switch in 1st, you can do this to a factory column shifter that way and not spend any money , you can mount the switch anywhere really shift arm on the side of the trans on the side of the steering Colum under the hood

So.... why not use a manual?

The 4l60e is commonly joined to the 5.3l "ls" motors that are so abundant and affordable, but also solid reliable well engineered powertrains. This is one of the more insightful, full on standalone mods I've seen. The transmission becomes a whole new creature, one that sure as hell would be the envy of any older "autostick" driven vehicle

All I’m saying is are you having to use the switches the whole time
@MattsMadnessOfficial5 жыл бұрын
the point of this video is you do NOT have to use switches watch the whole video , only switch you ever touch driving if the torque converter lockup and thats only on the highway at speed

I was using that old switch panel to show how the setup I made works and how they shift with the solenoids , no wires hooked up to that panel in my hand lol

Does this work for the 4l80e?
@MattsMadnessOfficial4 жыл бұрын
yes but the wiring harness is pinned different at the plug so make sure you find the right schematic for your 4l80e

with a shifter , look at the new video about this, you can shift with the shifter full manual in every gear, no switches
