I have a 2001 4Runner that I used in about a foot of snow (in January or February 2015) and it worked surprisingly well! You really don’t know how useful 4x4 can be until you need it. I parked on wet grass (right off the street) woke up the next day to leave and tried to pull out in 2wd and it just spun tires. Then I put it in 4lo with the diff lock on and pulled immediately out.

clean, we have the same models and almost same mileage haha!. was going to invest in a lift but i think im going to get some Falken Wild Peak A/T with some pro comp wheels. do you go on /r/4runner?

+justin jimenez I highly recommend the Old Man Emu suspension lift complete from Toytec. Huge improvement in ride quality, handling, looks, etc. If the price isn't that much of a difference, you should consider getting BFG AT KO2's. I am running them on my 2006 4Runner and they are awesome. Great tread life, very little road noise, and they look awesome! I haven't been on /r/4runner. But I use t4r.org a lot. Great community over there!

New to 4runners...Bought an 01' a few months back. Had to use the 4Hi/4lo today for the first time on account of icy roads. Gotta say, I am NOT a fan on the way the T-case works. Could not disengage 4x4 when reached destination. When leaving work, truck wouldnt even move while in gear. I guess the T-case was in Neutral? Finally got the truck moving again but hard to say how I did it. Im confused about this process. 4x4 shifter is now in 4hi position with switch off. Is this the position it stays in while not in use? or would the 4x4 shifter stay in N? May be a dumb question but this has me confused....

It stays in the HI position when driving normally. To engage 4HI his the thumb bottom on the transfer case knob, keep the wheels straight, moving, with foot off the gas. Repeat to go back into RWD. To put in 4low (which I would never do on public roads), in 4HI stop and put the gear shift in neutral, move transfer case knob to 4lo. Put back in gear. Repeat backwards to go back to 4HI

Ok, thank you for the quick response. I have read on forums (t4r.org for example) that there has been some confusion on these 3rd gen 4wd systems. I appreciate it

I was told to never Lock the diff unless only stuck, also to never have Diff locked making turns?

Center diff lock you don't have to worry about that, only the rear diff lock which they stop putting them in after 2000. And even if your in the snow you still wouldn't have to worry about turning with a rear diff lock, you just can't be hauling ass because it only works in 4wd Low.

Good old Toyota 4x4. They don't make them like that anymore

+Evelyn Edwin Agreed! I love the 3rd Gen 4Runner! Currently have 4th Gen 2006 Sport Edition V8 but I'm always on the lookout for another clean 2001 or 2002 :)
