Love the channel, reminds me of myself when I was younger, unfortunately age keeps on going, I will be 81 soon. I used to clear out old orchards for a good friend of mine. I always enjoyed working a chainsaw and even had a screw type wood splitter that went on the back wheel, kind of dangerous but it worked. My dad would always want to come and help me, and we did this until his health deteriorated. Now I can’t do too much but I really enjoy your videos. Take care when you are working!!

The dual wheels and the ring and pinion gear ratio differences help a lot more than you think. If both trucks were duallys and the rear end was geared the same then the test would be more interesting. Find someone with a dually 5.9 with the same rear end and try again. The ring and pinion difference can change how a truck performs night and day. The truck weight difference has less impact than you think. The best upgrade I ever did to my truck was change the ring and pinion ratio.

The odds are you would still be ordering a new truck with the 5.9 if the emissions weren't there. The increase in displacement was because Dodge and Cummins knew the emissions would cripple the 5.9. I have both engines. A 05, 6 speed manual and a 09 automatic and a higher gear. The 09 had a 40hp chip and emissions delete. Before the delete I would say both trucks pulled pretty close. The delete woke the 09 right up and doubled the fuel mileage. My opinion, with the delete the 6.7 is a better engine. Without the delete I would rather stay with the pre-emission 5.9.

Love your video. Great job. I have had all 4 generations. As well as other makes. As a diesel mechanic, machinist and electrician I can certainly say that on a blue collar budget, nothing beats a 6.7 towing if deleted, tuned and studded. I might add that the 4th gens have super comfortable interiors on the long hauls.. However, on that same budget, nothing beats a 5.9/47re/48re at the drag strip/street/play truck. Many many reasons why.

A bit disappointed in my 5.9 I recently acquired. Got a great deal on an immaculate 06 with 128K miles. The truck was like it was off the show room. Took her on a 2500 mile road trip with the 11K travel trailer purchasing the super tuner and K&N intake. Did much better on the inclines without beating the hell out of her. Came home, on the freeway empty at around 80mph and seized the engine. Will not budge. Still have to get the pan off to take a good look at the journals but she is done. All this after replacing the Duramax. Too bad......

I found this channel because I’m looking for a tow rig for my horse trailer. After observing the newer diesels and their very high maintenance costs (DEF, EGR) I’m leaning towards a 5.9 and build it. Plus the newer trucks are very expensive. So, I’m heavily leaning towards a 5.9 with a manual 6-speed.
@VBELTandSON
@VBELTandSON 5 жыл бұрын
jwxfd Honestly that’s a good choice. Can’t go wrong with a 5.9. I love them. I would recommend a G 56 manual trans. Better shift pattern and it shifts a lot smoother. 05-07 truck is the best bet for one. Mod should do on one of those is the lift pump get one with some filters and protect that engine. I run FASS on all mine. And new trucks do cost way to much but I’m hoping warranty take care of any issues 😬 good luck on your truck search. Feel free to ask any questions. Thanks
@jwxfd
@jwxfd 5 жыл бұрын
I figure I can buy/build it for 1/3 of the cost of a new one....only things Id wouldnt be getting is a factory warranty and the modern amenities. Which to some is worth the ~$70k. Me? Not so much. As far as the trans is concerned, Im mostly selecting the 6-speed manual due to ratio stacks and reliability, considering the fact the 4-speed auto from that era is less than optimal for towing and far from reliable. If I can get my hands on a more modern auto, Id go that route, but would be quite pricey in the acquisition and build

I appreciate the video comparison. Cummins is great. I like that they don’t have all of the hidden electronics that tend to fail out of the competitor vehicles. Keep one thing in mind with comparisons, a 5500 will have a lot lower gear ratio than a 3500. The axle gearing will make a very significant difference in a comparison like this one. Not to say the 5.9 and 6.7 are comparable when speaking cubic inches. The delete is the win for what initially held the 6.7 back. They were choked down.

Great job Sam, as always another outstanding tutorial video for the working man. Cummins Guys will enjoy watching similarly prepared work trucks, perform competitive tasks. Haven't seen anyone else with the proper resources to do this. Thanks for this dose of reality, might be a red pill for the GM and Ford Guys. By the way, nice shout out to Alberalla at Wrenchworkz.

Those look like awesome jackets! Does being so much heavier really help in a speed test like that? I don't know a ton about hauling but do you think if it was a 5.9 5500 vs a 6.7 2500 the 5.9 would have won?
@VBELTandSON

JD Kirane naw the 6.7 has so much more in the tank. I’ve owned 4 5.9 common rail trucks and I was taken away at how much more throat the 6.7 has. But I do wish I had two truck identical to test with but only got what I got :/ and 2000lbs is a big weight when you hit the scales and it’s overloaded but towing i can tell a difference with that extra weight if it were on the trailer

I first diesel was a new 99 Dodge 5.9, 2500, 4x4, auto trans. Towed horse trailer thousands of miles along with 24' flatbed and 9000 lb tractor. Still running like a champ with 251k miles when I traded in 2005 for a 2005 Dodge 3500 dually, Vin C HO 5.9, 4:10, 4x4, auto trans. Upgraded to much larger living quarters horse trailer and pulled thousands of miles through the mtns., just traded it at 207k miles and running like a champ. This Spring I traded the 05 for a 2018 Ram 3500 dually limited, 4x4 with HO 6.7 and Aisin trans. I loved the 05 HO 5.9 for towing but it is no comparison to the 6.7 with Aisin trans set-up. The HO 6.7 with Aisin trans in a freaking beast. All three of these trucks stock, no mods or upgrades other than changing air filter to K&N in factory air intake. I was hesitant on going with the 6.7 because both 5.9's I had done so well but the 6.7 is a dream to drive and tow with, no regrets on that decision.

Enjoyed you’re video. Had a 93 5.9 with the getrag trans. for 20 years loved it. It’s still going strong with my sons buddy. New paint, springs and further engine mods. Took it all around the western US and many off road Baja trips. Bought a used 12, 6.7 with a 68rfe trans. Pretty cushy compared to the 93. Tons of power in stock mode but the fuel mileage can’t compare. Need more fuel capacity before Baja. Loaned my 12 to my son when I was out of town. His Ford gasser was T boned by a DUI and totaled. When I got home we flew to Salt Lake where he bought a 13, 2500 6.7. He just went to Mammoth for a fishing tournament and dusted an Audi on the Sherwin Grade. Of course he had to call and tell me.

Nice overall comparison. I didn't catch the year of the 5.9? I'm also curious to know the difference in fuel consumption and overall price of each vehicle? How many miles were on each vehicle respectively? What are the gear ratios used as they apply to the perimeters of your comparison? Also could you share a little info on the braking equipment to make a load like that come to a safe stop? Getting 20K lbs. rolling is one thing , stopping it is another. I sure miss my 2002 5.9 4x4. It was stolen 6 mos. ago in San Diego, Ca. Several witnesses say that a drop bed tow truck took it. I can't prove that yet, but it makes sense. Even though it's insured, the insurance companies are as crooked as the thieves. It was even spotted on Craigslist but the police would do nothing for me. I'm holding out on the insurance in hope it is recovered. I put alot of heart and care into that truck. Beware tow truck companies, they are rampant with thieves. Thanks, Will Rath
