Of course it's hard to understand. Our culture, psychology, instincts, education etc. are all based on something else and 99,9% of humans feel totally different towards it, have deep sexual desires. Don't get me wrong, people should do as they please and if they don't want to have sex, nobody can say anything against that or God forbid force them to. But obviously it is an irritating, totally uncommon thing and clashes with a lot of what has been established as fact about the human psyche (urge to pass on life, erotic thinking and so on). But there's nothing wrong with that either. Nobody is normal in every way. You know what I mean?

Same. Not many of us out there, and it was darn confusing growing up with non-ace friends. "What do you think of that girl? Is she hot?", "I don't know, her skin is nice.", "No, like would you bang her?", "Why?". If people ask, I tend to say I'm straight just to keep things simple. I want to keep relationships professional, I've got no concealed agenda with other people, so why attract attention to myself? Not to say I'm ashamed of it, if I'm with a person I click with then I'll be open about it, but there's no need for work to know this. I'm not going to cause trouble, that's all they need to know.

My mom came out as asexual this year.... She is 72 y/o and has a deep platonic relationship with my father. They both have said that this makes so much sense, but there weren't labels in their generation. She was surprised and delighted to find out that she has representation amidst the LGBTQIA+ .... Which makes sense, because she has always been a supporter and positive parental role to LGBTQIA+ orphans. I'm proud of my mom, and my father's grace and understanding. He still believes that she was the right partner for him, and loves her dearly.

sexual education and understanding of human sexuality sucks to begin with, and when you add *being asexual and not even understanding what that is* on top of that it all ends up very frustrating for many people of varying ages It's likely that I won't ever truly understand myself sexually, which is terrifying since being asexual and learning about "normal" sexual attraction sent me into a prolonged crisis once I hit puberty literally BECAUSE I felt like I was "broken"

I haven’t told my family I am asexual the only people I have told are two of my closest friends but for me the hardest part of telling my family I am asexual is that I am scared of how they would react to it. To me being asexual is wanting to have a relationship with someone just not a relationship that’s focused on the heavy making out stuff. Hugs and handholding are fine but the heavy making out stuff makes me feel uncomfortable including when those scenes come on in movies. There’s just 1 of my best friends I’ve been wanting to tell them I am asexual but I am not quite sure how to tell them if you know what I mean. I guess I’m just scared of the worst happening.

It feels for me like this orientation is the 'dirty little secret' of the LGBTQ+ community. I miss cuddles and connection so much that sometimes it feels like an actual ache. I wish there was a dating site for people like us. something i hate about being asexual is when people just automatically assume i'm a sex hater or will never have it. asexuality is a huge spectrum with many other terms falling under it. being asexual means i have NO/LACK SEXUAL ATTRACTION. When i look at a person, i don't find them sexually appealing, but that doesn't mean i don't like sexual activity. sexual activity only comes into play depending on the person who's asexual. some asexuals love doing sexual activity and enjoy it, some don't find it appealing, and some just find it neutral !

Sweet Honesty hi! In the lgbtq+ community bisexual and pansexual are widely known to be interchangeable terms, chosen by the individual person for what suits them best. Bi people are attracted to all genders, regardless of if they are transgender or not, and can also be attracted to non binary people, and this is the same for pansexual people. The two terms are used as different ways of expressing this kind of sexuality, much like how ace and aro are two terms to express a lack of sexuality in different ways. While the distinction is something that often only bi/pan people can feel, the best way to describe it is: bi people’s attraction to someone changes depending on the gender, whereas pan people’s attraction to someone is the same regardless of gender. Though unless you yourself are bi or pan, then all you really know is that they largely mean the same thing, just respect what labels people choose to use.

Given that “sex sells” I would be interested in marketing studies with asexuals as the participants. I wonder how marketing tactics would differ for them respectively
@Selestrielle
@Selestrielle 4 жыл бұрын
I never really understood why people say "sex sells." It always felt like a catchphrase that doesn't really have any grounds in reality. Why would people purchase a product just because there's a sexy ad for it? That's absurd. But then again I'm asexual. Whoops.
@StrawberryNinjaNibbles
@StrawberryNinjaNibbles 4 жыл бұрын
Selestrielle I don’t think consumers go “oh this is a sexy ad so I will buy it” it’s more implicit/subconscious & subtle than that. Humans are notoriously bad at identifying the CAUSE of any particular feeling, with this in mind, if they see an ad or something & are attracted to the person in it, they may not be able to disentangle that from the association with the product. Thus the product is elevated or even desired because of their potential subconscious desire for the person in the ad. And something that is tied up with sexual attraction will likely stay in your mind longer... & that is ultimately what advertisers are after. They pay to take up room in part of your mind as frequently as possible, essentially. Also, sexual attraction is something most (although not all) people experience, so it makes sense to tap into feelings that will reach the widest audience possible. This is not just limited to advertisements. Look at bands for example. I know many people that follow a band (even buy their songs, merch, concert tickets etc) because they find one of the members hot. This is the same principle. “Sex sells” because it does not require logic or facts or even much effort to get people’s attention when using sex as the lure. It taps into one of the most base & innate feelings among most people & doesn’t even require the consumer to acknowledge it in order for it to be effective.
@FairbrookWingates

I would be interested in such marketing studies, too. Like Selestrielle wrote, "sex sells" just never made sense. Neither did the idea of sex clouding judgement. Like they also wrote, "then again, I'm asexual".

Not everyone is trapped by marketing like a zombie anyway. If i'm interested by a product, i look at reviews and comparisons between products of the same price range. But i see your point between ads and sex. The goal is to seduce you, not to tell you the truth. Sex reference is not needed for that, but it is sign that the product might not be great.

I’m asexual and a virgin at 25. And usually when thinking about sex, it’s a “id be doing it to make others happy, but not myself.” Response. And that’s the truth. I used to be self-conscious but now I don’t get teased or interrogated as much. But usually my only thought is that if I did have sex it would be just to say I’ve finally had it so people would finally shut up. To all the other Asexuals out there: not wanting to have sex with people is not a bad thing. I had a cousin who always made me feel like something was wrong and I should want to have sex with every attractive person lmao. Turns out she is just a hypersexual person, which is fine, but she would talk me into feeling like I was missing out on life. When really if you are doing sex for others and not yourself you are not missing out on anything. 😘 In the end, it’s really no ones buisness but your own and whoever you are debating on having sex with. If you explain and others judge you that’s on them.

Wow, I have to be completely honest with you. A couple of months ago, I was having a hard time coming up to terms with my sexuality. Whether I was straight, or lesbian, or bi. I realized I never really had any sexual or romantic attraction towards anyone in my entire life. It was hard at first, knowing my parents are Catholics, meaning they don't necessarily support the LGBTQ community, or someone that isn't heterosexual, and they expect me to get married at some point in my life just like the rest. And no, I'm technically not the only member of my family that's technically not straight, yet I felt so out of place when my cousins and siblings started dating and started getting married. I will have to eventually come out to my parents and tell them I'm asexual, and hopefully, they support me for liking being alone. I'm glad to be part of the ace community and I consider myself a heteroromantic asexual. I love you guys!!

I think your Catholic parents are more likely to accept you being Asexual than the other letters on the LGBTQ+ spectrum. There is some Biblical evidence that the Apostle Paul was asexual, and the Catholic Church in particular has a long history of staying single and celibate to be devoted to God. They may still mourn their dreams for you to get married and supply them with grandchildren, but in my experience, Christians find Asexuality easier to accept than Homosexuality, Queerness, etc. I hope you can come out someday, and that you find contentment in being who you are. 💜

I didn't figure out my sexuality until I was 26. I am repulse asexual. I always wondered why I wasn't attracted to anyone. I would usually pretend to be attracted to some of the boys at school to fit in with the other girls that were talking about how cute the boys were. All the girls that were my age in middle school and high school were so giddy about looking at a boy that they thought was cute or a boy would get giddy about a girl he thought was cute(or vise versa with same sex giddiness) and I just didn't understand. I always thought there was something wrong with me. I've never felt the want or need to be with someone. The thought of being deeply intimate with someone grosses me out to the point of gagging. A naked body is just gross to me. Even the thought of having a pap smear terrifies me. I get so scared that I have severe panic attacks. They said that since I haven't been with anyone sexually that I didn't need a pap smear (I was so relieved). Yes, I was molested ( I was 3 years old, I remember everything even how it felt) and that may play a major part in my sexuality. I didn't realize that what happened to me was molestation until I was 24. To the people who made me feel like I was less of a person and made me feel like who I am didn't matter: I don't need to grow up, as I've been told many times. You don't have to have sex to be an adult. You don't have to like the thought of sex to be an adult. And no, the right person is not going to come along and change what I am. And I don't need to have sex to make sure.

Can I introduce you the concept of queer-platonic relationships? It is an umbrella term for committed partnerships that fall outside of romantic/sexual attraction. One example would be lifetime roommates who combine finances, another would be best friends who choose to raise children together. There are many people, Asexual-Aromantic and otherwise, who have relationships they customize this way. The most important things are communication, consent, boundaries. That being said, staying alone isn't such a bad thing either. Society is built in favor of couples, and being chronically single does come with hurdles, but friendships and family are valid as hell and there are more and more ways people are learning to come together and support each other through life outside of traditional categories for relationships.

When I was eighteen and I came out to my parents, they didn’t take kindly to it and were convinced I was just afraid of sex, hadn’t found the right person yet, was gay, etc. They actually said they would prefer if I was gay because at least then I wouldn’t be alone. It stung then and it stings now. I don’t want to be alone. I want to marry for companionship.

@The Fool you've got it wrong... There is homosexuality within many species. I don't know how people can't understand that not everyone is gay, so we aren't going to go extinct, just like any other species. That's ridiculous to even think. Good for you popping out kids, and nice shaming of the infertile. Also feminism started because we were thought of as lesser, we literally were not aloud to vote. Along with so much more mistreatment.
@AsmrShhay

@The Fool what is it to you?? We don't need to make anymore people than what we are making and it hurts nobody. And you can't change it, if your gay your gay. You just have a hate problem. Sad.
@theviewer6889
@theviewer6889 5 жыл бұрын
@The Fool Question, which mental disorders are you talking about here? If it's things like depression, anxiety, etc these would be better explained by systemic homophobia causing these to develop. Also there is literally not one single disease that only effects gay people. Also also infertile people can't reproduce but I don't see you going after them. The main goal as a social species is for the genes of the social species to live on so a gay doctor would be doing far more than a straight factory worker in that regard. Lesbianism didn't cause feminism, what caused feminism was things like the lack of a right to vote, unequal pay and systemic sexism. If lesbians didn't exist at all then feminism would still be a thing.

@The Fool and here we see a wild homophobe in their natural habitat, the KZbin comments of a video that they knew they could start a fight in. Watch as it attempts to win it’s arguments with it’s incomplete and incorrect facts and opinions, even though none of what they say will effect any gay person. Truly fascinating how the creature cries out for attention to it’s misconstrued dilemma, where it perceives there to be a problem where there is none. It will continue to bleat about a problem that affects no one but gay people themselves for many days to come, ferociously defending it’s homophobic territory against any reasonable education and unique life experiences that crosses it’s path. Majestic.

I can’t relate to the adjectives «hot» «sexy» etc, I can’t see anyone as that. I don’t want to have sex with anyone, I don’t feel the desire to. I could never relate to the thought of «I want a boyfriend to have sex» and «I can’t wait to have sex» I was like: «I just want someone to be with, I don’t care about sex» They were scepticl when I said that. I tell my family that I don't want to get married and have kids. Sometimes they laugh and think I am young and act childish (I am 22 years old) but when I get serious and tell them I don't want to get married because I don't want to have kids (I can't tell them I don't want to have sex or I am asexual, I feel shy telling them) they start shouting on me and say I watch TV alot and I am mad . Even my friends they say to me I am abnormal. I mean I don't hate relationships , It's just like I don't want to have sex. I don't know why sex is that important. If someone is not comfortable with it why ppl call that person abnormal. It becomes more difficult situation to handle when you are an indian. I want to achieve my dream and working really hard . Every single person I meet doesn't like it in a relationship They'll say they're okay with it at first, but then realize they actually do wanna have sex. Or like they said in the video, some people think they can change you? I refuse to date any sexual person, so I'm only interested in other asexuals U_U But yeah, why DO people care SO much about sex? Cuz they can love someone without knowing they're ace and then once they say, "I don't wanna have sex", they don't like the person anymore It seems so fake? Like they are only in it for sex Sex is just an activity. It's like saying, "I don't wanna hike, I don't like to". Then getting upset and leaving a person over it. Idk, I just think it's dumb (I like hiking btw)

Not a day goes by that I don’t wish Asexuality had been talked about when I was a teen. I’m in a 20 year marriage and FINALLY figured out that I’m probably Asexual. I spent most of my life wondering what was wrong with me and trying to “psych myself up” for sex with my husband. It has been very difficult for both of us, and I know it’s definitely not safe to tell my family. My husband and I love each other and don’t want to divorce over this, but there isn’t a solution that makes both of us happy. I am making SURE to talk to my kids about the option of Asexuality.

Most asexuals are soul searchers and spiritual in nature. They are old souls trying to find their inner self which is why inherently they aren't so much attached to worldly things. It's a great gift to be not given sexuality cuz it acts as a huge wall between ones body and the soul, the realization of which takes a million lifetimes they say

lucky7 okay I have no idea what you’re saying. But I do want to clarify a few things asexuality is no different than any other orientation. You seem to have the idea that being asexual somehow puts you above others and makes you wiser, and that’s just factually wrong. Also asexuality is no means a gift, it’s no more of a gift than being bisexual or homosexual is a gift. And being asexual doesn’t mean that are lives are freer than other, we still have the same amount of issues but the issues are just different.

Nothing unique to humans or mammals in general. I respect you're asexual and I don't discount it one bit. That being said, I really get the impression you're not looking at things objectively and are possibly discounting my sexual desires and the importance of them.
