As a former HS English teacher, I find it's taken me at least 4 years to undo the "subliminal messaging" in my mind about what school has to look like or not look like. It's a double edge sword having such a background...and your channel helps me a lot when it comes to the feelings of guilt and condemnation that has haunted me throughout my homeschooling journey...I think because I was so overworked and stressed out as a full time English teacher, I sometimes was worried when the kids and I had down time or spent "too much time" on one subject...but now I'm realizing that my kids thrive under an environment rich in encouragement, forgiveness, and simplicity.

I’m struggling with teaching my kids at all. I have trouble with routine myself and I’m jumping around a lot in my teaching, this makes me feel uncertain that my kids are properly learning let alone mastering anything at all. The guilt and worry is a lot but also worry from my husband who understandably has his concerns about my choice and my confidence is quite low I feel I am faking it in hopes to make it. This video was helpful however and I hope I’m on the right track.
@TheEclecticHomeschooler3 жыл бұрын
Totally get that, mama! It's definitely very helpful to have a good routine in place, just not a strict schedule, you'll have to keep experimenting until you find what will work for your family. I've learned for me (as I also struggle with consistency) that I have to put in more of an effort to grow in the virtue of diligence in this area. If you want an idea of a daily routine to try, check out my video about how we time block our homeschool and see if maybe there's something in there that will help! ;) kzbin.info/www/bejne/p5Kyoquee9p4ZsU Also, I encourage you to check out the book, Homeschool Bravely: How to Squash Doubt, Trust God, and Teach Your Child with Confidence by Jamie Erickson amzn.to/3BdsQma. I have done all of these things. Especially comparing our homeschool and children to others as well as trying to recreate the public school at home which I did in the beginning. That was disastrous. Another mistake I made was panic curriculum switching. I had a math curriculum that was working well for my kids, but at the time didn't have the confidence to just keep using that so I switched it. That put us on a path to learning gaps and stagnation in math because we had to pretty much start over every time we switched. So now we use Teaching Textbooks and I'm not switching again. The boys will take it all the way through pre-calculus if they make it that far.

I love your videos as a mom of five seriously exploring the homeschooling option. You’re giving me hope. One thing I haven’t figured out.. how do you present the idea of home schooling to children who have already been in the school system? My oldest is going into 4th grade, I have a 3rd, 2nd and kindergartner… how do I get them excited about doing this? I fear they are all (or most) going to hate the idea of not going to school with their friends.

I love how you talked on how kids learn being important in deciding how the school day might look. My youngest has high energy and has a very difficult time sitting for long periods of time. Super important to get many breaks in for her. I may need to give oral quizzes to my son so I can better explain what the questions are asking. He feels they are making it too complicated in some subjects. I do agree! Maybe I can break it down a bit for him. Also he may do better listening to the reading material over reading it within himself. He could either read it out loud or listen to me read it at times to see if it helps him understand better and hopefully he can better answer the questions. We will just have to see what works best for him.

In my state, they don't accept anything less than state standards for each grade level, for all students, public, private, and at home.
@TheEclecticHomeschooler9 ай бұрын
Actually, unschooling is legal in all 50 states, which would not necessarily be the same as “state standards” for public school. Some states have more regulations than others as far as what has to be submitted, etc. but there are many ways to be able to make your homeschool the way you want it to be. One option would be enrolling under an umbrella school that allows you the freedom to homeschool (or even unschool) the way you feel best. Bridge Academy is one such option. I always encourage people to make sure they comply with state laws, but often times we don’t realize how flexible they can be. HSLDA is a great resource as well.

I’ve made all of them! I wanted to add that even when you homeschool multiple children, they might not all do well with the same type of program or format. My 9y old has been so upset about school for years and we FINALLY found different curriculums that help him like it more and play on his learning strengths (I.e. he likes math u see better that the textbooks we had been using or the non textbook things we tried). My 6y old loves math but doesn’t like math u see. She feels it’s distracting and she rather do worksheets and textbook stuff (I have read and heard so many times to ditch worksheets and I felt I needed to). Homeschool is best done when you and your child are happy learning. I learned after so long to talk to them and ask them if they like how we’re doing things. I even ask a few weeks or a month or two into the curriculum if they still like it. We make it work for us which is what homeschooling is meant to be. ❤️❤️❤️

I get from the speech therapist and the pediatrician stuff like "but how are you going to do this with 5 kids?" and "but what if public school is what's best for them?" .... stuff like this that just makes me feel like total crap about what I'm trying to do here. Hi Samantha! I do have this topic on my content list but it probably won’t be out for a little while. You definitely have to develop a thick skin yourself to not take to heart what naysayers tell you. One way to do that is to really be set in your mind and heart about your why for homeschooling. If you are confident in your decision to do it, then it really doesn’t matter what others think. In reality, you don’t owe anyone an explanation. You can just say, “Thanks for your concern.” And leave it at that, or add, “This is our family and we are doing what we believe is best for our kids.” People are often abrasive towards things they are uneducated about and don’t understand. If you can research things like statistics about how well homeschooled kids do in college and life compared to public schooled kids, (hint, they do better) your confidence will increase regardless of what others say. Here’s a great article to help you start your research. www.nheri.org/research-facts-on-homeschooling/

Don't put to much pressure on yourself! He's not behind! If he hasn't retained it, that just means he probably wasn't ready for it yet. All kids develop on different timelines and the traditional school model fails those kids who are on a different schedule than the herd. Rest assured that he will learn all that he needs to know when he's developmentally ready for it! And when he is ready, it'll all fall into place! You've got this, mama!

If she’s just in Kindergarten, it sounds like maybe she’s just not ready yet. Try not to push too much before she’s ready. If you are both getting frustrated or upset, the best thing to do is step back and pause for a while. Try again when she’s ready. In the mean time, read books together, find fun ways to learn about the letters/sounds (go on a sound hunt, play alphabet games, search for letters in books, make letter crafts, etc) Enjoy your time together!

Even in the school system, they never get through the whole curriculum. It’s generally considered that you need to get through at least 80-85% of a curriculum. And then the first 2-3 weeks or more of the next year is generally review from the previous year as well, so you will be reviewing concepts and have time to address if there was a skill that was missed previously.

A good rule of thumb is to focus on the old adage of the 3 "R's" (reading, 'riting, and 'rithmetic) every day and then rotate through other subjects in some kind of loop schedule. Or maybe look into a unit study approach and see if that would be a good fit... Gather Round has some great options!
