The shape of Croatia has historical reasons. Most of the Dalmatian coast belonged to the Habsburg Empire, the Republic of Venice and the Republic of Ragusa until the Napoleonic Wars while Bosnia and Herzegovina belonged to the Ottoman Empire. The small gap at Neum was Part of the Ottoman Empire which diveded Venice from Ragusa.
@AelwynMr
@AelwynMr 6 жыл бұрын
Correct. I will add that ceding it to the Ottomans was agreed between Venice and Ragusa in a treaty (17th Century I think), as the two countries didn't want to share borders. That along with a second strip at Sutorina, which I believe is now in Montenegro (along with the whole bay of Kotor).

Yayyy! i loved to see my country featured in your channel! Chile (/chi-le/, you were right about the pronunciation) is such a diverse country and I love being Chilean! That is right, you can be born in the Atacama desert (North) and live in Tierra del Fuego (South). When people ask me about what the weather is like in Chile... I always find it hard to address, you must understand... xd FUN FACT ABOUT CHILE: We have territory in 3 different continents: South America (main land), Antarctica (a region in the South Pole) and Australia (the continent, not the country) also called Oceania where are some islands such as Easter Island. Tricontinentality. Your vids are great, keep it up! :D

I knew you'd pick Croatia first , but I have to say Croatia is very old and BiH was part of Croatia and Serbia until the Ottomans came (Croatia was at that time part of the Habsburg empire) and Croatia became a buffer zone toward central Europe. they made a "dent" in the territory. Croatia did not steal anything , the strip of land by the sea was given to BiH so that it can also have access to the Adriatic sea. Our territory is already very "lessened" , we have experienced occupation numerous times , we are very naive and that cost us. We just want do be left alone to live and work in peace in our country and with the countries that surround us. :D One more thing is that everybody talks about that we were part of Yugoslavia and we were , but Yugoslavia was a mix of peoples and everybody knew very well who was of which nationality and what were the borders of the republics during it's existance. Yugoslavia is a very small fragment of our history.

Bricks for Maxx good point !! that land is called "tierra del fuego" (fire land in english) and is split between the two. we have a peace treaty that says that chile does not have access to the atlantic and argentina does not to the pacific. in 1978 we almost have a war for that area. salutes !!

@blackwood5851
@blackwood5851 6 жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure he didn't mean steal in the sense of theft, but in the sense that normally if a country is near the coast, it mostly has the coast as border (like Montenegro right below). In this case you can say Croatia "stole" what would logically be Bosnia and Herzegovina's coast. That's why it has such a weird shape. It doesn't literally mean Croatia stole the land.

the reason for chile's shape is really cool, first at the start of the 19 century it was just the central part but we had a war with bolivia and peru gaining all of the north, BUUUT while the war was happening argentina had a problem with chile, the south part was from neither and they aproach to get the deal done. in the end the border of chile and argentina is marked by the tallest points on the andes. 😃

The double landlocked countries are Liechtenstein and Uzbekistan. The Caspian Sea doesn't count as sea access to the countries around Uzbekistan bc it has no connection to the ocean, and is 38 metres below sea level. I find it really weird that a sea is below sea level, but technically is a salty lake and not a sea, even though it is referred to as one. And also, bc the caspian sea is landlocked, the countries around it are the only landlocked countries in the world that have a coastline.

Dalmatian Coast, Croatia. Long story short (don't take my words as absolute truth, I'm being as concise as can be so most actual facts might not be like that): It belonged to the republic of Venice, then Napoleon came in, conquered Venice. Napoleon lost, treaties, all of Venice's territories were given to the Austro-Hungarian empire. Italian "Risorgimento", Italian unification wars, Kingdom of Sardinia conquers all of Italy, agrees to attack Austria alongside Prussia, gets Veneto. Trentino-Alto Adige, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Istria, and Dalmatia are left to Austria. First world war, Italian loss at Caporetto, then Italian victory at the Piave river, battle of Vittorio Veneto, Austria surrenders, Italy gets Trentino-Alto Adige and Friuli-Venezia Giulia. Poet Gabriele d'Annunzio leads a revolt to get Istria and Dalmatia, after some more treaties Italy gets Istria up to the city of Fiume (Rijeka). Dalmatia goes to Yugoslavia. World War 2 kicks in, Italy joins Germany, Mussolini gets kicked out and Italy first switches out, then joins US, UK, and France. Germany occupies most of Italy, partigiani, reconquering of Italy, end of the war in Europe. Yugoslavia pulls off an ethnic cleansing and banishing of Italian citizens in Istria, the US and other winning countries be like "yeah, sorry Italy, we need a friend against dem Commies" and ignores the genocide, Yugoslavia gets Istria. Cold war, end of USSR, end of Yugoslavia, Croatia gets most of Istria and Dalmatia, leaving a bit of coast to Slovenia and Bosnia-Erzegovina so they have access to the Mediterranean. Da END

If Chile surprises you for the great variety of climate in the same country, then you should take a glance to Italy: the climate spans from freezing alpine to quasi-desert arid weather, with huge temperature excursions from north to south, especially in the autumn and spring seasons.

Interstate relations between the Republic of Chile and the Plurinational State of Bolivia have been strained ever since independence in the early 19th century because of the Atacama border dispute. Relations soured even more after Bolivia lost its coast to Chile during the War of the Pacific and became a landlocked country (Bolivia still claims a corridor to the Pacific Ocean). Bolivia-Peru relations refers to the current and historical relationship between Bolivia and Peru. The two countries fought the War of the Pacific and were united as the Peru-Bolivian Confederation from 1836 to 1839. and also you spelt potato wrong in your name you should do your research lol because i just did

Elijah Pisani I didn't say Chile didn't landlocked Bolivia, I only said that before the war, the Northern City of *Arica* belonged to Peru, not Bolivia. You should actually read the question you've been asked before answering it. Also, I know I spelled it as P-O-T-A-T-O-E, but it was at purpose, because *it is a old, legitimate alternative spelling of potato*, and I used it ironically, I know. Here, check the link and if you don't really trust the source, again, *do some research* blog.oxforddictionaries.com/2012/01/spelling-can-be-a-hot-potatoe/

it was won in a war, (chile alone against peru and bolivia combined) and now there are chileans living there. to give them back is like saying to the US: give back texas to mexico. bolivia has free access tax free to ocean. they use the ocean-thing just to divert attention of internal corruption and poverty.

The two doubly landlocked countries you are talking about are Uzbekistan and Liechtenstein. Uzbekistan is surrounded by Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Afghanistan, and Kyrgyzstan. Liechtenstein is surrounded by Switzerland and Austria.

USSR did mess up the borders of each Soviet republic. Look at Armenia and Azerbaijan. It's their fault on why the two countries are fighting for land because both claim it AND both have territories in each others lands. Oh and Azerbaijan also has land between Armenia. What the hell was Stalin thinking?

Square U.S. State borders are really only common in the western part of the country. Take a look at West Virginia and Kentucky and you will find some very unstraight borders. Lol
