5 Minute Overclock: Ryzen 9 7900X3D to 5789 MHz

In this video, we're overclocking the Ryzen 9 7900X3D CPU up to 5789 MHz in 5 minutes or less using the GIGABYTE B650I Aorus Ultra motherboard and EK-Quantum custom loop water cooling.
I'll speedrun you through the BIOS settings and provide some notes and tips along the way. Please note that this is for entertainment purposes only and not the whole picture. There is a bug or its by design on the 7950XD and probably the 7900X3D as well, but enabling CPU Boost Clock forces all processes to the V-Cache CCD instead of the frequency one. Degrading cinebench scores etc.

I am using 7950X3D+B650E Aorus Master, I learned a lot after watching your video, now I have some questions to ask you (I am not a native English speaker, please forgive me): I have been using eclk105 with EXPO and 2200fclk+1.2vSoc, I gave the good cores +15, slightly worse cores +22 and used them normally. Because I have more time recently, I want to further optimize my co, so I used corecycler set to: y-Cruncher mode +22-ZN4 ~ Kizuna+BKT, BBP, SFT test, and successfully reduced a lot of co, but now it becomes unstable, it will randomly black screen restart or blue screen, I tried all cores +5-+10co after it is still unstable, finally I tried to turn off global c-state, then everything became normal, so can I turn it off? I noticed that the standby power consumption became a little higher, but I don’t care about the electricity bill lol, just want to confirm the safety

Yes, I think so. The X3D CPUs are mainly limited by voltage, not power consumption. So a decent AIO can squeeze all the performance out of an X3D.

Hey scatterbencher! Do your 7000x3d lag when opening certain programs like HWInfo64 or AIDA64 or even booting up? Mine lags so much and it takes longer to open these programs than my 8 year old desktop. I am so disappointed and sad with AMD tbh, it has been nothing but trouble for me, I am so close to giving up. The asus x670e extreme screws up all the time, fails to post often, the leds with armoury crate just DONT work.

No ECLK overclocking because this motherboard doesn't have external clock generators. Also, ECLK for dual-CCD X3D chips is pretty complicated as I've tried to demonstrate in OC Strategy #3 of SkatterBencher #56 kzbin.info/www/bejne/b3Paf6dshalgZpI As for the ideal method for finding the right Curve Optimizer settings: I use a combination of CoreCycler and SuperPI to find stable settings, then make sure to run through all my benchmarks and stability tests. I couldn't help but notice that the memory you have is not EXPO memory but is XMP memory according to the link you provided to Amazon. Is the XMP memory still ok to use with an AMD motherboard for OC?

XMP kits should work just fine on AMD motherboards. However, they might not be called XMP so not to conflict with AMD's EXPO branding. So they might be called DOCP like on ASUS boards.

@@SkatterBencher Right, was asking cause I wanted faster RAM and EXPO technically only goes up to 6000 MT's whereas XMP RAM goes up to like 7400 MT's or higher. I'm using an MSI B650 Edge Wi-Fi Board. I initially bought G.Skill Ripjaws that could do 6800 MT's but found out it was XMP so I returned it to Amazon for G.Skill Trident 6000 MT's instead that could do the EXPO. I've heard that if you try to OC XMP RAM on an AMD board it could be unstable, is that true or is that only if you are attempting to OC it manually? I haven't built my new build yet, I've got the parts and am still within my return window but need clarification if I could OC XMP RAM on an AMD board using the auto function like you did.

Hey scatterbencher, is there a way to set the CPU to max frequency all the time. Mine alternates a LOT, and even dips down below 3 Ghz for no reason during heavy gaming loads.

Not with Ryzen. Their frequency boost technology (Precision Boost) is designed to always find the maximum stable frequency at any given moment. Depending on the workload, that can fluctuate obviously. That's why you see changing frequency all the time. You can disable Precision Boost which will revert the CPU to its base frequency. That will be more like a fixed frequency, but obviously not close to the maximum frequency.

I was rewatching your 7950x3d video and I was curious about what you said about the 2 ccds sharing the same voltage rail so they cannot both go at their maximum frequencies. Why is this since they can both operate at the same time and one has higher frequency than the other?

Any chance you’d be willing to make one of these videos for the B650EF motherboard? There are differences between that and the board you use, the B650EF does offer overclocking but there are some options and feature missing. Btw I use the ryzen 7900x not the 3d chip

carefully with bios update, use stock bios, after bios update my mems just can go to 5400mh, before bios update i was able to send a viper 5600mh ecc to 6800 easy, now, boots fail after rise it even to the stock value of 5600mh!

Setting boost override to +150 on my 7800x3d actually seems to make performance worse. On auto I get 18000+ R23 score but with +150 I'm only getting 17300, 17500ish. Why is that?

It could be due to "clock stretching" where the effective CPU clock frequency is lower than the set CPU frequency due to instability. You can try setting +25 MHz first, check the performance, then gradually go up

@@SkatterBencher hmm that makes sense. Thanks for the reply. So I've just decided to leave it on auto. Changing it doesn't really seem to add any performance. I've also overclocked my Ram. I think how I have it set up is as good as it's going to get compared to stock. PBO plus CO -30 except one core is at -22. Ram at 6400 cl28-37-37-30. In Aida 64 I get around 69150 reads and 62-64ns latency.

I don't have enough time to cover all CPUs with all MB vendors, so I tend to stick to 1 CPU and 1 MB vendor. I also try to mix it up, so sometimes using ASUS, sometimes MSI, sometimes GIGABYTE, etc.

@@SkatterBencher I dont think so. msi released a new bios and Asus made a statement. they said they implemented thermal monitoring mechanisms, removed possible Vcore control and that they were working with amd on new rules for expo and soc voltage. Sounds like they know. I guess they'll find a way to prevent this in the future, but I'm concerned it will end up at the expense of performance. annoying, I was in the process of putting everything together. Maybe it would be better to send back and order a 13900k.

​@@SkatterBencher No, Pieter. The new BIOS releases are speculative mitigations. I don't think that there is yet a confirmed correlation between those spectacular "bubble" failures and intentional user overclocking/volting.
