On my E34, it was my oil pump housing gasket. Thought it was my oil pan, and a experienced machinist advised me not to mess with the oil pan gasket because if I did, I'd hate myself for two reasons. 1. Oil pan gaskets are well made and rarely leak 2. The labor involved is unbelievable. Glad I listened.....turned out to be the oil pump housing gasket. $2 part. The old one was brittle and flat. These are round flexible rubber gaskets. Now my E39 has developed a nasty oil leak so I'll replaced the valve cover gasket & oil housing gasket first and go from there since she has 130K miles on her.

my mechanic keeps coming up with all these wild ideas of how we can fix the leaks, like pulling the transmission, pulling the engine. completely rebuilding the car for like $13,000. and I am like "I just top it off with a quart every month and its fine"

I would also add vanos oil line as a possible leak reason.

Yes it can, not as common but still something that can leak. I recommend replacing this with the oil filter housing gasket

Just changed my front crank seal, oil housing gasket, and dip stick "O" ring, and the oil sending unit gasket located on the bottom of the oil pan. All were leaking. Remaining leak is behind engine so next step is to power wash that area and see if it's the rear valve cover gasket or the dreaded rear engine seal.

I got a weird issue on my e46 330i (2003). No smell of burning oil, but the oil change light comes on and off usually when just starting my car and rarely when i park. Its usually yellow light but sometimes goes to red.

Hello guys I have an E46 2001 318Ci 1.9L 118bhp and I changed the water pump but one of the bottles doesn’t thread in. It has 4 bottles just one of the small bottles doesn’t thread in. I’ve done over 500 miles on it no leak. Do you guys think it’ll be fine? I revved it up to 6,000 rpm no leak still

Your power steering reservoir gasket is leaking. Granted it is not oil, but nonetheless a cheap and easy o- ring to replace :-)

Yes it is leaking bad. I bought a new reservoir last year. I keep forgetting to put it in.

i checked the oil on my 06 330i ZHP and it was dry, i poured in the correct amount with no overflow. Is there something i should replace/ worry abt?

you were not clear on the dipstick ring, is it on the actual stick or is it on the oil pan, you did not say.

OFHG leaks because the engines overheat and the bolts pull the threads out of the block. If you are changing your OFHG get a set of helicoils or time serts and replace the threads on your housing bolts. And don’t over torque.

I have a 02 bmw 325xi, I was on the highway and I was driving fine until I had lose power immediately and I couldn’t accelerate so I pulled over to the side and I see smoking coming from left side of engine. I get it home and check under the hood and check the oil level and there was literally no oil in my car, what should I look at first

I have a 2003 bmw 325i and it has a oil leak and I can’t tell where it’s coming from. But it pools up on the ground around the left side of the engine on the passenger side and you can smell it burning when you drive for a long time. Any ideas ?

@@tammystewart10 you can really do the valve cover gasket yourself, it's the easiest of the fixes, far easier than the oil filter housing gasket. I've yet to do the latter, at least, but there's a lot more stuff to disassemble first

@@tammystewart10 any time 😊 I did the valve cover gasket a year or so back. The ignition cables and a few other bits and bobs have to be removed, but it's really an easy enough fix (a fix if yours is leaking, that is). Essentially the valve cover gasket is like the lid of a pot. It's just the cover, so there's no real mistake that could cause engine damage or what not. You get to see into the head of the engine too, the camshafts and all. It's a pretty cool thing to try, if you are so inclined
