Congrats on getting into the Chill community. The story about Papa Danke was my favorite, even if it left my mouth dry by the end. There needs to be more 'scary events/true crime events in history' story compilations out there. "Those who don't learn from history are doomed to repeat it." exists as a saying for a reason.

The "shock and awe" of Vlad the Impaler could have saved the Catholic-Christian nations of Central Europe like Hungary and Bulgaria. It's debatable. Though Vlad was not a criminal, I don't know if I can elevate him to hero status. To me, Vlad the Impaler is the quintessential example of history as neither totally black nor totally white. One thing to remember: the Turks were also, at times, extremely cruel too. They were not boy scouts.

A lot of people in the comments are defending Vlad, refusing to see the monster that he truly was. He didn't just impale Ottoman soldiers (Which is one of the worst ways to die) but also Turkish civilians as well as his own Wallachian civilians, Wallachian nobles while also spearheading the genocide of ethnic groups such as the Gypsies/Romani as well as Jews. He was a monster, plain as daylight. Don't let your biases get in the way of your humanity.

So, Gilles De Rais may have been innocent. Many historians believe that, due to the over the top nature of his supposed crimes, and that he was wasting his family's money, he was basically "taken care of" with false accusations of the most heinous kind. Obviously with this having happened so long ago it's impossible to really know. Either way, he probably wasn't a very good man.

@aricm59733 жыл бұрын
Ooof. Disgusting to know things like these happen
@sars9103 жыл бұрын
That was Christian propaganda made to look Vlad's actions more "justifiable" to a horrified Christian world. Vlad was treated remarkably well by the Ottomans, even though he was a hostage. Another piece of propaganda was the rumor that Vlad's brother Radu and the Ottoman emperor's son were in a homosexual relationship. This was most likely untrue and was used to make Vlad seem like the better choice for Wallachian nobles since Radu had converted to Islam. So Radu was smeared as a homosexual to make Vlad more palatable to the nobles (This was necessary because Vlad prior had impaled several Wallachian nobles and their families early in his reign).
@ilovebirbstruecrime40963 жыл бұрын
@@sars910 Vlad even reportedly executed a woman because her husband's "robe" was too short. The husband pleaded that his wife was sick and couldn't sew but Vlad insisted that she wasn't worthy of life. There's a detailed documentary by a Romanian citizen who went in depth. Vlad killed his people mercilessly, especially the destitute ones. He burned them alive. He is no hero. As for his stay with the Turks, just like you mentioned, it is reported that he, alongside his brother, received the same treatment as the sultan's children. Same training and education, which was the best in the empire. Sure, it must've been haunting knowing you were a "hostage" but he wasn't tortured nor abused. He was a disturbed individual and his poor people payed for it. It was utterly confusing hearing about how heroic he was. I even went to check that documentary again to see if it was false and proofread the sources. Hard to get the true version of events with everyone turning narratives around everything.
@sars9103 жыл бұрын
@@ilovebirbstruecrime4096 Romanian nationalists, and some Christian fundamentalists like to prop up Vlad as a hero, not because of Vlad's own character, but in order to oppose Muslims (Who they conflate with the Turks). In order to do this, they retcon Vlad into a "tough but fair" ruler (Instead of the brutal monster that he was). This makes it easier to portray him as a hero while the Turks are painted as absolute villains and atrocities are sometimes fabricated (I'm not saying Turks were angels or that no atrocities were ever committed but they take it extreme levels). This is where the "Vlad was molested by the Ottoman sultan as a child" myth was fabricated, even though there is no evidence to support it. People need to be honest about history and historical events, instead of twisting it to fit their own narratives.
