When I started my first relationship late (I was 23 he was 39) I had already spent years researching what men really want. Respect. They even choose respect over love. I had the right mind set, but the wrong man. Despite him being 15 years older, he was still a kid inside, living alone all his life. He wanted to marry me as fast as possible. But I worried about his obvious mental health issues. I told him, I would need more than a few months to get to know him. And that he should get professional help before we could marry. He dismised all this and so I broke up.

"Toxic" key word for what happens and I have been there too many times. Trying really hard to absorb all of your advice and information in all your videos. I'm going back into an old relationship with someone I love with all my heart and cannot get over, we still love each other deeply, just didn't get along. After watching all your videos I am understanding why...I pray that with all this new knowledge and by the grace of God it works this time... My life feels empty without him ...Much ♥ to you and your wife

Thanks Matt!! I'm going to immediately establish the "do over" in my current relationship...as we all say things without thinking!! I'm 71 and have learned so much from your videos. Women who feel that you're talking to "women only" need to suggest to their man that they too watch and simply reverse the information to themselves. Much of this we've learned along the way but are always open to being educated. By the way, the love of my life is 15 years younger than me (and no, I'm not rich!). With age comes wisdom (which Matt found through his interviews) so listen up youngsters!!

My parents use to sit down to talk about everything and anything that was going on at home with us the kids, house, there business, family, Marriage And anything else. The one thing I can say is that they never used any offensive words or never yelled and if they said anything that was miss understood they would ask what do you mean by that can you explain, but if they were upset about something they would wait until the emotions were under control before sitting down to talk. now I use this in my marriage thanks mom and dad

Mat, Just came across your videos last month and I love them! You certainly get much of you great advice across in short, impactful clips. I am 67, never married semi retired sales professional who supposedly is a successful communicator😂 Well, I am renewing an old college friendship with a very successful guy and we got caught up in a “miscommunication” that I made worse by “hinting” and not addressing the issue head on. I didn’t know how to turn it around and remembered this video and re-watched it. I wrote him a playful email asking for a “Do -Over.” I explained what it meant and then gave a short and sweet but direct explanation of why I got so emotional. I ended the email with “Can we have a Do-Over?” Within 10 minutes he responded with “You can have anything you want!!!” He called, I did not mention the topic (as promised) and we talked for 30 minutes. I’m in NJ, he’s in Paris. Thank you, Mat! You are a Godsend!

Great video Matt, thank you. I totally agree with respect. I always tell any guy I'm dating "It doesn't matter if you love me if you don't respect me". If a guy respects you, he will love you, trust you, understand you, tell you the truth, encourage you, advice you etc. 1- Fortunately I'm not guilty of name calling. Actually I've never been into a very serious, loud or violent argument. I'm too quiet sometimes for my boyfriend's liking. 2- I'm guilty of labeling. One day, my boyfriend said he was visiting but rather hung out with his friends and came very late so I refused to open the door; I didn't even react; I was busy singing and ignoring him until he left. That's the incident that actually made me set him straight. I told him I would take a lot of things but disrespect was not one of them. I would walk away without blinking. He just sat there and listened in shame. 3- I think mentioning the past once in a while is necessary to make one understand how far he's gone in not changing at all. I'm the quiet type so I don't usually complain. The day I do, I would bring past events because I had not mentioned them when they happened. 4- "Always" and "Never"? Not sure. Not the arguing type so I wouldn't use them that often. 5- It's common that when people get angry, they want to say hurtful things to each other. My boyfriend's father wasn't actually a good father; he abandoned his mother and this gave him mommy and daddy issues (an absent father that he 'hates' and a mother he adores and worships sometimes too much for my liking). This often scares me when I think about marrying him. Btw "do-overs" sound great.

I must say, it is refreshing to see so many women in the comments really trying to learn how to work on their relationship and how to communicate. I usually expect things that will need to be worked out early in relationships but in my experience the females expect me to do all the work. Not sure if it is my demographic culture or if I’m just attracted to the wrong types of women.

So, the "5 fair fighting rules" are: 1)No name calling (e.g. you're a jerk). 2)No labeling, i.e. putting a name call on a behavior or action (e.g. that was so selfish/rude etc). 3)No bringing up the past. We must stay focused on what we're discussing at that moment and not talk about similar mistakes/situations of the past. 4)Avoid the words "always" and/or "never". 5)No hitting below the belt (e.g. you're just like your dad). ➡To follow the 3rd and 4th rule, we can have a conversation about the past later, when we're sober or the next day. Ιn my opinion, this is an important and necessary conversation to prevent similar unpleasant situations in the future. *The "tool" that can help us avoid conflicts/fights is to ask for "do-overs". For example, if we're stressed out someday and start a conversation talking abruptly, we can pause for a few seconds, take a deep breath and ask to restart the conversation talking kindly, explaining our point of view and showing empathy and understanding to the other person. (We should always be kind and respectful to everyone, especially to the people we love and above all to our most beloved person in the world! This is implied for those who feel true love for someone! 🙂)*

Hi Mat, I found your video very helpful. You bring some very relevant behaviours to avoid in a fight. It happened to me a few times that I was in a fight and these behaviours were used against me, that made me feel weak and uncomfortable around the person for a long time. Luckily this person is not my significant other. And it makes me wonder, if there is a universal way to confront these behaviours when you notice them in the other person, while remaining respectful and not hurting their feelings?

I did the always n never a few days ago. Well bringing up the one time the one time you something right in a month doesnt excuse the laziness of the rest of the times you were needed. Then it makes a woman feel unheard and didn't care about doing it because it seems small to you but big to her.

I honestly thought about him bringing up the past about what happened in our lives and not about the pattern in the relationship

@@jennpipp26 now now now ... this is a bit harsh to say. To be precisely: Women might be hurt by the same things. *BUT* women tend to be be more vicious than men in general. They are faster at throwing verbal knives and posioned needles. Men can be unfair in an argument. But they hardly ever turn into hissy fures like women.

I completely disagree with avoiding mentioning the past. People in relationships need to be held accountable to maintain respect for each other.

Did YOU marry a prostitute or the MAN îs a pimp or a gigolo ?! People and people...Dont Take statistics FOR granted, a prostitute or a gigolo or gay male prostitutes overestimate median sexual relationships. From which results people arent statistics.Dont judge, inform.Find out but dont Tell with loud voice! YOU just made your life too complicated!

How does that work though.. suppose the other is just being downright condescending because they made a mistake and feel like they failed and try to get back their pride through being condescending towards you. They don't realise it, but you do. it happens often, this is a recognised dynamic between people. How will you tell them without calling it by its name?

Great tips. I would like to know if there is anything you can do when you have done most of these things in your relationship. I have been with my husband for 5 years and things are changing. I obviously know not to continue doing these things but is there anything to try and fix the mistakes already made?
