@@truantray everyone knows this is not an official test just a demonstration. The tests that Snell and other helmet testing foundations do back up the finding here. I can't speak to car helmets but motorcyclist magazine did testing on actual testing equipment and At that time they found that Snell offered no extra protection over DOT. This was vack on 2006 I think. They lost a ton of ad revenue from the test but it did spur SNELL to update and rethink their testing procedures and requirements.

This is a good read if anyone is so inclined. Keep in mind its an older article and the SNELL standard has been updated since then. Most likely due to this article. motorcycleinfo.calsci.com/MotorcyclistHelmets.html

Its waaaay more complicated. First, I read the article and it was not very well written. Second, I really like Snell BUT these guys are almost making the argument tjat a pricey helmet is always better and that a Snell helmet is always better- and I know those are neither necessarily true. The cool thing about snell is that they certify and they update standards. Third- read the Hurt report. DOT is way past due for update. Fourth- so long as the helmet meets DOT, the two best things you can choose for are full face cover and a really good fit- snug, not too tight, good contact all over, no hot spots. Serious. This is your life we're talking about

Except... A $40 Snell approved helmet meets all the same standards a $400 Snell approved helmet does. Aaannd there's been some re-thinking of having such a hard shell due to secondary musculoskeletal issues. Also, a poorly fitting helmet, regardless of certification or price, is bad. Don't do it. Short answer: Don't shop by price. Shop by certifications and fit.

Sam Johns an Arai and a Shoei are both rated identically. The former is about $150 and the latter generally starts at $400. The rest is fit, graphics, and venting. And with very few exceptions, the Snell certifications have remaine'd remarkably consistent. I'm wondering if ANY of the responses to my comment are even from folks who've ever even worn a helmet or done any sort of research on them at all.

Bart is an excellent addition to this channel as a host and a personality. The blank smile and cheerful wit is just like "f*ck you, this is science", and it's awesome. Great job man, I'll be tuning in for sure.

Kevlar, an opaque fibrous material, is the stuff in bulletproof vests. Bulletproof windows are usually made of Lexan. I'm guessing the visor isn't Kevlar.

Still recovering from a 35mph crash but my 100$ helmet definitely saved my face and head. Someone pulled in front of me then ran me over and I got burned a good little bit from the exhaust and my ankle had to be reconstructed, so I'm thinking a nice suit and boots would've protected me from that. My cowboy boots flew off somehow because they are fine, but you should test normal work boots vs racing boots and cheap gear vs more expensive gear. Don't ride unless you got money to splurge on gear. I got lucky and learned from a low speed crash that got me some pretty big scar sand. A couple months out of commission, but at high speed who's knows what could happen because of other people's driving.

Why not do a “how engines or turbos work” series. You can just go over different parts of performance.

Good vid. Title is pretty misleading, though. It's not about the money, it's about the certification. Show me a test between a $100 SA2015 helmet versus a $1000 SA2015 helmet. I think that would be a more relevant test.

Cool. Maybe you can do a follow-up and talk about what happens when a good helmet is dropped or involved in a crash. Do we replace them? Why? How can we know it is still "good enough" for use? Also... any differences between motorcycle helmets and auto helmets? Thanks for this!
