I think at a certain point in life we have to decide and realize who we are. I've been alone my entire life and at 28 I thought I could date and eventually find the right one. At 41 I've come to realize that was never meant for me and that I'm happiest being alone and not trying to take care of anther man's kids or stress over maintaining a someone else's happiness and enjoyment. You gotta get to a point where you know thyself and embrace the world as it is and not as you want to be.

There's a real stigma to being a man of a certain age and still trying to make your way. As a 51 year old, I had the pleasure of burning bright and then fading fast. This last reinvention has me in men's fashion, mostly retail with a little styling here and there, but my overall path is lost. I literally feel the song "Don't Give Up" by Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush. Now that's a reference for a certain age! There's a lot of silent struggle with Men of a certain age. Honestly, as soon as I figure it out, I'll be telling everyone. At the moment, it's one foot in front of the other.

I just turned 54 this past weekend. I pay attention to the 4 F's - Financial fitness, physical fitness, emotional fitness and spiritual fitness. You need to learn to balance all 4. As men, we give give give and often get nothing in return. So we have learned to become self-sufficient. Focus on the 4 F's.

I’m 49 , never had a girlfriend nor the prospect of one , I’m broke ( 32k a year ) bad credit, overweight etc…., I know all I need to do is increase my income and I’d be ok because I’d feel better mentally , I know I’m not attractive so being with a woman ( without paying for it ) ain’t gonna happen and I came to terms with that 20 years ago.

This happened to many men after 2008. Companies let go all their higher paid middle management males. I am 70 retired dentist. I had many patients this happened too. My advice. Persevere. Go into something that you can do into your 70’s. Home Depot guy. Ace hardware. Learn about stuff. Mr fix its are hard to find these days. Mail man. Work on thy self. Focus on the positive. That will get you a job. Delivery guy for UPS. Finance guy at a car dealership. Again, Can Do mentality.

Great advice. I met a guy a few years ago down my local DIY store. I was looking for some screws for outdoor decking. He worked there and was putting the screws on the shelf. He told me he used to work in an office but just liked DIY and decided to go and work in a place he liked. Loved the job. I also recently also took a job I can do until 70. Its decent hours, not too hard physically but good for my body and brain and self esteem.

Antonio, bottom line up front, this is probably the most motivating video you ever made. I am a former Marine that spent most of my military career and retired from the Army. T.M. is going through what so many of us went through. Although I had breaks in service and had a successful civilian job, I returned to the military because it wasn't what I was looking for. A few years ago when I retired from the military, I went through the identity crisis like many people. On one hand, cling to something that isn't there is foolish and delusional, but on the other hand, growing out my hair, stop shaving, and adopt a new identity is just as ridiculous. Why should I stopped being who I am all my life just because I took my uniform off? During that same time, our daughter was born, so I have a new role to play. At first I thought I was going to set even higher career goals. So my take on retirement is a little different. While I understand what you mean about people without goals just die, in Washington DC where I work, I saw many people with no life outside of their career, and they literally worked until they drop dead. It took me a while to see it, but my responsibilities as the head of my family (ok I know it sounds old fashioned but I don't care) are far greater than what I realized, and yes they are more than enough to keep me gainfully employed. I also stay busy with various social and veterans organizations, so I can hardly afford to waste time these days. Like other Gen Xers, I was completely ignorant of my own Gen X identity and how much I have in common with other Gen Xers. I discovered that many of us are going through the same mid life challenges: Caring for aging parent while caring for our own children, and try to figure out things on our own, often without mentors. By sharing experiences and listening to experiences of others, we gain strength as we realize we are not really alone in our struggles. One thing I do have to disagree with you is I think millennial fashion is NOT better than ours, LOL. Ok when you are 20 and skinny, sure a PeeWee Herman suit looks great. However, when you are in your 50s, with just a little bit of fat, with a low waist line and tight fitting trousers, we look like damn chickens with round bellies and skinny legs. I retired my skinny pants a few years ago. Anyway, great video and keep up with the good work.

I raised my son alone from age 4 and always prioritized him. You wouldn’t think so by how he acts toward me. He’s got a great job though so I’ll deal with the pain knowing I did something right. Also at 50 and life is a struggle. I’m not broke though. IT’s relationships. Hard to find a woman that is a good partner.

I appreciate this video. I'm 49 and at a real crossroads. Lockdowns in the UK completely changed my business, making me 100 per cent work-from-home. However, as a freelancer, I built my career going from company to company, making contacts and work-from-home has trashed much of my client base. I always struggled with social anxiety and having to go out to work really helped me fight it. I moved out of London in 2019 to look after my elderly parents (both poorly) expecting to be travelling back and forth to London. However, I've ended up living with my folks as a carer, with a diminishing amount of paid work. 70 per cent of UK freelancers are currently out of work and I no longer particularly like the business I'm in that much, since it's become terribly isolating. So I'm thinking hard about what to do in the future. Thanks for the food for thought! 🙂

T.M... I slightly passed your age, and I can tell there hasn't been BETTER times to overcome and find meaning / purpose again. Successful immigrant with grad studies in Eng only to find myself working in the produce dept of a grocery store for longer than I'd like, but shorter than I imagine ! Talking to customers, walking, lifting (I got in shape !!!!) ... I was the one responsible to BRING FOOD to THEIR TABLE on YEARLY FAMILY EVENTS such as Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter ! BEST job ever ! (and, YES!!, I used to be the produce dept front man starting at 6am at -20oC in winter times !!!) As For ANTONIO... 👏👏👏man, what SOLID advices !!

I feel for that guy as I to am over 50. Becoming a Vet vice serving was a real shock. I got a pension and a study grant which helps but it's not like being at work each day. But serving taught me a few things. Failure isn't an option. Keep going no matter how rough the road. Never give up. Never say die until you're dead. I've started the road to a new career, something I have not done since I was 18 years old. A new adventure! A new direction! One big problem I have is dealing with the other Gens. I'm Gen X and I cannot figure out how to communicate and interact with Millennials or Gen Z. I have no problems with Boomers. I fear having some "smart ass kid" being my boss and would probably turn down a job if that were the case. I have life experience, life skills and experienced horrible conditions they have never experienced. But I don't mind talking to the CEO, owner, shareholders or other Execs because they are probably in my age range. Direction, bearing and having a vision are absolutes. Great video Antonio and very much needed by us "old" guys. We do have purpose, we do have skills, we do have wisdom and experience, but most of all....we DO!

I am a fellow Gen X veteran, so I understand you completely. For me talking to other Xers help a lot. I retired from the Army 8 years ago, and I had worked with a few great millennials, but also some really terrible millennials, Xennials and baby boomers. The attitude of the terrible people is basically you are too old, too slow, and you want too much money. I was told my experience is basically worthless, because experience is nothing more than outdated knowledge! Well, when I was 35, they complaint that I didn't have enough experience. Now at 52, I have a family to feed so pardon me for wanting to get paid more than a 35 yo, LOL. I think the key is finding a place to work that fits you, and socialize with other Xers. We all went through the same challenges of the past, and most of us are dealing with the same present challenges. There is always strength in number.

Then we had to do some audits of manual pay cards and other paper documents for pension purposes. I sat there with a wide smile because I was one of the very few left that went through that system early in my career, so I knew how to read the documents. Same when there was a need to get data off some very old 3" diskettes. (I had an old tower at home with a working drive. It was the first computer I ever bought and it still works so I use it for offline.) Eyes went wide when I hauled that relic into the office , set it up and extracted the data. In my current computer courses I had no problem with the introduction because all the examples of historic hardware are sitting just behind my desk at home! My point is, people laugh at us old guys until they need us. I didn't get this old by being stupid.

My boss is 40 years old, knows way less than me but I don't come across with a chip on my shoulder. I enjoy the company of the young people I work with and treat them with respect. I am slightly amazed they actually like me even though I am old enough to be their father. I can do the whole talking to the CEO thing too - in fact I am being tasked with doing a really contentious meeting with a really obnoxious guy as my boss feels a bit overwhelmed. I am looking forward to it. The obnoxious guy doesn't know my background. I have had machine guns pointed at me, held business meetings in hell hole countries in earthquake fractured buildings with men who could not care less about a human life. I can handle it. So can you because you have life experience that others don't have.

Turning 50 next year -divorced for 15 years - my kids are both in college and working to save up money. The business that I've been in to varying levels of success for the past 20 years is crumbling due to so many changes in the past years of direct marketing. Took care of my mom for the last few years of her life until she passed a year ago. I'm no longer "responsible" for anyone other than myself. On the verge of losing my house and the only emotion that I've been able to feel for the past year and a half is desperation. Getting very close to just chucking everything.

I am too facing similar problems (although I'm 42) and the only piece of advice I can give you is to surrender your life to our Lord Jesus Christ. Ever since I did that (over 15 years ago) my life never really got any easier but what a joy it gives me to be able to look back and realize that God has gotten me through everything. Surrender your life to him, it'll be totally worth it!

If you do, things will work out far better than you could of ever imagined. Second: Look for ways to help the people around you. I feel this story. I was just made redundant at work literally this week i finished my last day. Luckily for me im big on networking through different gyms (I'm a gymnastics coach), ive managed to scrape up a bunch of offers within a few days amd another offer for work i used to do before i changed careers. Lots of people don't want to, but if you're not as lucky as myself to get many offers in the same career, it can be good to have a think about what you did previously before that carreer amd try get some work in that while you're trying to get back into what you really want to do. From my experience (also an Aussie), there are a ton of jobs available in Sydney. It's all about being open to do something you may not want to do to set yourself up, so you're able to do what you want to do. FYI there are a copious amount of jobs available in hospitality, and on the up side you sometimes get free coffee and food 👌🏼

Great video Antonio. I found myself broke at 50 and starting over after many years living like a king. I made many bad choices with bad habits then almost homeless. I just turned 60 and am in the best shape of my life physically, financially and spiritually. It took a lot of hard work, discipline and sacrifice but is worth it. Often 3 steps forward, 2 steps back. Many times 5 steps back. I'm not rich but if I continued down that path of self destruction, I would most likely be pushing up daisies. The 1st thing is I had to get a healthy diet which made me think better and I was then able to get my financial house in order. I now have inexhaustible gratitude. 😂

I'm happy for you, and honestly, I highly respect those like you who sacrifice and work hard to achieve such things. My physical fitness and spiritual life is good, but my financial wellbeing is terrible at the moment. I'm only 24, so I know I have time, but what are some disciplines and skills that I can develop to become financially well-off and how can I develop these disciplines and skills? I have educational qualifications, including a Master's degree, but those are becoming increasingly worthless. Because of my level of qualification, I generally find it extremely hard to put my ego aside to take a minimum-wage job or anything, though I am more willing to do so now. The only reason I haven't is because I was hit by a car three months ago and am currently recovering from the injuries caused by the hit.

I've just turned 38 this year and have been through hell myself. I am also still going through it. Battling cancer and a multitude of health problems that have changed my life. As stated, the best thing to do is to keep going. It is not as easy being a man as we are all told. It is also never too late to redefine who you are. Not to say change everything about yourself, but to better yourself to build confidence. I've found that after years of bad clothes and edgy graphic tees, that putting on a polo and a decent pair of jeans makes me feel much better. Taking care of myself. I am slowly beginning to work out. It is easy to lack motivation when you are surrounded by lazy people who do nothing but complain. To sink into depression and just grumble through the day. Pull yourself beyond that. Don't just be a man. Be the man. Which, in truth, is easier said than done. You just have to keep at it and not give up. We have one life to live. And it's never too late to start living to the fullest.

Dude, definitely respectful that you have the family you do but as for me, mentally, I could not handle it. One kid was enough for me and she is like having three kids and she’s already 21 years old .Coming from a family of five, it turned me off having a bigger family where I originated from.

3:30 Sometimes you need to crash and hit the floor exploding into a thousand pieces only to rebuild better. At 42 that just happened to me. I just lost a business of 3 years, had to hire a lawyer its still pending, meanwhile i cant get a job, I had SWAT BUST DOWN MY DOOR (I'm not kidding) for allegedly running on a moto MONTHS ago, my bike my property my phone all gone i was let go but the cops are trying to put the charges back. What a crush. So i said FU ill build another business and that's what I'm doing. I got in touch with my past crew dusted off my leads told everyone I'm back and i feel like this is better than ever! Crazy right? Its what you make of it.

I would say, "buy land", and engage in your community and neighbors. Forget about the Covid, two wars (possible world war 3), crappy politicians and economic disarray. Feeling like you are a part of a community brings you away from the abyss.

49 soon to be 50 female. Out of work 5 months due to car accident injuries ending in surgery. My jobs are both physical. It’s a game changer. So many unknowns and being alone and not set up for this age is daunting. Your talk and the comment section is supportive. Being alone and out of work is hard in the mind, atleast for me. Need to move fear away and come up with a new job and plan.

I just started a new career at 48. Getting into fintech when tech is shedding jobs left and right. Antonio is right about alternate learning opportunities. When my then employer offered paternity leave to our largely youthful workforce-the next new hires were all 40 plus. Use your age to your advantage. Colonel Harlan Sanders started his first KFC at 62.

Families should live on the same property imo, and help raising the kids. The current and past societal norm that exhausted parents is " what's normal" has to go. We have lost the "family/friend tribe"

I can barely handle myself and animals. I like my freedom, but sometimes I think it'd be nice to have a partner in crime. But I get tired of things easily and feel suffocated when people are being clingy or showering me with emotion and affection at the wrong time. And then I want to be alone, but they make it worse by trying to demand my attention. Yep, I think I am meant to be alone. :/
