5057 Orbit: How Does It Sound?

Hear the difference the 5057 Orbit makes on a mix: ITB vs. analog summing, Silk Red vs. Silk Blue, and pushing the levels into the output via the Trim control.
We highly recommend listening on high-quality headphones or studio monitors.
It's worth noting that to REALLY understand the benefits of analog summing, we encourage you to demo a 5057 Orbit in your own setup. The differences in workflow, gain staging, and balancing a final mix when you're summing through a mixer like the Orbit can make a huge difference to your mix's overall level, width, and tonality, and a single video could never do it justice - so call your local RND dealer and try one yourself!

I purchased my Orbit, I didn't realize there was a learning curve in setting it up with my Apollo x8 and running it through pro tools. Any advice?

@@mickeysol2107 Hi, I also purchased an Orbit recently, and well i didn t notice a clear improvement in sound, in depth, ...perhaps i m missing something ? I was hesitating buying a less expensive one, because the aim was to insert hardware before an after; but well i was wondering if like they say you can have "the sound" of console. Nothing special to my hears. Could tell me your feeling, if you use it and how ? Thx a lot.

I haven't been able to use it at all. I'm new to the analog world, I come from the digital world, using plugins. So i'm tryna to get some guidance in how to properly connect and route the analog gear. @@MELOPSMUSIC

People who don't hear the difference always talk about gain matching. It's really ignorant.
@theredfaceofficial
@theredfaceofficial Жыл бұрын
This is exactly my point in my comment. It’s always those ITB guys who don’t want to invest, they get sucked into level matching and null tests etc etc. The bottom line is, any audio going through Op Amps, Transformers, Tubes, etc, will get level bumps due to extra harmonics being added to the signal. If you take the level discrepancy out of the discussion, the box has a sound and it’s a very very nice sound indeed. Tonally it’s beautiful.

@@theredfaceofficial They are mistaken for the same volume when the peak levels match. That sounds downright dumb. They have no knowledge of dynamics

The tonal difference is massive, and the Orbit makes it ‘sound like a record’….end of. There’s glue, width and that beautiful transformer haze and sheen. I don’t see the obsession with level matching. If you can’t hear those transformers, I have nothing to say. Listen to those lower mids thicken up, it’s got nothing to do with levels. If analog adds volume, I would take it and utilize it into my overall gain structure, with less compression and limiting required. The orbit makes weak snares sound so much thicker, adds vibrancy to Instruments and vocals, and the bass end becomes more prominent with Blue silk. There’s a sense of more liveliness going through the summing.

I Have it for one and a half year now, and i really love this box. But one thing I'm not sure about till this day is, if the trim is just an output attenuator or if it influences the saturation by hiiting the 2bus more/less. Here in the video it was turned up for the "pushed" version but I really need to know this now. Till now I cranked up the DAC's to push it harder. Speaking of them, which output level (per channel) would you recommend? Thanks
@jamesrobinson3rdCoast
@jamesrobinson3rdCoast 11 ай бұрын
It's more of an output trim, leaving the unit and hitting your interface A/D returns.. that way you don't clip your preamps while pushing your stems INTO the Orbit from your DAW busses.

Everyone talking about the level matching, and that's fine, you can just rip the video and adjust the levels yourself, then do the test. The real problem is this is a KZbin video. Give us a wav file!
@magick1969
@magick1969 Жыл бұрын
Exactly. KZbin videos are garbage to discern the quality. I know the difference is much greater than what this is showing and Rupert should just link to the different source files to let the audience listen, preferred in 24 bit/48kHz final bounce or 24 bit/96kHz audio. Once I put a RPN MBC after my Avalon in my U87ai chain before going into my Apogee Digital Ensemble it became clear to me that both the Neumann and the Avalon were being wasted w/o such hardware to convert their analog to high end 96kHz digital audio. Bounce my vocals down to 48kHz and it just night and day. Adding the Orbit for Summing very shortly.
