In XCOM 2 I went through all my best friends, then my Facebook friends list and then famous people. In my first playthrough I was doing well for the first few missions, then my HQ got shot down and all my friends, family and favourite celebrities died in a final stand against an onslaught of aliens. Although my youngest sister sacrificed herself to destroy the jammer, allowing my ship to escape with only Julias Caesar remaining alive...

The first time I played Skyrim, I bought a horse. I rode that horse out from Whiterun, and immediately got attacked by a dragon. I didn't even have time to get off the horse before we were both killed. I reloaded and tried to ride in another direction, but the dragon found us. After the third attempt, I loaded a save from right before I got the horse, and never bothered with horses in Skyrim again. And yes, I know you can fix it with mods now, but this was on the 360 and I have just learned to play Skyrim without horses.

When my now-ex best friend were little, we put ourselves into _The Sims 3,_ and eventually conceived a daughter in the game called Jasmine. Even then, I had a rather parental side, so I was very proud of my digital daughter's growth and academic success. After a while, my friend told me that she had lost her save file, or had trouble transferring it to her new tablet or something (I don't remember the specifics), and that the Sims world including Jasmine had been lost. She shook it off, but I've always been quite sensitive and, as I mentioned, parental. Therefore, I was put off playing _The Sims_ series because I had entered a brief period of mourning for a fictional daughter the same age as I was at the time, a daughter I never actually spoke to or held. Years later, when I decided to give one of the protagonists in my writing a daughter, I decided to include Jasmine as their middle name.

This is gonna be a weird one, but I have to say Dark Souls. The NPCs in Lordran say so little but mean so much, and as you progress through the game their fates start to reveal one by one and most of them aren't happy endings. Solaire's and Siegmeyer's death hit me real hard, plus the numerous NPCs that go hollow mid way through the game. I just wanted to kill Gwyn and be done with it, but at that point I wasn't even sure why I was fighting anymore. Feckin' Dark Souls, man.

Artorias' story has got to be one of my favorite backstories in gaming. Both how subtle it is and how strong a character he is when you realize what he's gone through at the time you're fighting him - he's just losing his grip on reality after God knows how long of fighting the Abyss. His sword arm is broken, and he's ditched his shield to use his sword with his off hand. He also left the shield behind to protect Sif, his beloved wolf companion, whom you save, only to later carve 'em to bits for a little magic ring, like a heartless monster.

Still one of the best rpg's out there all the dragon age sequels pale in comparison. On my first playthrough I didn't even know about Leliana so I left lothering and lost a companion, I liked the way you could decide companions fates and they would physically leave if they hated you. Overall the choices were a lot more meaningful too, I think bioware is better at making rpg's that aren't open world.
@bellystraw7 жыл бұрын
gamingdevil800 I agree. It took me 2YEARS to realize that redcliffe had a tavern. Also when you play on pc and add mods like the fully voiced companion, you just have to play it again. Inquisition's open world was a bit better than andromeda's in my opinion though.
@GlasgowMick897 жыл бұрын
You can miss Leliana? I always remembered her being mandatory. Not that that bothered me. I always liked her. Red head, pretty girl, nice voice. The greatest Waifu in the game. Then Morrigan. Dragon Age Origins i spent so much time playing and loved how good the origin stories for each main character you pick. Then going back to places that you started in for extra story and interactions e.g. start as Mage, going back to the Circle. The story is by far 1 of the best of any game i've played. Cared too much about everything in that game.

As you progress through Little Nighmares *SPOILERS* you occasionally get hunger pangs and the lil characters belly rumbles, first you are given food by a friendly stranger, then you find a rat and so on....towards the end however, one of the adorable little gnome's offers you a sausage, presenting it with outstretched arms. As I approach and press the action button to take the sausage, the game instead makes me murder the gnome in cold blood 😢 I was absolutely mortified for like 10 mins, even reloaded the level in case I'd accidentally done it....RIP lil gnome I'll always remember you.

And a game that i think should have been on the list (and I think Hollie would have picked it) STARDEW VALLEY. You think meh farming simulator nothing special and then BOOM you meet these characters that have amazing stories and you feel like you want to help them with their problems and you (well I did) feel bad if you let them down or forget their birthdays.... I'm the same Rob, I cared about my grey Skyrim horse too much. We went off to do a bandit mission and I kept getting killed by the bandit leader even though I had my horse and Lydia fighting too. I remember finally on the sixth time I beat that stupid bandit only to discover at some point during the scuffle my horse had died...and although I had achieved my goal, I wasn't having any of it and so I reloaded the save. It took me a while, but eventually I did it with my horse, Lydia and myself still alive! I have no regrets! :)

I had a gameboy advance when I was younger. It was a special edition that was pikachu-patterned, with his face plastered on the front of that wonderful little yellow time-waster. I got a game for it that was combat focused; it had a magic system with different elements, various characters to choose from and unlock, and a multiplayer battle mode. The magic types all worked fairly similarly, with there being fire, ice and electricity, with each having similar spells with the main difference being the effect the magic had besides merely doing damage. The real amazing part of the game was how it handled death. When dying at any point, you would be visited by the FINAL BOSS of the game(though you don't know that yet), who makes a deal: your soul in exchange for an immortal body. Saying no results in a game over, as expected. However, should you accept, your game will be put on an invisible timer(either that or something tracking progress, but I'm fairly sure it was more time-based) that determined when your soul would be taken. Until that point, your character became invincible and could not ever die. The only downside, aside from the timer, was that were you to reach the final boss, he'd take your soul regardless of how much time you had left, resulting in a prompt game over. I loved that game and played it endlessly, even beating with game without losing my soul quite a few times despite how young I was. There was also a really memorable character you fought several times. I remember he would charge a beam by holding his hands above his head, and would fire it by holding his hands near his crotch. I also vaguely remember unlocking a small troll character whose only move was lighting itself on fire through a ritualistic dance and flying wildly around the screen, dealing damage to anything unfortunate enough to cross my charred path. Sadly, I cannot remember the name of this game, and I lost the cartridge years ago.

Really nice idea for the list, enjoying this show a lot. If I could ask for something, would be more even conversation taking over the monologue format, everyone could be in front of the camera at the same time even if you keep the turns to choose the game you talk about (sorry about not-so-good english).

For me it's with dark cloud. Dark cloud isn't because I enjoy the city building but because of the weapons, I care so much about my best weapons that I don't use them without auto-repair powder at the ready and even then I get nervous. I spend probably 80-90% of my playtime just trying to upgrade my weapons and then upgrading worse weapons so I can then use them to upgrade my best weapons and at this point one of my weapons is so broken that the thirst effect on it just doesn't matter anymore because it can one shot most things... but I don't use it because if it breaks I've lost hundreds of hours to grinding the weapon to where it is now for nothing.

When I played MGSV for the first time, you know there was that bit where your soldier's all die from the virus thats going around your base. And you, as "Snake", have to go in there and clear it out. Well, when I found the last group of soldiers and they all got up and started singing and humming the song, I got so moved that I wrote down all of their names before shooting them all in the head, painlessly. I later ripped up that list because it's a game. Honestly.

Dragon's Dogma - I spent my first playthrough playing this slender, beak-nosed mystic knight. It took me about 60 hours to reach the climax, and by the time I actually fought Grigori I was under heavy sleep deprivation at about 3 in the morning. Grigori said "I will sacrifice your most beloved in return for power." This got me thinking into who that would actually be...I didn't give gifts to people during the main story. And when the scene cut to Madeline looking panicked it brought genuine tears to my eyes. I step forward to challenge the dragon and the cutscene plays again as Madeline flees the castle with one last glance. And then boy did I chase Grigori down across bridges that broke underfoot and pierce the heart amid clouds a league up or more. Finally I mounted the dragon's hand with the last of my health and healing, and triggered 'Sky Dance' - the mystic knight unique skill. The relief I felt when I sailed over the dragon's claw and drove forward with one final strike was palpable. The credits and beautiful aria were accompanied by shots of the trek home to Cassardis, with a closeness implied between the beak-nosed assassin and Madeline. The endgame opens in Cassardis with the character and Madeline waking up together and all I could think was: "I brought you to the way-castle and further, and I brought you back unharmed." Edit: I don't remember if it was relevant, but I played the original DD with the J-rock soundtrack, so the Grigori fight would have been bitching. When Sky Dance landed - I was the dangan.

For several years I was on a break from gaming. I don't really know why.... I guess real adult life got in the way but I still watched videos about games, read news on websites or in magazines.... and time to time a series would make the headlines as one of the best, would feature in most top tens at the highest spots and would be the talk of the gaming community. One day my sister asked me what I wanted for my birthday & I thought "Hey, maybe it's time to check out that franchise. I think there is a special edition now". So I said to her "The Mass Effect Trilogy on PS3". And my (gaming) life was never the same again. 😅 Never before did I care so so much for characters. Never before a story touched me that much. Never before did I struggle this much with the choices I had to make. I remember the 1st time I was on Noveria and I had to decide the Rachni Queen's fate. I had to literally put my controller down and really really think. Everyone talks about the Virmire choice but this choice was the hardest for me... plus my FemShep was romancing Kaidan so Ash had to go boom! See? Easy! 😛 Anyway, I knew at that moment that I was hooked! And then I played the rest of the trilogy and it was legen- wait for it! dary! 😍😍

This isn't very emotional but it's something I will always remember. I was playing skyrim and roaming around with the companion the Jarl at Whiterun gives you. I was exploring the mountains when I came across a polar bear. I died a couple times (this was very early in the game) and on the last few times I decided to let my companion take the hits whilst shot it from afar with my bow. Well on my final attempt the polar bear stood up before smashing his feet down. My companion just shot off the mountain. I killed the bear and searched for my companion. Never found her. To this day she's still missing, probably dead, but I'll never forget how she flew past me whilst fighting that bear

But as I started picking it up, it has turned into the go to game each time I turn my console on. Specially the Sidekick specialty missions, I want to help all the crew to develop their level 6 upgrades.

Loved the settlements in Fallout 4 at first and spent hours on them. The first few had all the scrap removed and were completely surrounded by tall fencing so bandits had to come through my super-fortified gateway. Everyone had their own bed and chair to sit in and there was plenty of food and water. While off questing, if the message came up that the settlement was under attack I dropped everything and fast travelled back to help. But like Nath it became too much. However my solution to dealing with it meant any new settlements got themselves a single automated turret, then I left to carrying on exploring never to return. 'BumTown is under attack!' good luck with that.

The game that tricked me into caring too much was Overwatch. The competitive aspect of it was amazing making you want to constantly climb the ladder and if I dropped Skill Rating (SR) I would play non-stop until I got back to my original SR. But the that got me to care too much was Loot Boxes. This was incredible, if I didn't get what I wanted then I would play until I got another loot box. But if it wasn't great I would do the same thing again until I got a legendary from these Loot Boxes. Thanks a lot Overwatch for being the first game I played for a whole 3 days without sleep not because I loved the multiplayer but because I wanted lootboxes .

I totally get Nathan's issue with Destiny, I had the same problem with D1 and am currently going through it with Warframe (only reason I'm not struggling over D2). Also, I was tricked by Witcher 3 into caring too much. I think the game is amazing but I put down the game and stopped because I became too nervous of what consequences would unfold due to my ill informed decision making after a terrible first go at the Bloody Baron quest.

Caring about "roach" in Witcher 3, even though he gets stuck on buildings and stuff. I like to know that he's okay. Also playing WORMS and one of the worms I've named MUM and they get blown up.

for me it was Dark Souls 3. I started grinding some rare items and ended up doing it for 15-20 hours....lots of items I couldn't even store anymore because my inventory was totally maxed out.

With just the title I thought that this vid would be about games making you care about a character and then killing him/her/it off.

Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker. I put over 200 hours into the HD re-release. Platinumed it, unlocked everything, all my soldiers were S ranks. I didn't realize it tricked me into caring too much until MGS Ground Zeroes. *Spoilers* When Mother Base got destroyed it felt like my 200 hours were all for nothing. My base, my soldiers, Nuke (the kitten), all gone. I felt genuinely sad. Miller was right. It was ours. We built it, damn it!

You know in fallout if you had a survivor who you noticed never sleeps, it's really a synth spy.
