You only really get to know about something when you properly use it! Well, I have used Apple’s Studio Display now for six months straight…hour after hour…day after day. It’s expensive for sure, but is it worth it? Is the camera STILL an issue? What about that power cable? What's it like to spend 12 hours at a time behind it? Is there anything I’d change? What about that stand? Well, in this video, we look at all that plus the speakers and mics. This is a full tear down on the Studio Display!
Guys - I’m not monetised by KZbin yet…even though you may see ads on my videos. So, if you love the content I am putting out, and want to help me review the latest Apple gear….I could really do with your help! Easy ways to support me and the channel here ⬇️

Good honest review. I was planning on buying the studio display, because i love my iMac 27 screen, but after your review i am now sure it the right one for me.Well done.

hi there Chris - as you probably know, I am a massive iMac lover and worked for years on a 5K 27-inch iMac. As good as the display is on the MBP, even a 16-inch screen is too small. I still adore sitting down in front of my Studio Display every day - it still feels like an event. I think you'll love yours - let me know d

Good summary and inline with my findings too 👍 I went with the VESA version (my desk is wall facing so I wouldn’t get to enjoy the rear aesthetics anyway) and I agree this is probably the best mount option for many.

I just got mine to pair up with the 14" MBP and 12.9" iPad Pro. I don't do many video calls, so the webcam is good enough and allows me to remove at least one additional device from my desk. The speakers are ok, but I am not getting rid of my B&W MM-1 desktop speakers anytime soon. I did an A-B comparison and feel they are just way to tinny for my taste and lack the robustness that I am used to with my B&Ws. I also went with the glossy fixed stand. I have no large windows in my basement office and I wanted more of the MBP screen look than the matte finish that I had for the last 5-7 years with my last monitor. My desk space has my server rack at 19" above my desk, so the 18.8" fixed height is perfect for me. Overall, after 3 days, I am loving it much more that my older 2K BenQ monitor that it replaced. Great info!

Hi ya Lou - B&W desk speakers eh? Nice touch. Clearly, a man that enjoys good sound then. Yeah, they will be better than the built-in speakers, but still, they are not too shabby for laptop speakers huh? Have you tried Continuity Camera yet? It works a dream! Loving the server rack too - sounds a pretty serious workspace! Yup, I think the Studio Display will fit in ever so well in your set-up. I am delighted with my one!

@@DavidLewisTech Yes, B&W. LOL. They are the discontinued MM-1s. They were part of the same line as the Zeppelin speaker. For a display speaker, the built-in ones do a great job. Had I not had the B&W desktop speakers, I would have probaly simplified and got rid of the external speakers. However, the B&W speakers sound more grounded when watching content on the display than the built-in ones. I tried Continuity Camera with my iPhone 12 Pro Max and MBP once with my son over Facetime to try it. It was certainly a better looking experience than the very old Logitech webcam that I had and better than the built-in MBP camera. Doing an A-B test with just the FaceTime app (no real call) shows that my old Logitech was much too contrasty and grainy. I actually look closer to what I really look like with the built-in Studio Display camera. Again, I am 100% pleased with my purchase. :)

Living in Australia, we have a much lower-profile three-pin mains plug than the chunky one used in the UK, I have had no problems with the power cable on my VESA mount Studio Display. For the past week I've been using an Insta360 Link webcam that's fantastic. Continuity camera is also quite effective but I often need to be using the iPhone for demonstration purposes, which negate its use as a webcam.

Thanks for the great video and review. I watched your other one and liked it too. I pulled the trigger on one and am fighting early buyer's remorse while I wait for it to arrive (what if it doesn’t wow me? What if some quirks annoy me?). I’m replacing two aging 1080 monitors. While my work has shifted from being content production-focused, I still make decisions based on those capabilities; I want something beautiful if I’m to look at it for eight or nine hours a day.

hi Tristan - and thanks for the really positive comments. I am just finishing off this weeks video now. You hit the nail on the head - sometimes it is not about numbers and stats, but aesthetics and appeal. I love sitting down in front of I every day. And speaking to a fellow creator, you WILL feel creative in front of it! Great purchase!

I find it interesting that for so many years, iMac owners have been living with a tilt only stand similar to the one on your Studio Display. Now, all of a sudden, that stand is such a pain point?

ASD is maybe the most polarizing Apple product out there. I get why - the mix of features/specs and the price are unusual and shocking. However for the right buyer there is absolutely no substitute. To my eye the scaling on 4K monitors and Apple just isn't satisfactory. I don't game so refresh rate isn't all that important - and.I agree that ProMotion is much more noticeable on the small screens. I can't see much difference b/w my ASDs and my 14" iMac in terms of smoothness. I started with one ASD and now own three because they are that good. Note: the third one I bought was VESA and candidly I wish I'd just gone with the tilt like the others.

hi there Tim - I may become part of your club soon enough, and become a multi-ASD owner....I had to work at home this weekend without it, and it was a painful experience!! They may have faults, but overall they suit my needs. I'd go VESA next time too. I wonder how good that Pro Display XDR really is as well?

@@DavidLewisTech I owned an XDR. It's incredible and if money is no object, for sure. But I'd rather have 3 ASD vs. one XDR. Plus it lacks sound, camera, etc. I think it only makes sense if one can justify it for graphics reasons. But I do miss it.

@@timstafford6815 I think I am more with you....although my work is colour critical, not to the tune of £6000! I think another ASD makes more sense!

Curious why you wish you had gone tilt instead of VESA? After years of people owning iMacs with tilt only displays, you would think more people would be happy with tilt stands on the ASD.

@@somelaveenguy6822 I have three of them connected to the same Mac Studio. I wish they just all looked exactly the same. I never use the ability to rotate the VESA mounted monitor and I don't find them too low (as some folks do). That simple - just the aesthetics.
