I have always loved the Castlevania games, but they’re so hard that I can’t stand to play them without using save states to make it easier. I typically play the classic games on the Castlevania Anniversary Collection, and although Castlevania Bloodlines is the superior game in many ways, I find myself returning to Castlevania III much more often. I have played through Dracula’s Curse many times and gotten all the endings for every character, including Trevor by himself (which was a total b*tch to pull off even with saves) but I still haven’t finished my playthrough of Bloodlines as Eric. So even though I’m inclined to say the Genesis game is better, my actions make it pretty clear which one is my favorite. I can’t really argue with myself on that, so I can see where they’re coming from. I hadn’t given it much thought until I saw this video, but yeah…

Revenge of the Joker & Double Dragon (geez I can't believe how well the graphics have held up) were amazing on the NES & look like they still are. Castlevania 3 is amazing as well but comparing it to its amazing 16bit counterparts is like comparing Leonardo, Donatello, Michaelangelo, & Raphael. All masterpieces in their own right.

The controls of Castlevania 3 are perfectly fine. The thing is that NES CV arcadey games are mostly about memorizing enemy spawn and placement. Anyone complaining about the controls missed the point of how to play CV3. I beat Castlevania 3 with every single character on the original NES when I was 13 years old. I repeat, I beat the game on the original hardware with every character with only Trevor Belmont too. And I didn't do that on an emulator that uses game saves at every step of the way as "gamers" do these days. I remember playing Castlevania Bloodlines as well and not feeling the game at all. It's not a bad game but it doesn't come close to the awesomeness of CV3. I suspect Bloodline fans are mostly European gamers because the NES never was big over there. They were too busy playing (and making) Spectrum or Commodore games.

Great topic. Other games where the NES destroys the Megadrive/Genesis. 1. The Little Mermaid. 2. Tailspin. 3. Ninja Gaiden. The NES version went its own direction, to the benefit of the final product. By contrast, the Genesis port was faithful to the Arcade, and thus worse.

as a composer, i must say, i understand that you do not like the compositions for the mega drive games stated here :) it is actually pretty difficult to tinker with the FM Soundchip of the Sega Mega Drive / Genesis. I think you were spot on with most of these comparisons until you got to Castlevania. Bloodlines, CV3 and SCIV are all really different from each other so it's a big stretch to compare them because they're not even close to the same games. I will say I prefer the Captain America/Avengers game on Genesis over the NES one. Great job on this vid!

So 1st: I LOVE the videos - been watching you since the first collab you had with Top Hat Gaming Man. My 12 year old son really loved the video you made on Chinese Megaman - he speaks to me about that video to this day ;) As for myself I remember fondly the 8-bits era of Sunsoft - to me it meant a Sunsoft logo on games in those days more than any seal of quality from Nintendo. A bit like most releases from Konami or Capcom that era and beyond.
@st1ka2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, sunsoft was amazing during the 8-bit era, but it seems that during the 16-bit era they became more of a publisher instead of a developer and their quality dipped significantely imo :\
@TheGGTK2 жыл бұрын
@@st1ka Oh yes I agree completely, thats why I'm holding their 8 bit era releases (gameboy included) in such high regards - the following generation went down the drain - sadly. To me it was like - ok now on the 16bit consoles some company I cannot trust what I could in the past generation. By the way do you have any memories about C64 in Portugal ? I 1st played Double Dragon II on a C64 [floppy] at home. I have fond memories of the system, we used to share games so much on it and later on PC as on consoles it was not really possible to copy games in those days.

To be fair the NES got its ass kicked by the weaker Atari 2600 ports on a few occasions. For example Pitfall 2 The Lost Caverns on Atari is MUCH BETTER than Super Pitfall (the same game) on the NES. Winter Olympics also better on the weaker Atari over its NES counter port. It happens sometimes 🤯

Awesome video, I really enjoy your content, the Castlevania video is my favourite so far, it was my first favourite game ever aswell as DOOM, growing up here in South Africa we only had the Famicom, I had no idea the NES existed until years later, a friend of mine had a Sega Genesis and I only played a few games at the time, Golden Axe, Streets Of Rage and Ex Mutants, I still enjoyed my Famicom more, Castlevania was the first game I was so proud of myself for beating, when I got Simons Quest I loved it but alas couldn't finish it because of the translation thing and back then I had no access to walkthroughs, for a very long time I had no idea Dracula's Curse or Bloodlines existed, when I found out about emulation I was so excited to play them, Dracula's Curse is my favourite Castlevania, when PS1 came out and I got Symphony Of The Night, man I was obsessed with it, I count Symphony Of The Night as my favourite aswell, I can't pick between Dracula's Curse and SOTN so I pick both, you should make a video about your gaming journey, I think it would be interesting n_n

Late comment but part of the reason why a lot of the earlier genesis titles sound like that is because of the dev tools they were using, specifically GEMS (genesis editor music and sound). IIRC the software has a list of default sounds to choose from and many devs stuck to making due with those sounds as changing them was rather complicated. I saw a video about it but I can't remember what it was called.

I personally enjoyed captain America and the avengers on the Sega Genesis more because of it's living interactive comic book look & feel that draws me into that comic book world. There's plenty of on screen enemies of different types to battle with plenty of different attack behaviors for each enemy type that keeps the flow of the action from becoming stale that kept me immersed in the action from start to finish. The game has some nice parallax scrolling effects in certain levels with plenty of nice & diverse sprite and animations happening simultaneously with everything else going on at once that makes everything look and feel busy in the environments of levels. The game gives 4 different avengers to choose from with each avenger offering up enough diversity on abilities to distinct each avenger which adds some variety to cater to different play styles to suit the player best. Also there's the option of a two player game for some couch co-op fun with a friend. The in game music has some pretty decent tunes that keeps the flow of the action going and sound effects and voice samples are still pretty passable imo and don't ruin the experience but just add to the overall fun and living interactive comic book look and feel it's going with.

I appreciate hearing a Megadrive fan who calls out how the music can sound in a lot of games, lol. Have to say Blaster Master looks pretty great, especially the outside area. This may sound a bit like hyperbole, but I feel like it's almost arguable that Nintendo's biggest innovation with the SNES, the thing about it that had and still does have the most enduring impact on the industry (besides Nintendo's games themselves), is the sound chip it used, which was so above and beyond anything else at the time, and almost had no ceiling to the quality possible with it depending on how much effort the composer was willing to put into programming custom instrument samples (I don't know exactly how it worked, just that that's something a lot of composers talk about in interviews. Like, Actraiser was apparently very influential to a lot of Japanese SNES composers, because it showed the power of that custom Yamaha chip very early in the system's life. If you wanted anything that sounded remotely as good as the SNES on PC, you were paying more money for just the sound card than a SNES cost itself back then... and other consoles simply didn't remotely compete until CDs became the standard medium... and even then, all that showed for many years was how much better SNES music still sounded than the vast majority of stuff composed "with no limits" for a CD using system, until all the great Japanese composers had eventually migrated to Sony projects. And the beauty of that music is honestly such a massive part of my nostalgia and positive feelings for the SNES and its games. I could listen to the soundtrack to Chrono Trigger or Final Fantasy 6 almost endlessly.... and nothing since has ever sounded quite like that Yamaha chip, with its insanely pleasant base reverb, and its open-ended, custom possibilities for composers leading to any tendency towards perfectionism having full outlets for that creative drive, as opposed to a predefined library of stock samples like was the standard for everything else back then.
@st1ka2 жыл бұрын
Ironically, I will say I generally prefer Sega Genesis sound over SNES sound. I understand that the SNES sound chip is more advanced, but the Mega Drive sound chip sounds more... videogame-y I guess? Whereas the SNES music often approaches that odd border between pre CD audio? Still, it's just my preference and there are SNES soundtracks that are breath taking like Chrono Trigger or Final Fantasy 6. But on the other hand, I feel nothing on the SNES sounds as raw and powerful as Thunderforce 4, so it really depends.
