Yeah you don't need a whole new wire harness for an IDI, speaking from experience..... Just run a few new wires as needed. Most commonly replaced first is the wire that goes from the key to the starter relay.

@worthshop2 жыл бұрын
If it is having issues starting when hot this will not remedy your issue. More than likely your injection pump is going bad. To test that theory, dump cold water over the injection pump when it will not start. If it starts after being cooled off, you need to replace the pump. Good luck with your project, and God bless.

I installed a new controller and relay. Replaced all the GPs except 1 because it’s broken in the intake. Should the relay click? I pulled one GP and it isn’t heating… what could be the problem?
@h20cycle1 Жыл бұрын
Very clear and easy to follow. Unfortunately, I must have done something wrong. My switch (button) does click the solenoid but no heating of glow plugs occurs. However, if I jump the two main posts, GP’s heat up great so I do have power to the solenoid (controller). Possible the power from that blue wire isn’t strong enough to heat my glow plugs? Glow plugs are brand new and tested as working.
@h20cycle1 Жыл бұрын
Actually, thinking I may have a harness issue. Assumed GP’s warmed when I jumped the two posts because the truck started. Thinking now maybe she started for the first time in days because it was 85 degrees out. Looking at harness now.
@worthshop Жыл бұрын
Use a electric tester and test fir continuity through wires. You can also use a test light ground one end any put the other end inside one of your glow plug connectors. See if the light turns on when you cycle the glow plugs. The blue wire is just to turn on the wait to start light. White wire is the one that actually triggers the solonoid.

Hey there neighbor, really enjoying your vidyas here in Clarkston WA. We just picked up a 91 7.3, previous owner just replaced the glow plugs (motorcraft) but the relay just clicks with the key on, wait to start light goes off immediately and she needs the Cosby sauce to cold start. Bad relay or harness? Would the manual gp button be worth a shot in this case? I’ll test the glow plugs to be sure they’re good. Thanks and keep the dank content comin!
@worthshop2 жыл бұрын
Hi 👋 Thanks for checking out my chanel. I personally am a fan of a manual glow plug button. It allows me to cycle the plugs myself, and only when needed. Also cheaper than replacing the relay when malfunctionin. Sounds like probably your relay is having trouble. So I'd definitely go for a manual button in that case, button and some wire is less than $10 the new relay closer to $100 good luck with your project. Have any more questions I will answer the best I can just ask.
@nonubz78772 жыл бұрын
Sounds like I should do the manual gp button anyways, appreciate your input and knowledge! I ohm’d out all the glow plugs and they’re at .5 and look new. The relay also looks new..the glow plug harness looks original so I’m going to replace that. Just installed a factory throttle cable and turned the pump up just shy of a couple flats. Boy howdy she’s a ripper now!

Hey this is off topic I have been watching your videos your doing a great job I have a 1986 250 with the 6.9 idi I'm having trouble with a knocking sound that just decided to start out of nowhere It's not bottom end it sounds like a bad injector or a collapsed lifter but I'm not sure and I really don't want to take the engine apart with out having some idea Motor runs and revs fine sound is very faint at idle and you hear it more when reved any ideas would be greatly appreciated Thank you
@worthshop Жыл бұрын
In my experience a knock is usually caused by a bad injector in the idi engines. You can get a automotive stethoscope and listen at tge injectors and usually pinpoint which injector sounds different. Loosen up that injector line with engine running and see if the knock goes away.

Hey man. Great vid but you didn't show ID the button connection. Does the wire coming off the controller connect to the button ground or to the button power out? I'm confused because guys say that "wire to ground" but what's that for to do with a three pronged button or switch?
@worthshop Жыл бұрын
You have the wrong kind of button or switch. You need a momentary push button switch with 2 prongs. 1 prong goes to ground, the other prong goes to the wire added to the controller. When you push the button it will send ground or negative current through the button and down that wire turning on the controller and glow plugs. Hope this info helps. Good luck with your project, and God bless.

Say Aspie , I appreciate your videos have a 93 , 7.3 idi Ford f"250. I replaced control box , relay , glowplugs. Still clicking I had to put barrel connectors on the wires to the glow plugs . 2 questions glow plug light comes on for about 3 seconds. Does you think I might have a bad box even thou it's new , the glow plug harness should have juice running thru it when in start position ? I am about to the point that I am going to run straight to my glow plugs What do you think ?
@worthshop Жыл бұрын
I would suspect maybe the barrel connectors are not making a good connection. I personally like to put everything I can on buttons and switches to control it myself. But that is just me. Glow plug controller gets power all the time from the big wires from starter solonoid. Small red wire gets power whenever key is on. Glow plugs only get power from the controller for about 8 seconds when the key is first turned on. Your controller could possibly have come messed up even though new. But I would check other stuff first.

Wouldn't it be easier to replace your bad glow plugs? There is a reason why the relay ticks. Its not sending constant voltage to the plugs, hence not frying them, and potentially blowing the lower element up. Which sucks as you surely know. But I get ya on the cold starts especially living in South Dakota. Cant imagine half a can of ether is any better, probably worse. Let me know if you ever did replace the plugs. I wonder if the ones you pull are the crappy autolights.. Not the great motocraft ZD-9s. Just did the injectors on mine (93 IDI NA) and none of them had the 3rd/lower o rings. Guy had the motor rebuilt less than 40k miles ago. Now on to the glow plugs. I expect they are the crappy ones, turning a 1 hour job into a 20 hour one if I cant get them out. :(. Have any tips on that ?

Hey Aspie, I tried doing the same thing but I couldn’t get it to work. The only difference is that instead of connecting to the blue wire, I went straight to power since I wanted the glow plug light to come on still. Not sure if that makes a difference or that could be the problem. I have a 6.9 but I bought the 7.3 glow plug system, changed the glow plugs and the bullet receptacle female connections. If you have the time, could you explain what all the wires you have did? By saying its color and I’ll go back to the video to re-watch and try this again. I always appreciate your feedback and videos! Hope your channel grows!

You send negative or ground to the white wire, not positive. White turns on the glow plugs. The blue wire is for the glow plug wait to start light. Negative or ground is also what turns it on, not positive.

@worthshop2 жыл бұрын
7-10 seconds is how long they usually stay on if working properly, the clicking on and off when first started is normal too. When I buy an idi I usually just replace glow plugs with motorcraft zd-9 so I know they are new and functioning properly unless I buy it from someone who tells me they were just replaced. I also usually replace the cdr valve as my initial tune up so I know it is good. Thanks for watching and appreciate the comment.

@DOSputin Жыл бұрын
This is really bad advice. The reason that your glow plug relay is turning off quickly is because one or more of your glow plugs have failed. Service your glow plugs. With a simple and cheap multimeter you can test each glow plug for appropriate resistance to determine if it is still good or if it has failed. For the International Harvester 7.3 indirect injection diesel engine, a functioning glow plug typically shows a resistance of around 0.6 to 2 ohms when measured from the terminal to ground. If the resistance is significantly higher or if there's no continuity, it suggests that the glow plug may be faulty and needs replacement. It's important to use a multimeter for accurate measurement and to ensure the engine is off and cool during the testing.
