EDIT: I know we reached 45K likes (how? 😭). I need to order new cricket jam and find a way to do this without doing a face reveal. I will incorporate it in the next video about the ants when I get enough footage to make an interesting video. It won't be the next video on the channel but don't worry it will be here!

I’ve been keeping ants for a few years now, they are fun to watch ofc, and some species are pretty crazy but it looks like you did your research, Lasius niger is definitely a beginner species, and they love digging, so this is the perfect setup.that aside I would recommend keeping big headed ants if your interested in more, they have cool majors, or carpenter ants simply because of their size they would be easy to watch and they are easy to keep.

I would liek the easiest to handle, nothing extar fancy - btu you are right that little bit larger species are better to watch. I would like to as well have a formicarium (is it call that way?) with natural sand and not the printed one , because of the natural look :) do you have soem tip on where to gatehr information? :D

Colony looks good. That terrarium is a bit big for them and you will have a hard time adjusting to the colonys needs in that. I would recommend blocking it off until they get bigger if they move back into the tube. I think it might be a good idea to dissolve that honey in some water because they can have a hard time digesting thick honey like that. otherwise you can just make sugar water by mixing one part sugar with 3 parts water and feed them that. that's what i usually do. Also by spraying the ground you make it easier for them to nest in it so try keeping the ground sand dry and only water the back wall part because they won't nest in dry sand. If you have any other questions about keeping them feel free to ask under this comment.
@HomemadeEcosystems
@HomemadeEcosystems Жыл бұрын
Thank you for the tips! I diluted the honey. The tube is still in there and the queen seems to go back at night, do you think it is a good idea to just darken the tube so they can stay there untill they are ready to move out?
@marvin3202
@marvin3202 Жыл бұрын
@@HomemadeEcosystems that’s what I would do and then when the whole colony moves into the tube you can try blocking off that nest part. I have the same setup and put the ants in as a beginner like you and had a hard time adjusting to the colony’s needs and getting stuff like humidity right without flooding them. Keeping them in the test tube but still letting them eat from the box is much easier and then when they grow to 100-200 workers you can move into the nest on the back.
@HomemadeEcosystems
@HomemadeEcosystems Жыл бұрын
@@marvin3202 it is only a few workers that come out with the queen not all so that won't be possible, but I will darken the tube so the queen can stay there during the day, maybe the rest of the workers will come out than too
@marvin3202

Good choice of species. Lasius niger is good starter ant for a beginner. Reasonably resilient, colony grows quickly, is not a picky eater. Though you might want to hibernate them over the winter. Put them into cool, dark space for couple of weeks - keep temperature couple of degrees above freezing, make sure the nest won't dry out. Come spring, colony should start breeding vigorously. When they have a lot of brood, give them more protein food larvae need to grow - insects, a bit of unsalted boiled egg yolk and even small bits of raw meat.

you should add some more water to the nest. The water should go through the entire nest at least once, so the clay gets wet and can harden a little when it dries again. Otherwise the tunnels might collapse.

You are giving a little too much food for the ants for the time being because it's just a small colony. They will end up disposing the remaining leftovers and leave it. It will risk mole growth in the leftovers. You have to clean up the trash they left and waste your time, so my advice is to give less food so you don't have to clean.
