The obstacle is the way. I first heard this saying from a podcast or video I saw you speak in a few years ago. It really changed how I look at challenges, and all the challenges I have faced in my life. It's made me grateful to have lived through an incredibly hard, difficult, tragic childhood - I know I'm the person I am today because of it, and I'm happy about that.

I'm 17 and I accidentally taught myself stoicism before I even found out about it, after my parents split up in a very big argument on the 23rd of December 2019... my Xmas was still amazing and I slowly taught myself stoicism from there on. But I only found out about it 3 months ago... it feels good to know that I'm not the only one who felt like this, for a while I was confused on why I thought like this. But now I'm doing great, my life's so great even when I'm in such a bad place I can still find happiness in daily life and work on myself for the better.

When I am in traffic I never think of it as a contest or a race. I am almost never in a rush. I take my time. I enjoy the trip. If someone cuts me off I may get a bit annoyed. But there is zero anger zero rage. I do not assume other drivers will do anything. I go slow and defensive. Works.
@deez3063
@deez3063 2 жыл бұрын
@@teddymills1 defensive driving is great, but going slow is actually dangerous. Be sure to stay in the right lane please. Slow drivers in the left lane/people going slow because they assume someone's tailgating them, are much more dangerous than fast drivers that try to keep traffic moving, and use their signals. Don't just go slow, be defensive and reasonable.

The hardest one for me was ego is the enemy. With dysfunctional parents I was imprinted with a false sense of self. To compensate I developed a mythology and an ego. For nearly 10+ years I struggled to find happiness and connection because of it. The ego creates a hall of mirrors: the more you look for your own reflection, the less you're able to see the exit door or see others trying to help you.

I have heard over and over 'the obstacle is the way' but was unsure how to implement that in my own life until today. I had an issue with a customer that received the wrong product and was going to cost me almost $300 to ship and restock. It was a combination of errors on several levels to. I had to work with manager of the company who was able to redirect the product to a different location for use in another venue and would cost me nothing. At first it troubled me, but then I did my best to work through the problem to find a solution with someone that could absolutely help. Now I get it.

Just a little comment on what Holiday said about the notion that in Christianity, if you break one (or more) of the ten commandments you go to hell... That's a big misunderstanding... It's not as simple as that. Actually I find a lot of common ground between Christianity and Stoicism, as a Christian myself, I found stoicism to be an excellent way to interpret life and as a great practical example on how to conduct ourselves in life. Actually, if I may, there are rumors that Christ disciples actually engaged in some kind of debate with stoics, talking about the "Logos"... It's just a rumor... But an interesting one... Good day everyone and keep up the great work with the Daily Stoic!

Do the right thing the right way for the right reason, love fate, prepare for the worst, the obstacle is the way and an opportunity, ego is the enemy, what is bad for the hive is bad for the bee, meditate on mortality

Amor Fati - The stoics life is fire, and obstacles are fuel - Amor Fati, the love of fate Premiditato Memorium- The expected blows of fortune, falls less heavily than the unexpected - expect the worst and observe The Obstacle is the Way - Each obstacle is an opportunity to practise your virtues and move forward - The struggle of adversity makes us great Ego is the Enemy- you are not special, the world does not revolve around you - is what you are doing pride/ arrogance filled or does it align with your virtues Memento Mori - Medidate on your mortality - everdya you wake up is a day given to you, be grateful and live each day with purpose as if it's your last. Because it could be.

I just bought 2 of your books. I'm 100 percent on board with stoicism! Philosophy was one of my favorite classes in college. I have my bachelor's in Psychology and so I have a lot of interest in all philosophy, it's our starting and ending blocks in understand the mind and individuals.

I've been watching a few of your videos these last few weeks. Thank you for your excellent content. The one thing i have taken from them is to be adaptable. Circumstances rarely turn out as planned, so be ready to bend as to how the winds of fate blow.

This video is very similar to my favourite book called Spiritual Growth by Sanaya Roman. It’s about alchemising situations and acting from your higher self. The teachings resonate.

correction christians do believe that but we also believe that someone who commits sin IS indeed unhappy. you’re finding an outlet to whatever issues you have by rebelling. stoicism has taken many principles from the bible without acknowledging the wisdom that came from The Most High. All praises to the creator for already knowin these things & putting in in the word!

Hey, this was great. Especially your point on virtue, and on Momento Mori. As a Christian, I'd like to clarify that we don't believe everyone goes to hell for doing wrong. We believe everyone deserves hell for doing wrong. We believe there is salvation in Christ, now He can save us from doing wrong, and in eternity He saves us from hell. I know this wasn't meant to misrepresent. It's misunderstood a lot.
