For folks who insist on using fresh aloe leaves be aware there is a compound in them (that is usually processed out when you buy plain old aloe gel or aloe skin care products in the store) similar to latex. You can drain it off by cutting the leaf, turning it cut side down and leaving it to drain for about 20 minutes until you see a yellow substance has come out.

I am 51 yrs old and am from the U.K. When I was 7 I went on holiday with a friend and her parents and we went to the beach where we stayed all day. I have very fair skin and was wearing a one piece swimming costume with a low back and was in and out of the water as 7yr old children do. Come the evening my back was burnt to a crisp (not surprising considering the sun is a fairly rare commodity in the U.K. and living a distance from the beach a swimming costume was something that was only used to go to the indoor swimming pool so the skin on my back had probably never seen the sun before that outing) plus at that time nobody had heard of sunscreen so I can’t really blame my friends parents (however I do feel that they showed a huge lack of common sense leaving children uncovered in the sun ALL day!). By late evening my entire back was one big liquid filled blister and I had the symptoms for sunstroke so my mother was called and I was taken to the emergency room. From what I’ve been told my entire back was covered in some kind of thick paste with a layer of gauze placed on top which was left on for some days before I had to return to the hospital to have this paste/gauze cut up into small squares and peeled off my back. Thankfully I don’t remember ANY of this but my mother said that three nurses had to hold me down for the Dr to slowly peel off the covering. Since that day my back has NEVER been exposed to the sun. Some 30 yrs later I noticed that a mole had appeared on my back, in fact lots of moles and freckles had appeared so I thought I better get them checked (not really expecting anything of concern after all I never sunbathed and NEVER had my back uncovered. The result of the check was 8 suspicious moles that needed removing, all of which ended up being cancerous. Since then I see a dermatologist regularly and to date I have had 42 moles/freckles removed from my back, 37 of which have been cancerous (thankfully all have been successfully removed and I haven’t needed further treatment). Needless to say I’ll be continuing to have my back checked regularly and I have no doubt whatsoever that I’ll have more areas that need to be removed. My back now looks like a worn out crumpled British road map due to the dips, divots and scars of varying lengths and widths (depending on the margin the surgeon has had to remove). So when people preach about the use of sunscreen PLEASE listen and when you hear the line “you have to go red first to get a good suntan” DON’T listen! Once the skin is red the damage is done and it only takes ONE episode of sunburn to cause skin cancer in later life. For me the sun and that one solitary episode of sunburn has been the (unwanted) gift that keeps on giving!!

Watching this right now with a healing sunburn. I didn't realize it was a sunburn because I was out in the sun only for about 20-30 minutes and with sunscreen on, and the burning on my cheeks started a day or so later when I'd stayed home. I unknowingly rubbed at my face so much before I realized what it was. This is also my first burn so this video is really helpful!

I got a horrible sunburn on my back as a child, I fell asleep a whole afternoon on a bright summer day 😳. My back was blistered and the pain was so bad… A few years ago, I got about 50 moles all over my back and I’m pretty sure it’s a consequence of that burn. I’ve had a dermatologist check them and everything is fine , but I have to watch for any change. Not fun.

I had a dermatologist tell me many years ago to put a zinc sunscreen on a sunburn. She said it keeps the skin moisturized, and the zinc can help the burn feel better. I keep one in the fridge (even though I am religious about wearing sunscreen and hope I don't ever get a burn again) just in case. I don't know if what she said was true, but whenever I've done that trick, it seems to feel a lot better more quickly, and I don't end up peeling afterwards.

Once again thank you dr dray for providing useful skin health knowledge as usual, i believe you really helped a lot of people out there by telling the facts and in my opinion, prove them with urself as example. I couldnt believe you look so young in terms of skin condition at your age which seems illogical, but now i kinda get into realising that maybe after all this is how ppl at that age normally shud look like. But most ppl are just not keeping up with the things they should have done on their skin so they get to look older than they should and other people got into believing thats the way of look for that particular age. The skin knowledges you got me into really helped me a lot. Not only for the purpose of looking good, but a well barrier that keeps me functioning. Hope u have a nice day!

I would think so. Your skin will be completely untanned and therefore have no natural protection. As a hiker/camper, I struggle with this question as well. Do I allow some careful, gradual tanning in early summer, in case I'm ever out and about without sunscreen for some reason? Or do I diligently apply sunscreen and risk getting a real sunscreen, should that ever happen? Personally, I opt for always putting sunscreen on my face, since that is exposed to UV year round and I can always shade it with a hat or shirt in an emergency. But for my arms and legs, which only see the sun during summer, I will allow some tanning. Nothing drastic...but I don't want to immediately burn, if my sunscreen is comprised by sweat or worn off by sitting on the ground or whatever.

I am pretty good about facial sunscreen, but neglect to put it on my body unless I'm at the pool. I went to a Pride March yesterday, and my arms and chest are cooked!😫My face burned a little around my big sunglasses even with the spf50 I had on. I haven't burnt like this in a long time, and it hurts. I put ice packs wrapped in cloth on it last night, and then hydrocortisone and shea butter lotion. I'm buying some aloe today!

hi dr dray, I was wondering what your opinion is on SunGuard? It's a laundry powder that claims to give UV protection to clothing
@db-gb5xi2 жыл бұрын
Yes, she's talked about it in one of her sun protective clothing videos.

I will begin radiation for breast cancer next month. Can you address steps I can take now to help my skin tolerate the burn? I already use CeraVe right out of the shower, and I've started also applying it to my armpit (lymph nodes showed micrometastasis, so that area will also receive radiation). I've heard calendula lotion can help. I'm allergic to sulpha drugs, so I think Silvadene won't be an option for me.

Have you checked out her video, manuka honey skin benefits? I think she addresses how it's used in healing.

I'm South Asian, I've never experienced sunburn. This summer has been really awful. I noticed my face feels leathery on the high points of my face and it's discoloured. I wear sunscreen always. 😢

Even though I'm pale and burn pretty easily, I've never burned faster than being pregnant! I'm pregnant for the first time, on my 9th month and sat outside for 2 hrs and my thighs got burnt. I'm 31 and I've NEVER gotten burnt in 2 hrs. I'm assuming it's from all the extra blood pumping from the pregnancy.

I know you mean well. However as I recall, sunburn can be very painful and I am not sure I would have the self discipline to refrain from using aloe with lidocaine to soothe the sunburn. Perhaps you would consider mentioning some products to try as a last resort. Thanks, Brenda

I find it fascinating that while the sun is so damaging to the skin, the use of UVB lights in a Dermatologists office cab be so effective in treating serious skin conditions. I had a condition called Lichen Planus that caused horrible itchy red, raised bumps all over my body. I felt like a monster. But after being put on steroids and antibiotics with zero effects, I drew the line at Biologics and opted for the UVB booth. Within 4 months of the treatment 3x's per week, my skin was completely clear. What else helped? Aloe. There still is nothing more soothing on my skin when it is sunburned than aloe.
When she says 5 or more sunburns, does she mean BAD sunburns? Because... uh... Every time I spend a lot of time outdoors (like swimming), even if I zealously apply and reapply a high SPF sunscreen on my face, my cheeks will still burn a little. I have no clue how to stop it.

What is the best SPF I put sunscreen on, I get a sunburn even if only out in the sun for a few hours. Why are some people more prone to sunburns 😞

Does recently exfoliating skin using just a mitt(no chemical exfoliants) increase the chance of a sunburn or is the risk the same on skin that has not been exfoliated in a few weeks? Exfoliating as in removing the dead skin that rolls off when you rub it? Does this dead skin provide any protection from uv rays? Does recently exfoliated skin have less protection than skin that hasn't been exfoliated in weeks?

I used a factor 50 top rated once a day spray. Even though it was meant to last 10 hours was very conscious on my boat trip and used it 4 times in the space of 6 hours. I’ve burned soooo badly. I’m in absolute agony and it’s ruining my first holiday in 11 years that I’m currently on with my son for his 18th Birthday. I’m so upset as I was being strict with the sunscreen 😞
