Replaced the bushings in my 99 blazer 3 times before I found this video. Should have done this the first time. It works great

I love the "prick" at :22 because that's exactly how I feel about it! I've been fighting with doors on a 2004 Blazer "camp truck" for a long time. All the relevant videos YT are about how to replace the pins - except this one. There are a few other options that involve welding a plate to the inner hinge, and I considered bolting something in there (as I don't/can't weld). Without question, this is the perfect, simple, easy to see (then why didn't anyone else see it?) solution. I'll fix my doors and let everyone know how it worked out. This

Well, got this done on driver's side and it worked pretty good. Was a lot more difficult that I expected, getting the bottom one in cost my wife's precious ears quite a few f-bombs, but at the end of the day, problem solved. Thanks again.

Nice work man, I've found the same issue using Dorman pins on my 2000 Blazer, also one thing I've ran across on GMC and Chevy's is that I almost always have to retrofit something. Thanks for the tip on using bolts!

Had absolutely nothing to lose trying this. Hinges on my 99 blazer are shot, new pins and bushings was going to be a waste of money, and I could no see spending the money for new hinges. The holes on my door half of the hinge were worn to the point they were breaking out. I tack welded them and then welded a grade 8 washer on them to stiffen the whole mess up. Worked like a charm. My striker was also starting to test out. When I straightened it up and started welding it back in place I found it was already repaired once before and the sheet metal was ground thin. I used an 1/8 inch by 2x2 angle, fastening it to the face of the pillar by bolts, drilling it out and mounting the striker directly to the angle as the angle I used was the same thickness as the shims behind the striker. After giving everything a bath in lithium grease that door swings, closes, and works as good as one on the show room floor without the cost and headache of installing new hinges.

Good job I had thought of welding washers to the hinge also , this was just a little less work

Excellent video. Just got done doing this with my 2001 sonoma. I had no help so I used a ladder with ratchet strap and a jack to hold up the door.

I just finished doing this mod, the door lines up probably better than it ever has. Thanks for the video. Also, I used 4.5 inch bolts and it fits almost perfect.

I've replaced hinge pins & bushings on my car, similar situation. However, I drilled out the door hinge to include oversize bushings. Without bushings, you risk wearing out the bore & you now will need to go with an even larger bolt next time or add bushings. The bushing is intended to be the sacrificial part in this system, not the steel hinge parts.

Except I just dropped new pins and bushings in mine because the top hole on the top hinge was worn over the years to look like the number 8 lol and since the bushing drops into the hole on the door frame half of the hinge on that hole, and the door half rides on the naked pin above the bushing, the door STILL sagged horribly even after replacing everything. Now I just have really shiny new parts in there, and the same door sagging issue I had before, it's incredibly frustrating. Someone's said to use JB Weld in the worn half of the hole to make the "8" look like an "o" again. We'll see if that works i guess although I'm not super optimistic at all. Wish me luck! 🤞

I understand , but with the stainless washers and a periodic shot of lube these doors are still holding up fine today .

@@jawkneebebad Good deal. Gotta keep up with these things to avoid having issues.

This is a fine idea to get some more life out of worn out hinges. I bought the hardware to do this, and when I got the door off, I realized that the top hinge holes were actually egged out bigger than 1/2 inch. Crazy! Not really enough meat left to go any bigger. Ugh. Hinge replacement, here I come.

The spring compression tool is about 15 bucks on amazon, I've had for a while, it makes the job a lot easier. Replaced a lot tore up doors sometimes.

Good idea. I've replaced mine too many times now. The bushings are shit. This will be my tomorrow project. I probably would have cut the bolt length in the past, but I'm going for function and I doubt anyone but myself will even notice. Mine has got back to the point that if it rains I get water leaking in again, and at higher speeds it sounds like a box fan on high in my left ear. Another great GM design as usual...
@jawkneebebad5 жыл бұрын
thank you . I could have cut a bit off of the threads too but felt the same way lol. I used the longer bolts so that all the thread cleared the metal of the hinge and won't grind the hinge out after time

I went to a you pull it wrecking yard and took the pins and bushings out of the rear doors of a four door, and used them on the front doors. It has been about three years and still working well. Also I keep them greased with a good grease that I put on with an acid brush fairly regularly.

Just my .02 but I would purchase the bushings and retaining rings from dealer or equivalent and re use the pins if possible. The aftermarket bushings are junk! Remove the door and tap in new bushings with a non metallic hammer. I have done both sides of both trucks of mine and doors have been nearly factory tight for a year now. I do hit them generously once a month or so with wd40. Just my .02 if anyone wants to keep it original.
@jawkneebebad4 жыл бұрын
Exactly , if the new/used bushings will fit snug there's no reason to mess with it . my doors just wouldn't accept new bushings
@waleeworld4 жыл бұрын
Good idea. My front drive egg shapped the doors hinge it self. My old man keeps telling me f the OEM pins!

How's the striker holding up? They usually end up getting ripped out, if the hinges are bad long enough.
@jawkneebebad5 жыл бұрын
luckily the striker was still in great shape . the door used to hit it when the pins were loose but now the door shuts tight with the ease of a finger

Yeh gm has bad bushings but least there not like Ford f150 the new ones has two door latch recalls 17n03 and 18n03 one is for doors not opening and other is freezing door that wont open and they suck when ur the man who has to fix the recalls
@thomastobius37763 жыл бұрын
Why'd you go with SS? I'd think that carbon steel, being harder, would be less likely to wear out.

A simple shot of lube once in the last 2 years , have never adjusted them or needed to
@Youtubecensoredmyusername4 жыл бұрын
I’m guessing the thinner contact area of the bare door hinge vs the bushing will chew up the bolt and oval all that out again. Best bet is to lube it often good luck with that one
@jawkneebebad4 жыл бұрын
So far so good . I used stainless steel bolts and washers , lube them every few months . Door has never needed adjustment and the original cause was ovaled hinges too
@Youtubecensoredmyusername4 жыл бұрын
I see. I will try that when my new bushings wear out. Thanks for the video

johnny bebad well my new bushings are spinning where they should be gripping. Lasted maybe a month damn those waddled out holes. Time for stainless bolts SMH
@jawkneebebad4 жыл бұрын
Yep as stated mine were ovaled enough that new bushing would fall out , or last a short time and crack. I could have taken the time to reweld the holes and try again , but after doing this mod I don't regret my choice . Some oil once in a while and they've never sagged since

I am just curious as to how this is holding up? I just bought a 2003 Chevy S-10 extended cab, and the Drivers side door hinges are bad. The pass. side seems to be ok. I also have a 2001 Chevy blazer extreme. The hinges on it seem to be ok for now, however if the bolts hold up better, I think I might just do the mod anyways. Thanks.
@jawkneebebad5 жыл бұрын
so far no issues with it at all . Did it to my 05 and the wife's 02 Blazer. I'd just recommend spraying the hinges once in a while to make sure the bolts don't wear the metal

No problems since the mod . A light spray with lithium grease once every couple months and that's it . Door is beaten and dented from offroading and still shuts and opens like new
