Anyone who was running towards the danger was a hero that day. Firefighters, police officers and civilians rose to the challenge and selflessly helped others. I often wonder how many stories of heroism have never been told because the person to tell it is no longer with us. Office workers who perished because they didn’t want to leave an injured stranger alone in a burning building, or people who couldn’t get out, not because they weren’t fast/capable enough themselves, but because the person they were carrying down flights of stairs was handicapped or elderly. It’s terrible, but also inspiring. I hope they all got their just rewards in the afterlife, and I hope their families find peace in their selfless sacrifice.

Two i remember immediately: Abraham Zelmanowitz, who worked for Empire blue Shield on the 27th floor of the North Tower, died with his co-worker, Ed Beyea, who was a quadriplegic and couldn’t evacuate via the stairs. By Abraham’s sister-in-law, he encouraged Ed’s aide, Irma, to leave. He then called his family around 9:30am to say he was waiting to evacuate with Ed. They died when the North Tower Collapsed. Harry Ramos, who stayed with Victor Wald, as witnessed by Harry’s co-worker, Hong Zhu. Harry and Victor also died in the collapse of the North Tower.

Burn alive or Leap... IMO they didn't commit suicide, they were murdered along with all the others we lost that tragic day.

was conceived in late July 1968 weeks before tower 1 began it's journey skyward and was born 3 months after tower 2 started going up and grew up with them, It was 1976 and i was 7 yrs old and off school sick and was watching a documentary on the construction and my mind was blown when i saw them on the screen. Also i'm autistic and led a lonely childhood and even tho i had a younger estranged brother and sister, i considered the towers my brother and sister and it was my dream to go by the time i'm 30. I turned 30 in 1999 and wasn't financially stable enough to go, so i made a promise to go in 3 to 5 years, and 2 years later i watched them collapse, i couldn't believe it and my heart sank because no matter how rich or successful i become i'll never ever stand on the top of the world and that makes me so sad.

This is well done. I know how much time and research this took as I’ve watched and listened to all of the footage and the FDNY dispatch many times. I’ve paused, run clips in slo-mo, and looked up lists of FDNY on 9/11 to try to connect the dots. I learned about Pfeifer and Jonas years ago, and the crews who were with them. Watched the documentaries about them and the ones about the rescue teams too. There is also Tim who had been FDNY but was now with the Mayor’s emergency services with “the stupid green helmet they made us wear” who that day lost dozens of friends. I’ve learned *a lot* but you have photos I’ve not seen, and linked them through the dispatch tape. Remarkable. What does become clear when you dig is that many of the voices that did survive had the worst survivors guilt compounded by a deep sense that they hadn’t done their jobs as well as those who died. They saw the most horrific s-t but in many cases they “kept on trucking” because the fear was that seeking help-especially FDNY offered-would have them found unfit to work and away from their firehouses. Plus 9/11 illnesses and fighting for basic supports.
