I REALLY like the concept of the carbine/pistol pairing. You only need one caliber and matching magazines for both weapons. It's not only efficient but easy on your ammo cache.

I always figured if the police and the military thought a 9mm pistol was good enough for personal defence then a 9mm carbine should be more than enough for personal home defence.
@rbrtck6 жыл бұрын
+Snadzies More than enough? I doubt it. The reason a pistol is considered "enough" is that it is as much gun as cops can conveniently carry on their hips without scaring everyone and/or escalating a situation with a shotgun or rifle in their hands. And for soldiers, it's all they'd care to carry as a backup weapon--a second rifle would be too heavy and bulky. For fighting they'd all much rather use their long guns, but if a pistol is all they have (cops being separated from their vehicles, or soldiers running out of rifle ammo or having a rifle they've used hard malfunction), then they'll resort to using it. A home defense situation is different, unless you happen to carry a pistol on your hip all the time (some people do) and are caught outside your home. If in the more likely scenario you are alerted/awakened by the sound of a forced entry into your home, you should use as much gun as you can, just like the police and military would (given a choice), and for most people that would mean a shotgun or rifle/carbine (using centerfire rifle-caliber ammunition) with a reasonable barrel length for maneuverability. I'm not saying that there aren't legitimate reasons for preferring pistols (e.g. maximum maneuverability) or pistol-caliber carbines (maximum controllability and much less blast), but the trade-off is significantly less effectiveness per shot. It may be barely "enough" but it's not nearly as good as the other common options in this respect. Unless we're talking about howitzers or nukes, you can't have more than enough gun--there are just barely enough and full-fledged enough. ;) One center-of-mass hit from a 12-gauge shotgun loaded with #4 buckshot will put the target down, period. You can't say that about pistol-caliber weapons, which require more accurate (or lucky) shot placement and probably multiple shots per target. Choose whichever option suits you and your situation the best overall, but keep in mind the difference in power and per-shot effectiveness, for which pistol-caliber weapons are only barely enough, not more than enough.

There are many reasons that 9mm was chosen as standard NATO pistol round. It was, as these things are, as much a political and cost/benefit analysis as effective tiveness! The 7.62 over 5.56, is a case in note. M14 v FN FAL is another. I used a 9mm SMG in service. Hated being outgunned by proper rifles! To use such weapons effectively each and every time needs training and continual practice!

To me a good reason to go with an integrally suppressed 9MM like this one is to keep your hearing. 5.56's tend to be very loud and shooting them indoors will likely result in permanent hearing damage without hearing protection.

@dr.doofenshmirtz9501 Just me shooting an AR carbine under a tin roof overhang at my outdoor range with just foam plugs in ears in resulted in 3 days of hearing loss. I use muffs now but I can't even imagine discharging an AR in the house without hearing protection. I bought my 18 yr old son an AR pistol upper for Christmas this year and figured it could be a fun range toy for him but also double for home defense in a pinch. It has a flash can that supposedly sends the blast further downrange. I haven't shot a 9mm ar pistol yet but assume it would be leaps and bounds less detrimental to one's hearing indoors. So I'm one who actually does consider the sonic blast in the house factor, ha ha. As well as over-penetration into the neighbors' houses.

Just in my opinion, a 9mm carbine at home defense distance is pretty ideal. A lot more accurate then a handgun, especially with adrenaline going, and more rounds on tap. We all own ARs... We all know shooting that thing off in the middle of the night half awake indoors is going to disorient you. Between the noise and the flash, it's not going to be as easy to get clean follow up shots. Being deaf and half blind with ghost images in a tactical situation isn't exactly ideal, especially in the likely situation there's more then one threat. A 9mm carbine you can pretty much shoot without ear protection and not blow your eardrums, there's next to no flash, and it's easier to control. And let's be honest at these distances, with decent ammo, something like +p 147gr HST out of a carbine will ruin someone's day just as quick as .223. Even more so since you probably can place it more accurately. Just my opinion. 9mm carbine is a good balance of power and control, both are important in that situation. Bonus, ammo is dirt cheap to practice with.

What I personally would really like to see is several different popular defense rounds in 9mm and how the performance varies between a sub compact pistol, full size pistol, and carbine. Speer Gold Dot, Federal HST, Liberty Civil Defense, Winchester PDX, and others. Do they work as desired in sub compacts, if so does the increase in velocity of a carbine cause them to expand to much? How much velocity is lost out of the smaller guns and do those rounds still expand at the slower velocity? Things like this that will help us choose an ammo based on the barrel length of the firearm we plan on defending ourselves with.

Not only is there BB gun levels of recoil the action is louder then the explosion from firing the round. Only problem so far is there isn't enough gas to cycle the gun so have to manually charge it after every shot. I'm looking at a lighter buff/buffer spring to get this puppy back to semi status. I also might need to get a 10 inch barrel with a pistol length gas port also, trying to avoid that if possible.

When you're shooting at 100 yards or less in a personal defensive manner or in a home...the extra velocity isn't necessary. For home defense I have my choice, depending on where I am: highpoint jhp, hipoint 4595, sub2000, or ar pistol in .300 blackout. All are apartment friendly to an extent, I won't be shooting through 5-6 apartments like my .308 would. All are budget arms, though if the sub2000 got taken in for evidence it might take another 2 years to find one. The hog was under $200, the 4595 under $300, the sub2000 and ar under $500 each. Bill Nye is a mechanical engineer who invented a hydraulic resonance suppressor for 747s and spent countless years educating the public on scientific matters. He's done more important things in one week than your dead ass has done in its entire existence. Climate change doesn't give a fuck if you "believe" or not, snowflake. But by all means, keep whining about climate change, liberals, Starbucks, the "fake news media" and whatever bullshit conservatives get their panties in a twist over these days. When you're baking to death when it's 106 outside in April a few years down the road, don't cry about Bill Nye. Peace.

I have a question about gel tests. Most people aren’t 15” thick so that means it will exit the bad guy. How fast and how far will it go after?
@noraye2500 Жыл бұрын
ballistic gel isn't, and never has been, a simulation of the human body it is merely a homogenous medium for which to test bullets against each other The whole "12-18 inches in gel" thing that the FBI talk about is based on a variety of variables, one of which is a comparison that bullets in gel travel vs in pig carcasses. If a bullet goes X distance in a pig, and the same bullet goes X distance in gel, then you can gestimate a reasonable distance in gel as a standard for where you want the bullets to be (different bullets will do different things when they enter a target) Another factor is that while yes, the human torso is nowhere near 18 inches deep on average, that's assuming a straight on distance from the chest to back. But that maybe not always be the shot you're able to take on a potential badguy, sometimes it has to be a side shot. We're thicker sideways than we are front to back, plus to factor in that we have arms in the way of the chest at that point, etc So the 12-18 in gel standard that the FBI kinda agreed on is assuming the bullet has to travel the furthest possible distance to reach it's intended point of impact (center mass, heart/lungs/etc) and that the bullet might have to travel through several layers of clothes, and potentially other body parts, like the arms.
@juansaavedra38217 жыл бұрын
Set up jelleten targets, shoot from different distences and check the penetration of the shoots, maybe try various ammunition for fun see the difference in penetration. Try out handguns to SBRs, different semi auto Rifles as well.

Out of a carbine, 9mm can reach up to .357 mag ballistics with some loads. That should work. Only thing hangs me up is highly unusual carbine and ammunition. Not typical.
@curtwuollet2912 Жыл бұрын
@@salvationbygracethroughfaithactually I agree, on the pcc and pistol part. Not on the SBR and suppressor fees and whatever the carbine costs. A 16" barrel on a $300 carbine would suffice at self defense ranges.

Not quite sure I understand the concept here: Why build a bulky integrally supressed 9mm carbine (apart from some gunlaws/regulations) that greatly reduces muzzle energy and then shoot light, fast ammo through it thats gonna make a crack anyway. You could just use a regular 10" barrel with a supressor, and shoot heavy subsonic loads with twice the muzzle energy and less noise. Or use some of those light underwood/lehigh/whatever loads with ~2000fps out of a real barrel and more than 500ftlbs if you are going supersonic anyway. Kinda feels like having a V8 engine and putting holes in the cylinder walls leading to some sort of muffler tank, so that in the end you have the same torque as a small block and dubious advantages in noise.
@troy94777 жыл бұрын
The 9mm carbine is a great defense tool- almost no recoil, easy to handle, very little muzzle blast, and a useful velocity gain over a handgun. In Kali the only ones we can have are the Ciradel worked over M1 carbines or used Marlin Camp Carbines if you can find one. My now ex wife was never big on the shotgun, so i put a red dot sight on a Camp 45 as her go-to house gun. Worked great; that gun was always extremely accurate. Nice how u point out the different ammo performance. The CZ Scorpion sure looks like a nice one to me- put on a red dot and a light, good to go. When i get to a free state, that will be one of the first things on my list. Great video.

Great video on rounds. However, any scope for home defense is nuts. You need simple, minimal sights that are useable AT NIGHT, at 3am, when you are half asleep, and firing no more than 30 ft. And you have to instantly acquire your target and fire… no “getting set.”
@RollingRigTraction9 ай бұрын
Looks like the Gauntlet arms stock, definitely going to run mine on one of the 9mm builds I'm putting together (both 16") got a Foxtrot Mike side charger and a Mean Arms ball bearing delayed upper, planning to keep them light and easy handling. 9mm hits a bit like a .357 Magnum from a 6" barrel with a 16" barrel which isn't half bad.

Jared Maynard sometimes you can chamber a 380 and run ONE, round and it will fire. But it will not cycle. You can run it pretty often in 9mm revolvers if you have moonclips. But it's pretty rare that an automatic can chamber it but not impossible
@Jesses0017 жыл бұрын
One thing you did not mention....or I missed it because I am tired, a pistol caliber carbine, even unsupressed will now flash bang you in a small area. the AR in 5.56 has a good flash and bang in a confined hallway. Kind of makes the world fuzzy for a short time.
@insightfulfellow497510 ай бұрын
I am a firm believer that a pistol carbine (pistol caliber rifle) is a good option for self defense. Especially for people who lack the wrist strength to rack a slide on a regular pistol and for people who can’t hand recoil well. Or people not trained properly with hand guns. It is a good option for anyone. Better yet if it is pared with a high capacity shotgun.
