Of course, we as teenagers when this song came out in the early eighties assumed it was about something sexual, but then we had our illusions corrected when we read interviews with him. Still, I know that's how most people still think of the song.

It’s about record companies screwing over artists. The companies stroke your ego so you don’t look as close as you should at the contract. Some of the lines are how they bleed artists dry and some lines are advice to “keep your contributions by your side” and “keep your eye on top” of what the record company is doing.

And yet almost none of his official hits have more than 10 mil views here on KZbin, and even less on other platforms. That's criminal for such a huge talent like Billy. The guy knew how to make the most catchy songs ever in the early 80s, but seems to have been forgotten over the decades. He got lost in the shuffle during the 80s revival recently. Once you hear Billy Squire, you can't help but love the music.

Funny story... In the late 80's early 90's, I was a competitive bodybuilder. As part of your routine, each competitor needed to do a posing routine accompanied by music of your choice. This song kills in concert. I was fortunate to see him live once. It was a crowd of only about 3 to 4,000 but the participation was energetic from beginning to end. He finished with Everybody Wants You. A fantastic 45 minutes. I 💕 the final lyric - You say you're a winner but man you're just a sinner. That is a classic rock slap in the face to the criticism by critics. Love it when vocalists use brutal honesty.

Fun fact: at 2:55 in this song (the march section with the snare drum; it’s at 5:10 in this video and continues after the commentary break), you can hear “The Song of the Volga Boatmen,” a traditional Russian work tune first published in the 19th Century & inspired by barge haulers on the Volga River in Russia, in the background, played by what sounds like orchestra strings but is more likely a keyboard synthesizer programmed to sound like a string section.

Glad you found Billy Squier. He was huge in the early 80s. More great songs: My Kinda Lover In The Dark Learn How To Live Emotions In Motion She's A Runner All Night Long Rock Me Tonite (video ruined his career) The Big Beat (one of the most influential and sampled songs in early hip-hop)

Saw Billy Squier back in the day when they opened up for Foreigner. It was amazing. He brought a group of people up on the stage for the "Stroke" party. Super fun!

Bobby Chouinard is the drummer. He was a kick ass drummer, for sure!!! I love his sound. He spent the Eighties working with Billy Squier, Ted Nugent, Peter Wolf, Cher, and drummed on Alice Cooper’s 1989 hit album, Trash; Chouinard’s raw energy and pure attack led Alice Cooper to call him one of the best musicians he ever worked with. Sadly, Chouinard passed away in 1997 at age 44 of a massive heart attack, leaving behind a wonderful legacy, countless fans that will never forget him and a pure love for the drums. RIP Bobby. 🙏❤🥁

This is arguably Billy's most popular song. I saw him in concert about 20 years ago, and could not wait for him to play this song. When he did "The Stroke" he did it like a ballad with an odd reggae backing music. You could have heard a pin drop in the crowd, and there were even a lot of boos when he finished. He and Ted Nugent were opening for Kiss. I'm not a big Nugent fan, but the guy puts on a fantastic show. He saved the night for me. I think Billy let a lot of people down, and Kiss put on the worst show that I have ever seen. They were atrocious.

Billy Squire was semi underrated. He had a lot of great songs but like RUSH fought against the corporate music industry which demanded formula based songs. Check out Squire's ~Rock me tonight. Pat Travers ~ Boom Boom Out goes the lights Golden Earing ~Radar Love Molly Hackett ~ Flirtin' With Disaster Toto~ hold the line

My favorite song of his and the first one I’d heard from him, this song had a big impact on me back in the day! To see a different side of him he also had a reeeally nice rock ballad called “Nobody Knows,” I’d highly recommend that one!

He let other people do the guitar for the video, but this guy is a KILLER on guitar. That is where he excelled as a young man. He kills guitar plus vocals.

Billy is still performing and has performed with Ringo Starr's All Starr Band and Ringo allows those in his band to play their own songs during the concerts. That drum sound was made by reversing the sound of the snare drum and sounds INCRDIBLE!
