🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation: 00:25 🌍 The Israel-Palestine conflict is causing immense suffering and pain, and addressing trauma and preventing its intergenerational transmission is crucial. 02:18 🇭🇺 Gabor Maté shares his personal history with the Holocaust and growing up in Hungary during a time of anti-Semitism. 12:46 🤔 Traumatic memory can trigger emotional reactions from past events, and it's important to understand how past and present traumas are interconnected. 17:27 🌏 Many people lack a comprehensive understanding of historical events, especially those involving indigenous populations, and the need for curiosity and inquiry in examining complex issues. 19:42 🤯 Understanding the perspectives of both sides in conflicts, like Israel and Palestine, and conducting unbiased research is crucial to addressing the complexity of the situation. 23:08 🇮🇱 The Israel-Palestine conflict is viewed differently from various perspectives, and it's important to acknowledge the historical context and emotional connection to the events. 26:07 🤔 Identification with a group can lead to a victim mentality, making it easier to see oneself as a victim. 31:12 🤝 Understanding and acknowledging our role in conflicts is essential for promoting peace. 44:01 🧘 Emotions like hate, anger, and grief are normal, but we should aim not to be governed by them in our actions. 46:05 ✌️ Seeking victory as a response to trauma can lead to cycles of violence and suffering for generations. 50:11 🗣️ The prophetic tradition in Judaism involves speaking truth to power and appealing to higher values beyond self-interest. 52:55 📚 Accessing historical records and evidence can help people form a more informed understanding of complex issues like the Israel-Palestine conflict. 01:19:37 🌍 Gabor Maté discusses the situation in Gaza and highlights that it is often referred to as the world's largest concentration camp, as stated by an Israeli sociologist. 01:20:03 🇨🇦 Gabor Maté talks about his experience working with Palestinian women who have suffered trauma as a result of torture in Israeli jails, emphasizing that the trauma they face is ongoing. 01:21:29 🇮🇱 Many Israelis are unaware of the reality in the occupied territories, and there's a lack of awareness about the daily life and experiences of Palestinians under occupation. 01:22:50 🇮🇱 Incidents of violence against Palestinians often go unreported in the media, and the suffering of Palestinian children tends to be overlooked, creating a significant awareness gap. 01:26:14 🇮🇱 Criticizing Israel is sometimes equated with anti-Semitism, which can deter non-Jews from discussing the Israel-Palestine conflict and engaging in meaningful dialogue. 01:29:15 🌍 Anti-Semitism is an irrational ideology that is not based on facts but rather driven by hatred. Actions by Jews don't create anti-Semitism, which is a form of ideological and psychological illness. 01:31:17 🇮🇱 People's perspectives tend to narrow under pressure and fear, leading to a defensive and fear-based mindset. This can hinder constructive dialogue and understanding. 01:41:11 🌍 Ordinary people on both sides are encouraged to have empathy, attempt to understand the other's perspective, and be open to examining their role in the relationship to contribute to a more peaceful coexistence. 01:45:35 🌍 Dr. Gabor Maté emphasizes the importance of recognizing our interconnectedness and oneness with all during the day of atonement. This perspective encourages understanding and empathy for others. 01:47:46 📜 The Old Testament contains both conflicting elements, advocating genocide and promoting not oppressing the stranger. Dr. Maté suggests that people should find ways to be proud of their heritage while not being at odds with others. 01:53:46 💡 Dr. Gabor Maté encourages people to seek consciousness, understand their reactions, and take responsibility for them. He believes in the power of truth and connection to reduce suffering in the world. 01:56:17 🌟 Dr. Maté finds hope in the possibility of individuals and collectives acknowledging and experiencing their own goodness. He emphasizes the importance of communication and understanding in fostering healing and addressing complex issues. Made with HARPA AI

Sending love to Dr Gabor- I'm a Muslim from Bosnia- refugeed as a child 1992 to Austria- and stood all my life against antisemitism and racism in Austria. On so many levels- this hurts. 07.10 I know in both ways: what I protect and therefore love- will be hurt the next time. I wish us all just a peaceful home . And I started my comment not knowing Dr Gabor- would talk about Bosnia. Let's be clear for pacifism- let's search more than ever for intercultural interreligious dialog. The past weeks really hurt.

It's not true. We speak about how horrible it is here in Russia. We're just careful to take any sides. But in my personal view Israel 🇮🇱 was brutal for 80 years. So it is inevitable from Palestinians. I watched the interaction between Palestinians and Jews on the airplane. It was real disgust of the face of one young 🇮🇱 towards the whole family of Palestinians. It's true. Palestinians are very friendly people like all Muslims I dealt through my long life all over the world. I grew up among them in the Urals. So we were always just one solid family to these days still my close friends are all Tatar people here. They are all Muslims.

@@pegapage9603and he didn’t say all Jewish people. He said Israelis. It’s probably not all Israelis. It is MANY Jewish people around the world, particularly American Jews. More Canadian Jews seem to be willing to look at the whole context and history and know there is so much pain on both sides and to want peace for everyone. That said, I was encouraged by the Jewish Americans who shut down Grand Central Station.

Thank you my friend. My friend was murdered by Hamas. I do not agree with Dr. Mate’s assessment unfortunately, we know there is Nazi-level antisemtism from Hamas, Hezbollah and others, often funded my the Iranian regime while they terrorize your people too and the Palestinians too and don’t fund economic development or education for the people but rather, weapons and control. It is very crazy extreme religious ideaology. The intifada was very violent this hurt me to hear Dr. Mate say it was not. I know people who died, kids blown up in bombs in buses. I wish Woman Life Freedom, Freedom for the people of Iran, Israel, Palestine, the 2 states; world peace and democracy, no more terrorism or tyranny anymore. God bless.

My sister was born in June 1944, I was born December 1945 in Budapest to Jewish parents. We only left Hungary in the 1956 revolution, so our parents endured the madness of fascism and communism. After that the challenges of being migrants, in wonderful Australia. Our lives , our children’s lives have been affected by the traumas Gabor so eloquently expresses. It’s amazing he is able to continue to work relentlessly even after such a horrendous event as that on 7th October ( on Jewish people) and subsequent horrendous events on both the Palestinians and Jews . I admire him very much and of course he has to keep educating but humans ,it seems cannot learn from history

This interview, “A Call For Healing” has truly been profoundly beautiful and deeply healing to me. I’m Jewish and also one who has found it important and vital to see and let go of numerous identities. This has offered much expansion and liberation and a sense of evolution toward my highest good and the highest good of all. It’s been wonderful to experience much more of Gabor Mate who I love and admire and now to add precious, sensitive and wise, Soren Gordhamer, for admiration and interest. Yes, disillusionment can be wonderfully expanding for truth-seekers, since we’re willing to go through the pain to get there. Deep Thanks! ❤

Something else that stands out to me in this, was the talk about the residential schools for native children and that when a child spoke their native tongue a pin was stuck in their tongue to discourage them from speaking their native tongues. Women had cages put on their heads with spikes in their mouths to prevent womyn from speaking up. These atrocities are the same. Yes, we need to address the natives oppression and do things to help them heal. We also need to do this for our female population; one half of the world, that seems to always take a back seat. If we do rise up, the backlash or the lack of adding them to discussions like this, happens. The layers of patriarchy power "over", programmed and passed down, is so damaging. Reaching to have these discussions is so deeply important. This AND that.

Thank you Soren and Gabor for such an authentic and powerful discussion. The chaos of the world reflective of the state of consciousness of the participants. Love the conversation about possible healing and a way through being a deeper understanding of that which gets in our way (most often ourselves, both individually and collectively). It always reminds me of a favorite Rumi quote, "Your task is not to seek for love, but merely to seek and find all the barriers within yourself that you have built against it.” I have heard multiple sources for this quote, but Rumi seems to be the one found most often. I share Gabor's sentiment, people are innately good, and it requires a passionate inner journey of self-discovery (and pain along the way) to find our way back to wholeness. Here's to possibility. Thank you again Gabor and Soren.

Yes. At the same time my friend there IS a lot of hate against Jewish people and 33% of young people 18-24 recently polled support Hamas, not Palestinians, Hamas who is oppressing Palestinian people as well as Israelis and anyone in their way…that is scary. Governments of Russia, Iran and China DO have the ancient hatred of Jews and spread massive disinformation wanting to cause problems in the west, it is a huge danger on Tik Tok especially and other social media, for example even Gabor said himself there is no genocide, and words matter. I know Jewish peace activists who have been attacked and posters of missing children hostage ripped down, for being Jews, so Gabor kind of sold people out I am sorry to say, sure he means well and I respect his compassion, yet anyone not realizing there IS antisemtism in the movement critical of Israel is blind. Anyone minimizing Israeli pain and the attacks on Jews including many who would agree with many of Gabor’s views politically, is doing a disservice in the worst times for Jewish people globally since the Holocaust, the most dead, synagogues burned, rabbis homes attacked, university students beaten up after class, and babies hostage. Of course people can be critical and not hateful towards Israeli policy -👌great - to ignore the hate and bias is blind and irresponsible as I know kids getting death threats. Also the intifada involved huge amounts of suicide bombings and knifings, people should never ever say they support intifada or will be met with huge fear and trauma response, I lost my friend to it as a child. And I criticize Netanyahu all the time. Just need to be really really sensitive and call out the anti-Israel hate when it really is hate. And when it’s not - let people speak. God bless

Dr Mate changed my life. I learned my trauma began IN the womb. Born with colic and jaundice, I was also incubated. I came into this world NEEDY and screaming. The LAST thing a 17 year old child could handle and our avoidance attachment syndrome began. She was violent, emotionally and verbally abusive and just doesn’t have a nurturing bone in her body. This is such a compassionate insightful discussion. Reaching to see ALL sides is so important. Feeling what we feel and then reaching to not act on it, but reflect and gather insight, is so important. Reaching for compassion and understanding. Interesting that we teach girls this from when they are little, to not act out, or hit etc. Have compassion and understanding. Mother's have been teaching this for generations and yet it is rare we quote women/mothers. We have had to wait for a man reaching to find a new way for men to heal from man's teachings, then to share it -and other men who have reached to learn from that man, to quote it.

So much history unravelled, such wisdom, so raw and provoking. So grateful for this dialogue, I am almost 3/4’s away and just felt the need to comment as I am so appreciative of what we are learning about the suffering of so many groups of people in the past too and interestingly enough at a time there’s more suffering and Dr Gabor asking us to inquire / learn about the past history of peoples suffering so that we don’t repeat the mistakes of our ancestors again. It is a time of great pain but also a time we are so privileged to learn if we are willing to hear both sides of any story so that we can validate, understand, support the people in their suffering without disregard for the deep pain. I feel like I need to sit with a notebook with this dialogue n take notes of such wisdom from this talk n the many more we are so privileged to listen due to the advancement of technology - one that all humanity can be proud of where men / women has made progress to learn, to know, ti educate - etc and to sometimes watch some joyful moments in a documentary or in a movie or transcend oneself digitally to another country virtually. Anyways … may we see the war stop and a way forward whereby both parties can come to agree that life is so precious and time is ticking fast. Love to all!

Hurt people hurt others, yet healed people heal others; they show the way from their own experiences and healing journey!🙏🏻 There is a distortion that creates this illusion of separateness. The distortion between masculine energies and feminine energies creates this disease. Whereas if the balance between masculine and feminine was maintained, governments would spend more on health, education, art, agriculture, create more forests, and more beauty because these are feminine energy aspects. It creates more compassion, you know, if it were true democracy the would be more humane actions. Instead of bombing people, with so expensive mass destructive guns, they would send the same amount of money, to uplift them. Feminine says “Do not bomb; just feed and nurture with compassion, so there would be no enemy, only friends”. We can win hearts with kindness, but we create more darkness with toxic actions. We need to remember we are all human beings, we all need love, affection, appreciation, and compassion!💫🙏🏻

Hearing every word you say once and many times, it is more than a life lesson and if we could just understand and take action the peaceful way… starting with the people around us and the ones we “love” so we can begin to really LOVE ourselves and “the other” as ONE. Consciousness is difficult but possible! Cooperation is possible! Peace is too. Thank you so much for your humble and wise interventions. ❤️

The Anne Frank quote at the end 😭 it’s true and we have to believe it to make it happen. The study of Love is the Study of Life. I’m so grateful for Gabor 💜 So much love for humanity in his heart~ we’ve got to get bold and loud and soft and brave about Love, learning more every day… don’t let it be minimized… it’s the real solution to everything … what’s wrong is just the absence of it

Thank you... it IS the grand sacrifice--to willingly give up what you "know to be true" in sacrifice for arriving at the truth. Harmony is PEACE--the willingness to give up a bit of what we want so everyone can have what they need.

I'm grateful to be disillusioned as well, even though it hurts. I was triggered today hearing a conversation in a locker room that I couldn't help but hear. Talking about collateral damage as a way to justify the killing. I got so angry I slammed the locker door. All I could see in my head as they talked was the image of the boy lying on ground with a blown off leg, his head still moving. I could not believe their talk of collateral damage and I wanted to tell them: "you don't know the history". After calming down, I realized, neither do I and who am I to judge, I don't know them. May we open our hearts and minds to healing our trauma, and the heart of this world. Peace to all souls.

Thank you, listening to you in real time (sort of) as you try and articulate your own evolving feelings and the complexities of the Israel/Palestine tragedy is so helpful. Your openness, your expression of fallibility and your searching for how you can most sincerely respond to the situation are deeply affecting. I hope more and more people find it in them to patiently listen and excavate what facts exist. The world does not conform to a sound bite culture. Rather, it demands attention, presence and profound, multi-faceted human(e) intelligence. Thank you again and I hope this receives as many views as it urgently deserves.

Here is where I don't agree with Gabor Mate, unfortunately, I don't think that they Jews are being killed for being Jews, I think they were killed because of the humiliation that Palestinians have endured, and that it has nothing to do with religion. In addition, the land did not belong to Jewish ancestors in biblical times either. The only reason Jews believe its their homeland is because they wrote it in the bible, whereas other tribes living there did not. Jews/Israelis like to ignore the fact that there were other peoples living there, as though those others didn't count or are/were enemies, always hiding behind the guise of a long history of prosecution, with the Holocaust as its pinnacle. Israelis, backed by US and other countries, are playing out their own little revenge game, but it's not even a revenge game, it's the deep desire to show how strong and powerful they are. It is absolutely horrifying that they can do this and call themselves a civilized democracy and that they can't see what they're doing....and I could go on and on, like Gabor says. I am a formerly brainwashed Israeli who has had her eyes wide opened following the worst massacre of Israelis in Israel's history. I went from a moment of grief upon hearing the horrific acts to complete rage, but not against the "enemy", against "my people". Does that make any sense at all? Just like Gabor says, I am experiencing a total identity crisis. I am so ashamed that it took me this long. אני מקווה שישראלים יפקחו את העיניים חזק ויתחילו להבין מה קורה במדינה שלהם ומה הם יכולים לעשות. זה דורש אומץ, אבל זה לא בלתי אפשרי. PS I don't think you should feel sorry for Israelis. There is nothing tender there. They are just brainwashed by militant-style mentality that is not all that different than that of Hamas.

In the last month I've learned a lot about the history of the conflict. In fact I also watched the Israeli historians that Dr Gabor Mate recommends. What I've learned is summarised so eloquently by Anna Baltzer in her talk "The Danger of Neutrality" Neutrality is not a catalyst for mediation or change. It is the exact opposite because it maintains the power imbalance exactly the same, leaving the scales tipped in favor of those with power. And by Martin Luther King - The ultimate tragedy is not the oppression and cruelty by the bad people but the silence over that, by the good people. Palestinian people are so powerless because the oppression against them has been going on for so long that they can barely breathe. So staying neutral in the face of this means being complicit. We have to educate ourselves and to speak up because Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere and all the rights we've acquired were through public pressure. Together we're powerful! ❤

Mossab is one of the most courageous people I've seen. But his opinions are clearly different from Gabor. As a son of Hamas leader, who (like Gabor) investigated the conflict, he changed his mind and now very pro Israeli. His take about the reason for the conflicts roots in radical islam and the fact that Palestinian leadership has always been madeof radical terrorists.

I have followed Gabor for years on trauma as it has bee. Helping me heal from my childhood. I agree with his understanding of the conflicts history, and applaud his honesty and integrity. I am just sad this week, because I am finding myself separating from my Jewish friends on the conflict. They won't listen to me try and explain anything, and are convinced they already have the facts right, and continue to support every action Israel is doing including bombing hospitals as "the right to defend itself". I'm sad that my friends who normally value all human life, can't see the truth in this conflict, and they go "oh well, blame Hamas for the 10k dead in Gaza". It breaks my heart. There was a girl shown on video who is being taken in by another family, because one single air strike from the IDF took out her entire family at once, making this 5 or 6 yearold an orphan immediatly. It just breaks my heart. How can you ever, and I mean ever, justify suffering and death? I can't.

I am feeling this so much. I feel like I have lost all my Israeli friends in one day. Friends who are not only aware of trauma but some of them are therapists and teaching about trauma. How is it possible to teach about trauma and support a military action that kills thousands of innocent people believing that this will bring peace and security for Israel?

All of you pretty people judging from afar... what did you feel after 9/11 which was less than a third in magnitude for what we're going through now in Israel. It was easy for you to go after ISIS because it wasn't on your soil! You weren't threatened a bit as we're here in Israel. I feel so sorry for the innocent civilians who are being killed, but blaming everything on Israel is not only unfair, uneducated, and stupid. It's VERY DANGEROUS!!! Get some facts right first, and not from anti-zionists! I acknowledge Dr. Gabor Mate's authority as a physician and a trauma specialist, but his view of the conflict is very one sided, and he's rewriting history as he think it was. Listen to some other people. How about listening to the son of one of the highest ranking Hamas leaders? Or a Greek researcher that held the same views and has changed his opinions after he did some research about the history of the conflict?

Why are so few people remembering the healing powers of meditating on transforming with peace, love, joy. Emoto proved to the world the power of meditation for cleansing poisons and toxins from a toxic lake. Why are people not being active in practising these powerful healings to the world and life practices??? Why do people need to listen to talks like this but do so little to change our world. I had a very full time job and life when I started to meditate. Within 6 months of twice daily 20 minute meditations, my life changed. I soon left a very well paying job so that corrupt people no longer paid my wages and I could change as my heart so needed. People do not pay attention to real and effective ways to change self and our world. Why? Why? Why?
