A Day Out Shopping with the Kids ║ Mills Family Christmas │ Large Family Vlog

Today the kids and I are going shopping for books (for the kids who earned membership in our "book club" during the fall term), presents for their Christmas gift exchange and new ornaments (plus a few things I wanted to pick up myself!) We end the day with supper at the mall and some time playing in the mall park. On the way home we had a minor incident that resulted in some damage to the van (and a chat with a stranger on the side of the road, which isn't shown!)

He is either upset over something or really loves what the family is doing so much,he wants to do it over and over. Like drawing names & wrapping the kid's gifts to one another. Good morning from the UK this Christmas morning! I'm the first up in my house, so time for some tea before the kids wake for stockings and presents. Andrea I am so pleased you all got home safely. I thought it was ice on the road at first. Your trusty van took some damage though, but it got you all home in one piece!! You are an amazing mom. I wish I had the patience that you must have. The kids are so well behaved and polite. The fact that you homeschool and have time to do your hobbies is mind blowing. I only have 4 kids, which one lives with his father, but my other three are under three, so I'm kept pretty busy chasing two toddlers and pumping for a newborn. Your family is truely blessed.

You are definitely in the toughest phase! My first 3 children came fast (3 kids 3 and under like you) and I felt overwhelmed many times. My last 3 were close, too, (3 kids 3 and under again) but it was a lot easier because I had systems in place, I had older helpers and I was just plain used to the level of work and the lack of "me" time. It gets easier!

Im so inspired by your videos. What a great mum you are. Just a question... Do your kids ever argue? They don't seem to at all. What do you think your secret is to them getting on so well? I can see you are very patient and always tell them what is expected of them before going into shops etc... I guess that's a big part of it. We're actually in Wyoming about 45 miles from the South Dakota, but SD is like our 2nd home state since we go there for so many things. It's still fun to be sort of neighbors!

We just like long hair and think it's pretty. We can always change our minds and cut it short, but it's much harder to change our mind and grow it long once it's been cut short. Well, not harder, but much slower!

How far do you have to drive to get to stores for your regular errands like Walmart?

We have Walmart and some other stores about 30 miles away from us. There's not a lot of traffic and with 80 mph speed limits it doesn't take long to get there. Right here in our town we have a small grocery store where I do weekly shopping. I try to go to Walmart only once a month for the time saving of not spending an afternoon out when I have lots to do. It's also saved a lot of money even though I still get everything on my list. We have a Dollar Tree in the same town as Walmart which is where I usually take the kids, but our bookstore closed down so we had to go to Rapid City for that (plus Hobby Lobby!) anyway so we went to Dollar Tree there.

Andrea Mills we are moving to a rural area, it does have two grocery stores and off named dollars store but the nearest Walmart is 45 miles away. Currently I can go to hundreds of stores within 45 miles so that's going to be a bit different. But there will be less traffic so it won't take as long to get there.

I've always lived here, so I can't really compare it to anything else. What I can say is that it seems like when we visit California there is so much so "close" but everything is such an ordeal to get to. One of Tom's friends was really surprised when we told him that we never have to factor in traffic when we estimate how long it will take to get somewhere. Plus, with on-line shopping there's nothing that isn't accessible if we need it.

We live in a small rural town (population 1,008.) That's our closest mall and Hobby Lobby. There's a Dollar Tree 30 miles from us, but the book store in that town closed down. That's what tipped us in favor of making the trip to Rapid City.

Whoever yells shotgun first. They started that on their own. If two kids tie, one gets it on the way and one gets it on the way back. Thomas prefers to sit in the back, so usually it's just a game between Asher and Judah. Really, there's as much argument sometimes about who gets to sit by Claudia as there is about who gets the front seat. They like playing with her during the drive.

The kids have lots of friends from the neighborhood, the library, other homeschool families, kids they meet at the park or when they go to community events or Friday night magic. There are a lot of places to make friends! I'm thankful they aren't trapped into thinking that the only people they can befriend are kids in their same grade. Some of my closest friends are much older than I am; in the real world age is irrelevant.

I gave money to Solomon, Sophia and Claudia, but the other kids used their own money. (That's why we shop at Dollar Tree so it's not a burden for any of them.)

Andrea Mills You have some great kids. Andrea,if more people would do that with their kids, they would soon learn the back breaking value of a dollar. When it's their own money, they seem to hold it tighter.(In general,not meaning your children) Plus,I feel you're teaching them how to budget and manage things. Lucky kids.

They earn money for chores; depending on their age and ability they earn anywhere from $2-$15 a week. We also pay Thomas, or oldest, to help us in our home business so he earns quite a bit more than the other kids (about $50/week.)
