I like the asymmetry of the mirror image. It's like the old Medusa was using the mirror to look into the past, and the young Medusa noticed something in her time line and went to the mirror to see her future self checking in on her.

My heart hurts for you Slew, because I know that struggle.. every time I paint… I hope what I am about to say doesn’t come out wrong… it is almost refreshing to see such an awesome artist struggle with the same things I as a mediocre artist struggle with. However you persevere and I stay in that struggle and eventually come up with another idea and give up on the other one completely. I have bunch of half finished paintings all over the place… lol

9:58 Thank you, Slew, for showing us a very vulnerable and real side of what the artistic process tends to entail. I feel that far too many art content creators skip over and/or omit entirely. For newer artists who are still learning with the goal of getting to that higher level of creating, it is vital that they (myself included as I've been self-teaching for 4 1/2 years) understand that even the best of us struggle at times, make mistakes, rush, and/or forget rules that one might have established for themselves as a key part of their process. I really appreciate my, my dude.

This painting is absolutely beautiful Slew! I'm a disabled voice actor from the UK & just wanted to offer my services if you wanted an audio book/audio drama version of your story. I'm not asking for any money, just wanted to contribute to help Slew Studios as I think it's a wonderful cause. Art has helped me through so much, I wanted to help others access Slew Studios. I hope you have an amazing time at your gallery event! 💜

Congratulations! Such a big project and very nice result. I'd like to post a comment to give you ideas on what to experiment with on your next big project. Hopefully they give new insights: 1. Contrast: What a lot of people get wrong about what your eyes are led to, is that it is not light. It is contrast. So the area / thing with highest contrast should be the what you want people to focus on. Going away from that area, reduce the amount of contrast in a vignette sort of way. It depends... But working with knowledge of contrast and what it does makes huge amounts of difference. Because you can paint in the same light/dark without contrast, filling in the zones of no or less importance and it will be ok. 2. I don’t use solvent like gamsol anywhere anymore. I might clean my palette with straightforward thinner. I clean my brushes with plain bar soap. It’s much healthier. Don’t spend your life standing in the evaporated air of solvents, even if you don’t smell it, it’s not healthy. If you do insist on solvents, always use jars sealed with lids that you use once when you do the actual cleaning. But paper towels to clean off paint and bar soap go a very far way if you don’t leave your brushes to dry. 3. Painting along the longitudinal: I did this myself for several years. I see you did at 10:16 mainly. The thing is that when painting this way, you do not in the same way consider changes along the longitudinal, so there is a tendency to "overextend" light or shadow, and then it breaks up the gradual transition that exists along the longitudinal. Basically saying: when painting legs, do not follow the legs, but do this in the opposite direction along calves, knees, etc.. That way it recognizes more detail along the legs, like little shadows under the knee, as well as chromatic differences that may exist. 4. For the hair, I saw you use loaded, perfect brushes and the extend them all the way along. Probably in reality, due to fall of light, it IS really light where it starts, but it's not the same amount of light already half way. (same as 2). I paint my hair now by recognizing the general volumes of hair and getting those colors right, then I can paint on top to do the details, but with a very old, cut-up brush. 5. Gamut: I've noticed that when you start on a new area, you reload your palette with completely new colors. This likely upsets color harmony. I'm sure you made a choice of color palette (the colors you like to use), but to make them work together, you have to use them together. The use of colors together is your gamut, which describes a specific area of colors your colors are expected to fall in. And that is different from the extremes of the colors your colors could be. To be able to describe green in shadow going from that shadowy green to a yellow, you need to have a believable transition that is only formed by understanding the colors produced by the lights that fall on them. 6. "core" color: In line with 5, it may help to find a "core" color for a painting and build everything around that core color, even the most extreme colors you find. That way, it's all connected and establishes a harmonious whole. 7. At 11:20 you're doing a good job of experimenting to reduce the size of the head, but in a very fast way. If you'd applied a less intrusive glaze for example, there would have been an opportunity to create a more ambiguous transition between background and foreground, even if it'd be very subtle, like hairs becoming lost in the background. It's very easy to make the head too small that way too. You work with very strong edges a lot of the time, but in reality, edges may look strong, but might be less strong than you perceive them to be. Which means that maybe a strong gradual transition towards the background on the top of the head might have done what you wanted to. Because the light you perceive bounces forward, not backwards, when the angle of the turned away part of the head is facing the other way. Working with a tighter gamut teaches that. (you can get an extreme tighter gamut working with a reduced palette like zorn, but that's a choice). 8. 13:28: massive leaps of progress there. I totally love it. You glazed across to bring this back to a common area ( 5/6 ) and then went back in there. Love 15:22 as well. 9. Warm/cold. Similar to using value to turn the form, we shoudl also introduce warmth/cold into the turning of the form, because it adds to the realism. A cold light should create warm shadows and a warm light cold shadows. 10. My palette: I use french ultramarine, payne grey, blue black, raw umber, burnt umber, red umber (red holland), cadmium red, yellow ochre pale (py42), flake white, titanium white. From there I discover my gamut and try to paint stuff the same way. Sometimes I add another color (green for nature/leaves), and then expand on that gamut. 11. I'd like to suggest an experiment. Buy blue black (winsor newton), buy red cadmium, flake white and titanium white. (or have it). Mix blue black with red cadmium to become a purple that looks like it's inbetween. Add some flake white. This is a great purple to use as a "midtone" between where you have the more red toned face, where it becomes more umbery/yellowy. What I like to do is take that as the "core" color of a portrait and design the rest around it. The end result is not a purply mess, but purple is quite neutral in terms of color and it depends on what you favor most: yellow/red/brown/umber/blue. THe idea is to start from a very neutral color and work towards what you're most favoring, but then you can go back to what is neutral, go the other way (yellow maybe), make it red, make it blue, make it grey, etc...

It is such an amazing piece. I wish it was on my wall hahaha! Hearing your processes and even your struggles, is actually incredibly inspirational. We all struggle and do things again and I think for those of us who are less experienced than you, it can hurt our confidence somewhat. Yet seeing you have those same struggles and saying it's ok to start parts again, it's helpful for all of us watching. I will do what you do sometimes, and go a little faster than I need to. I think it's honestly because I'm just in a zone, but slowing down is definitely the key to perfection. I noticed the hands were misaligned, but I never cared. I understood what you were doing with it, so it made sense to me.

Great work! Would be very interesting to see you paint something like this from scratch with no photo reference. I personally think that a lot of the colors are a little too bright in this painting which makes it look a little cartoony (nothing wrong with that if that’s the style you aim for). I also would suggest you to thin your paints and glaze over some of the areas that need more depth. Over all I really enreally enjoy watching your videos and it’s great to see your progress!

There was a point in the painting when the reflection looked very nice, and as you were wanting her younger, I think at that point you were closer than the final result. But that is me looking from my artistic eye, not yours. The one thing all us artists struggle with is that we want it the way we want it, and nothing can change our minds. I really wish I could get out of that mindset at times. The finished piece is stunning, especially for the size. The one question I have is about the varnishing process. Do you think just a couple of days dry time is enough to go ahead with the varnish process, or would it be better to wait longer? I have my own system of how I do it, but I just wanted your thoughts as well. I hope your show was a success, as I too was at a show, and did ok, but could have been better. The conditions for the show were excellent, but the buying power of the people was a bit lax. Best to you for your future endeavors! ❤❤
