You didn't mention my most hated aspect of this film. The dreams in all the other films were tailored to the characters' own fears, in the remake everyone just goes to the boiler room. No imagination. No creativity.

Tbf, it’s much closer to Wes’s vision. In the original and even in New Nightmare (and Freddy vs Jason) where it’s more grounded in reality, characters always entered in his boiler room instead of a world made for them. And we the audience aren’t sure if it’s a dream or not. (It’s still unimaginative but I get what they were going for.)

What REALLY made me upset was how Quentin temporarily believes Freddy is sympathetic and his death is *presented* as sympathetic while his vile actions are downplayed or hidden in subtext. He even has a moment where he goes, “Look at what you did *to* me…” like he’s the victim. The original Freddy KNEW he was evil and loved it. The new Freddy seems to think he was innocent in his actions and his death was unfair.

This frustrates me as well. Because I feel if they had at least kept the alternate ending where Nancy is finally able to take ownership of her own story and turn it around on Freddy when she says to him "Look at what you did to ME!" the movie could have held some value. Roony Mara's acting is actually on point in the alternate ending and you can see her emotionally grappling with what happened to her in that moment and letting it fuel her anger. For the first time she is allowing herself to challenge Freddy's narrative in earnest and its palpable in Mara's performance. For me its the single best emotional moment in the remake and if it had made it into the theatrical cut; I think that the remake would've seen a resurgence of some kind, or at least new appreciation for it's depictions of abuse trauma in the alternate cut. The scene just before the alternate ending is also strong as Freddy, like many real life abusers, is convinced Nancy was complicit in her own abuse and that he was the true victim, and is monolougeing all of this to a terrified Nancy that is can't yet find the words to challenge Freddy's beliefs. Its sickening realistic and possibly some of the best writing in the whole film. It's mind boggling that the alternate ending was cut when it literally is the only other redeeming sequence of the film other than the micro naps sequence.
@Stigmatix666

@@Stigmatix666 this is definitely true but for something that came off as its own interpretation (for better or for worse) I feel like the normal guy aspect to Freddy in the context of the remake was appropriate. Quentin is the real final boy in that movie. He is the real hero, not Nancy. Without him she would have had no chance to survive against Freddy without him doing bad things to her before killing her. He stole the adrenaline that woke her up and he was the one almost fully beating Freddy up with the paper cutter. @brandonspain12345
@brandonspain12345 5 ай бұрын
I figured out why his makeup is so bad, and that’s because his design is too accurate to the original, so his makeup looking so unrecognizable ruins the purpose of resembling Freddy. If you’re gonna make his outfit look the same, then leave the makeup alone. If you’re gonna change his makeup, then change his fashion to match the makeup. There’s so many ways you could reimagine Freddy Krueger. Take the basic description of a burnt man wearing a striped sweater and a fedora and wears a bladed glove and make it your own original design. It would’ve helped Jackie Earle Haley stand out as his own Freddy Krueger. Hell, Wes Craven got to re-imagined Freddy and his look in New Nightmare with a different look and origin. But even then, you’d still recognize him as Freddy. Hell, there’s even A.I. generated Freddy pictures that could’ve made a creative and original Freddy redesign. But nope, much like the movie itself, it doesn’t bother do it’s own thing and instead has to rely on the past for nostalgia sake.

So sad no one sees his character's heroic actions because all focus on Nancy as the heroine (even though she actually did nothing other than running while Quentin looked for a way to wake her up and then later cutting Freddy's throat after Quentin almost defeated Freddy on his own). If they had made a sequel focusing fully on Quentin and Freddy (like what we got through their lore in DBD) with a good plot and other good characters I would have been happy. They should have focused more on Quentin in the first place instead of Nancy.

The 1980s did remakes well, respected the source and upgraded the effects. Take the greats like The Blob, The Thing and The Fly, Little Shop of Horrors for example. Remakes and reboots today though... ugh... unnesessary retcons, "modernizing", ticking check boxes, bait and switching, unwanted social commentary prioritized over plot, overuse of CGI and the hiring of inexperienced writers and film makers that rely on nostalgia and a brand recognition in the hopes the fanbase will "eat it up". Except, luckily, more and more people are wising up to the carrot on the stick trick the hollywigs have been dangling.

The simple answer is that the 80's remakes are REAL remakes. They took the concept of the originals and remade them in a new concept, a new light and made them relevant to modern audiences. The 2000's remakes were just lazy carbon copies of the originals with nothing to add at all, just music and hot actors of the time, which made them pretty lazy and dated, when the originals are atemporal.

What killed the remake was this: Freddy was not played by Robert Englund. To Nightmare fans he is Freddy and no substitute will ever do. The remake did do something interesting with playing with the possibility Freddy might be innocent which was a nice little idea before finding out he wasn’t. Other than that…most of the kills and Freddy wise cracks are watered down and just didn’t work and the movie fell flat.

I am surprised this video didn't mention Samuel Bayer. I remember reading interviews as the reamke was being filmed and he basically out right said he didnt want to do this film and had previously turned down other platinum dune movies prior and after initially turning this movie down, the producers made it clear this was the final offer they would give him. Not only that but Bayer even said he wasnt a fan of the Elm Street movies. So in short we basically had a director who got forced to direct a movie of a series he wasn't even a fan of. I'll say Jackie Earl Hayley's comments regarding the original make sense. I remember when he was talking about why he accepted the role of the remake he always said things like "its such a iconic role" or "famous franchise" which if you read between the lines basically amounts to "I'll get a good paycheck and possibly steady work for the next few years". Never once did jackie say he took the role because the script was good. Equally calling the original nightmare on Elm Street the worst movie he has ever seen is rich- I guess it cant compare to the greatness of Jackie's cinematic work like Dollman, The Dark Tower, the RoboCop and Dark shadows Remake, and Semi Pro. In short this remake was fucked from day one because half the people involved didn't want to do it or were basically in it for a quick paycheck and dunes clearly just wanted to make a quick profit off this series after they had ran through Texas chainsaw massacre and Friday the 13th. Also idk how true this is, but rumors going around at the time were that Samuel Bayer clashed big time with the producers because of their constant interference and mandates. Again idk how true it was but if that is the case, the movie just was never going to catch a break.

And then it smacks us right back into reality by revealing that every horrible thing about him was TRUE reminding us that it’s Freddy Krueger we’re talking about so why would we have thought other wise? THIS remake was one where I actually had some expectation that they could go somewhere interesting- there's always going to be some creative way that people's dreams can be depicted onscreen. I thought with the newer technology available at the time, or some new ideas, they could create some really eerie, surreal setpieces. But no- the CGI was a disaster. Creepy scenes created practically in the original film were redone and made way worse in the remake. It didn't really do anything new or creative. I remember the thing i hated is even for just a min they tried to make you think freddie was innocent which really annoyed me. The original fully understood and leaned into the fact that freddie was a monster and he knew it.

Sorry no! The worst remake was Child’s Play! 🤷🏻‍♂️

How does everyone hate this movie? This has been the only movie where freddy actually looks and acts like a frightening murderous pedo without relying on joking around so much.Yeah the dreams aren't tailored to each personal dreamer but that's because this version of freddy isn't fucking around when it comes to killing. It's more serious which should've been better to everyone but apparently everyone likes it better when freddy is a joke character that kills

The idea that people disliked this movie because they made Freddy a pedo is weird to me because I always thought that's what he was.

I hated this remake because it solely does injustice to the original movies simply by existing.

I just dislike it because this Freddy is boring and they don't even do anything to make him scary with the fact he's a pedo

I sat through about 30 Minutes of this film, then walked out. The Cinema crew looked at me and knew. They let me go see another film instead

I'm shocked there are still some people who defend this trash fire. I actually think they could revive the series with a new actor as Freddy, but only if it takes place within the continuity of the other movies and with a really good horror actor like Richard Brake as Freddy, someone like James Wan directing, and a good makeup artist.
