Tbf, it’s much closer to Wes’s vision. In the original and even in New Nightmare (and Freddy vs Jason) where it’s more grounded in reality, characters always entered in his boiler room instead of a world made for them. What REALLY made me upset was how Quentin temporarily believes Freddy is sympathetic and his death is *presented* as sympathetic while his vile actions are downplayed or hidden in subtext. He even has a moment where he goes, “Look at what you did *to* me…” like he’s the victim. The original Freddy KNEW he was evil and loved it. This frustrates me as well. Because I feel if they had at least kept the alternate ending where Nancy is finally able to take ownership of her own story and turn it around on Freddy when she says to him "Look at what you did to ME!" the movie could have held some value. Roony Mara's acting is actually on point in the alternate ending and you can see her emotionally grappling with what happened to her in that moment and letting it fuel her anger. For the first time she is allowing herself to challenge Freddy's narrative in earnest and its palpable in Mara's performance. For me its the single best emotional moment in the remake and if it had made it into the theatrical cut; I think that the remake would've seen a resurgence of some kind, or at least new appreciation for it's depictions of abuse trauma in the alternate cut. The scene just before the alternate ending is also strong as Freddy, like many real life abusers, is convinced Nancy was complicit in her own abuse and that he was the true victim, and is monolougeing all of this to a terrified Nancy that is can't yet find the words to challenge Freddy's beliefs. Its sickening realistic and possibly some of the best writing in the whole film. It's mind boggling that the alternate ending was cut when it literally is the only other redeeming sequence of the film other than the micro naps sequence.
@Stigmatix6665 ай бұрын

@brandonspain123455 ай бұрын
I figured out why his makeup is so bad, and that’s because his design is too accurate to the original, so his makeup looking so unrecognizable ruins the purpose of resembling Freddy. If you’re gonna make his outfit look the same, then leave the makeup alone. If you’re gonna change his makeup, then change his fashion to match the makeup. There’s so many ways you could reimagine Freddy Krueger. Take the basic description of a burnt man wearing a striped sweater and a fedora and wears a bladed glove and make it your own original design. It would’ve helped Jackie Earle Haley stand out as his own Freddy Krueger. Hell, Wes Craven got to re-imagined Freddy and his look in New Nightmare with a different look and origin. But even then, you’d still recognize him as Freddy. Hell, there’s even A.I. generated Freddy pictures that could’ve made a creative and original Freddy redesign. But nope, much like the movie itself, it doesn’t bother do it’s own thing and instead has to rely on the past for nostalgia sake.

The 1980s did remakes well, respected the source and upgraded the effects. Take the greats like The Blob, The Thing and The Fly, Little Shop of Horrors for example. Remakes and reboots today though... ugh... unnesessary retcons, "modernizing", ticking check boxes, bait and switching, unwanted social commentary prioritized over plot, overuse of CGI and the hiring of inexperienced writers and film makers that rely on nostalgia and a brand recognition in the hopes the fanbase will "eat it up". Except, luckily, more and more people are wising up to the carrot on the stick trick the hollywigs have been dangling.

The simple answer is that the 80's remakes are REAL remakes. They took the concept of the originals and remade them in a new concept, a new light and made them relevant to modern audiences. The 2000's remakes were just lazy carbon copies of the originals with nothing to add at all, just music and hot actors of the time, which made them pretty lazy and dated, when the originals are atemporal.

I remember when he was talking about why he accepted the role of the remake he always said things like "its such a iconic role" or "famous franchise" which if you read between the lines basically amounts to "I'll get a good paycheck and possibly steady work for the next few years". Never once did jackie say he took the role because the script was good. Equally calling the original nightmare on Elm Street the worst movie he has ever seen is rich- I guess it cant compare to the greatness of Jackie's cinematic work like Dollman, The Dark Tower, the RoboCop and Dark shadows Remake, and Semi Pro. In short this remake was fucked from day one because half the people involved didn't want to do it or were basically in it for a quick paycheck and dunes clearly just wanted to make a quick profit off this series after they had ran through Texas chainsaw massacre and Friday the 13th. Also idk how true this is, but rumors going around at the time were that Samuel Bayer clashed big time with the producers because of their constant interference and mandates. Again idk how true it was but if that is the case, the movie just was never going to catch a break.

I had high hopes for this. Jackie Earl Haley did a fine job as Freddy Kruger. Robert Englund vouched for him. Some of the nightmare sequences and micro naps were good. If only they went ahead with Freddy being innocent and getting revenge because he was killed as unjustly.
@pedrosantossinger5 ай бұрын
That was the downfall of the remake. Making Freddy innocent would be a triumph, making him a vengeful spirit and not a dream demon. That would completely change the game and make us kinda root for him. But no, they had to go the disgusting pedo route and make us wanna forget this crappy movie.

Freddy was never a good person Why in the Remake would he magically turn into an innocent person who never did anything wrong? Then he wouldn't be Freddy Krueger haha. I think the Dopest thing about this movie was that it was the first and only Nightmare on Elm street movie to psyche us out if even for a little while by making us think that all the other movies had it wrong and that Freddy Krueger actually WASN’T a pedo and a child killer and that the parents of elm street had the wrong guy and burned an INNOCENT man to death which is why he came back for revenge. And then it smacks us right back into reality by revealing that every horrible thing about him was TRUE reminding us that it’s Freddy Krueger we’re talking about so why would we have thought other wise? They really need to take their time and get this one right in every aspect before bringing forth a new version/entry. This franchise is the one which should not be screwed up and given the proper vision/scope/story the franchise and the audience deserve. Now, cast David Dastmalchian and get the script worked out pronto folks at New Line Cinema.

The "micro-naps" concept is already present in the original movie (but without the need to verbally explain that, it was implied in the concept of "going crazy" by days and days of sleep deprivation) and that's what happens to Nancy while Glenn is killed and Freddy calls her on the phone ("I'm your boyfriend now, Nancy...").

THIS remake was one where I actually had some expectation that they could go somewhere interesting- there's always going to be some creative way that people's dreams can be depicted onscreen. I thought with the newer technology available at the time, or some new ideas, they could create some really eerie, surreal setpieces. But no- the CGI was a disaster. Creepy scenes created practically in the original film were redone and made way worse in the remake. It didn't really do anything new or creative. JEH was almost robotic- he delivered every line like he'd been heavily sedated.

Jackie Earle Haley is the best (maybe only) good thing about the remake. I like that, instead of trying to copy Englund, he portrayed Freddie as angry and resentful. Also to note- they weakened the motivation of the mob of parents. In the original, they had the evidence & knew, without doubt, that Freddy was a child murderer. Released on a technicality. So, similar to the Sonic the Hedgehog reaction/fix, they had him re-record all of his dialog to sound more "menacing." kzbin.info/www/bejne/kKa8oHiqeq6SndEsi=WeDk1vXCdpow3O9L&t=106
