I absolutely loved the movie and I appreciated the gender roles, that were - by the way - questioned by the children, as you pointed out. The family was a wonderful example of healthy masculinity and femininity portrayed by the parents and I cant remember when I saw a couple working TOGETHER, appreciating each others skills, depicted in a better way. And both genders were depicted incredibly strong. The women didn't have to "pretend to be a man" to be as strong as her counterpart.

I would argue even if you don't appreciate some aspects of the film (one scene in particular was almost unforgivable for me, you know the one I mean) The acting was solid, the script was well done and the movie was phenomenally directed - Fede Alvarez showed true craft in that film

Hi. Grace this just reminded me to tell you something. Ages ago you gave me advice when I had written a rough screenplay for a horror movie I wanted to make. Well I have adapted it into a novel and it's going really well so far. It's not a usual type of horror. It's more like a straight up drama with horror elements. But let me just tell you that you helped me get to the point I'm on. Thanks.

A Quiet Place - a solid horror flick that is almost guaranteed to be ruined by loud and obnoxious audience members. I just went to a 10:35pm screening on a Thursday night knowing that only 25% of the theater was filled and I still had THOSE people who comment and yell at the screen. Considering how quiet this film is, it's going to be nearly impossible to avoid this from happening and it's frustrating because I can see this potentially really affecting people's viewing experience. I almost would recommend just waiting until you can watch this at home ONLY because you'll save yourself the frustration of having to listen to people talk in your theater.

I haven't made a comment on your channel but thought I'd let you know I've watched your channel for some time now and find your frankness refreshing. Other channels can be a bit of a shill when spinning their movie reviews and sometimes giving a biased opinion but you seem to shoot straight. Just a suggestion: I like your cliff notes on the left margin but it would be helpful if you can highlight the topic you are discussing as you are going through your review (like the cajilion powerpoints I've had to give over the years). That way if I have to come back to your episode I can tell where you are at. Thank much.

You just convinced me to see this Grace. I'm gonna be broke because of you, and I gladly thank you for it. I don't think the movie "Blockers" even stands a remote chance against a great horror like this. BTW, I haven't seen you react to the new "Upgrade" trailer. I know your not into thrasher type movies, but the cinematography is amazing along with the story. The red band is the one to see. Edit: I think they only spent 5 million on this movie, and that seems way too low for the quality.

Regardless of your opinion on gender roles in modern society, in a survival situation they are relevant. It was far more important for the daughter to stick with her pregnant mother than it was for the son. In time, of course they could reverse it and have the son stay back and the daughter catch fish, but the priority is definitely for the girl to learn about motherhood/parenting first. Not just because she has the ability to get pregnant and have a child of her own, but also because she's going to have built in maternal instincts too and would be a bigger help for her baby brother.

question: A Quiet Place keeps getting talked about as a movie about a deaf family. Do you think this is a good thing for deaf/hard of hearing representation in Hollywood?
@hughbrown59316 жыл бұрын
Hi Grace thanks for your great non spoiler review. Interestingly it sounds remarkably similar to the The Silence by Tim Lebbon which is also about blind creatures that hunt by sound and lay waste to Europe before arriving in the UK. That story focuses on a deaf girl and her family and they try to find a remote haven where they can sit out the plague and there is no guarantee it will ever end or what kind of world will be left. It's a great book and I would definitely recommend it. I had hoped this book would be made into film and this films almost sounds like the sequel to it. Good to know you recommend the film
@codygreenly65416 жыл бұрын
so do you think LOBO will be good?
@letterbox2036 жыл бұрын
Grace, I don't think the roles each child was assigned were necessarily divided by gender. For example, the daughter was prevented from going to capture fish at the river because her dad was still upset with her for the loss of the other family member. He seemed to hold her responsible.

Everyone peers silently to see who has that "guilty look" and naturally somebody's gonna laugh! "It's Game Over, Man!" Roll credits. I was in fear for the characters the entire second half and even tho the first half seemed slow as you say in the review, there is a reason for it. Amazing performences from everyone. Movie viewed yesterday for the first time via streaming on the smartphone. Was in a city park island where I missed the ferry and was waiting for the next one and played the movie with headphones on to kill time. By the time the action was really starting the Ferry came and watched the rest later at home in bed. Not that scary though but great acting and cinematography.
