The dead mall aesthetic is so dark and freewheeling. There is a nearly empty mall in my area that only has a few stores left. Walking through it is so eerie and calm with the occasional surprise of seeing another person. I'll have to listen to this album the next time I go.
@treesurgeon24412 жыл бұрын
Make some music play it at the empty mall and bam you've a stew going.

Just curious, are they winding down the mall for redevelopment, or is it just dead? There have been any number of malls which wound down their tenants before redevelopment, as some tenants have longer leases than others.

I'm beginning to appreciate the amount of effort this guy puts into describing a sound without just playing you the track.

Pad, you're timing with this video is perfect. I just got off an old cruise ship's final sailing before it is retired and cut up for scrap. The ship debuted in 1991 and in many ways was still frozen in that era of the late 80s and early 90s that many of the liminal space dead malls showcase. Virtually every surface was covered in some sort of exotic marble, gold cladding, smoked mirrors or neon lights. There was even an entire bar of neon lights and mirrors called The Neon Bar. During my journey I was accompanied by a few classic vaporwave albums: Vector Graphic's Midnight Love, Phoenix 2772's <earth_地球> and vcr-classique/VHS Jazz's Virtual Metropolis. When you get a chance, pop on one of these albums and look up interior pictures of the Carnival Ecstasy and imagine yourself wandering through the glimmering, vivacious spaces at night as one of the last people to ever see it teeming with life before being run up onto the beach at a scrapyard in Turkey and becoming a dead liminal space awaiting it's demise.

I'm listening Good video. I like how you touch on the fact that everyones "perception" of the music can be different, even though we're all listening to the same track. Everyone enjoys the songs differently, and that's pretty cool!

Love these reviews you do Pad. One thing I love about the vapor wave thing is the way the artists look at concepts we deal with daily but don’t even think about. Like the sounds of empty rooms etc. As I’ve said before, I’m an old man who grew up in the 70/80’s punk scene and I’m now a lo fi blues artist but you’ve shown me a whole new and wonderful musical universe. Thanks bud!

For me, the definitive mallwave album will always be Palm Mall Mars, but I like the unsettling atmosphere of signalwave and dead malls. It goes hand in hand with watching urbex videos here on youtube.

There is an artist by the name of "nowt" and they make music that fits liminal spaces very well, they even have a channel called "nobody" with compilations of their music and much more.

I downloaded this album after watching the video last night. Recently listened through it at work. From start to finish, I could not comprehend how anyone enjoys this album. Other similar genre albums such as Groceries and Palm Mall Mars are fantastic. I don't know what it is about vacant places but nothing on this album stood out nor did it make me feel anything besides annoyed. More power to you for enjoying it, but it's not an artist that I'll revisit anytime soon.

I can’t believe you’ve failed to explicitly mention the most basic fact about this album: That it’s a compilation. You said it compiles songs from all kinds of places and memories, but it’s also literally compiling songs from a bunch of their other previous albums and EPs from the past decade that are each his unique takes on mallsoft as an overall sound. Like how Northwest Plaza is directly from Vacant Places.
