Looking back on my visit to Dick Proenneke's log cabin at Twin Lakes, Alaska. I have been designing my new log cabin and off-grid homestead over the past several weeks, and part of the process is to look back at all of the cabins I have visited as well as breaking down what I like and what I don't like about my own off grid homestead and log buildings.

My husband walked behind me while I watched this video and said wow, where is this? I told him and he was very impressed with the cinematography as was I. I totally understand how you could be emotional while experiencing the beauty of nature. I really appreciate that you share your journey on KZbin so that those of us who will never get to be there in person can still appreciate the natural world in all of it's beauty. Thank you Shawn.

Wow....seeing the bears so happy in their natural state is so beautiful. They are Gods creatures. I mean I know they can be very dangerous but just looking at them waiting for the salmon to come so they can eat was great at that moment they fit in this world. I think why I love these videos is because they take us places we might not ever personally get to go but we can experience a small portion of excitement of it all. Thank you for making them and sharing, I appreciate it.

You answered it Shawn... it's the emotional experience as to why, at least for me. One thing I really enjoy is you document and share these experiences. I spent over a decade flying bush planes, seeing a lot of this type of thing, but never captured enough of it. Thanks for sharing.

It was while watching a Proenneke's Alaska short video that I first saw a suggested video for My Self Reliance. You were a couple logs up on your cabin at the time. Haven't missed a minute of your videos since then and appreciate you sharing them with us. Proenneke...the gift that keeps on giving. Now that I'm over the shock of you moving, I'm looking forward to the new build.

Dick seems to be the mentor that you never had, even long after he is gone. You don’t need to worry about filling his steps, for yours are firmly placed besides them. Legacy is what is remembered of you. You are creating a legacy simply by doing the things you enjoy. We all wish for you to be around for a long time. One day when I have children they will want to watch your legacy and dream of their own future. Happy 2021 !

This reminds me of my first time fishing with my dad I was 6 years old, it awoke me to life long fascination for the wilderness of BC. The power of this feeling of being wild and free overwhelms me to this day. While hiking up Canim River in Wells Grey Provincial Park I stumbled across an old pioneers cabin the news papers that insulated it dated back to 1893. Shawn I can't imagine the feeling you must of felt being at Dick Proenneke's cabin... awesome video!!!!

I saw Dick Proeneke’s life story on PBS probably 20 years ago and immediately wanted to upturn my life and do it. But with a baby and different life it wasn’t possible. I was stunned by his achievements, positivity and practicality. If he needed a spoon he made it. I’m grateful that you’re living a life I want to but am physically unable to. So will live vicariously through you, Cali and your family. Good luck and Happy New Year 🎆. Stay safe.

Mr P was an inspiration to many. I think that people are drawn to what he did because they long for a simpler life. I believe those of us that try to live that life do so because we want to challenge ourselves and see if we "measure up" to our own expectations. Those that watch us do that on KZbin may do so because you, and me to a lesser extent lol, show them that it can still be done if you are willing to try it. I make my home in Alaska and each time I see it in video I love it even more...thank you for this one!

Wow so spectacular. That's a really awesome story and yes its how I view you Shawn. What your doing at your property is the same things he was doing just in different locations with some different challenges. But the same love for the outdoors and animal life that you have and also the drive for self sustaining life in the bush. He didn't have KZbin like you do to put yourself and what you do out here for all to enjoy in your experiences and accomplishments. Your also a very special man so dont ever sell yourself short my friend. Thank you so much for sharing that with us. .so beautiful and I could feel the emotion of you walking into his old cabin and seeing the dear catching salmon and feeding there cubs. I happy to see It through your videos and your eyes because I will never be able to get to a gorgeous place like that to see it for myself. Thanks Shawn. Be safe and healthy 🙏

The man was, and still is, such an inspiration for his perseverance, craftsmanship, and appreciation of nature. I saw the movie when he was in his 80's and his children were encouraging him to leave and not be alone in remote Alaska. You have the same drive. Fortunately, you have the support of your spouse and girls. Yes, I would appreciate being able to get Chage. I live in Ontario, so hopefully shipping will not be a problem.

Dick Proenneke was amazing. His Alone in the Wilderness was an amazing video. He ultimately died in the Pioneer home for seniors in 2003 in Anchorage, Alaska. He was around 84 or 85 years old. Anchorage is so different from Twin Lakes. I have no idea how Dick managed to live in a big city like Anchorage. I lived in Alaska for 10 years and the bush is so very different fro Juneau or Anchorage.
