In the summer of 2006, I worked on the set of a film noir where real guns were used but no bullets. The gunshots and bullets flying would be added in post. I think in light of what happened on the “Rust” set, using real guns will now be a thing of the past.

they can't paint them they are cosmetic for close up shots so you see the bullet in the barrell. And there NEVER should be live rounds on set. The dummy rounds have beads in them you shake so you can hear them rattle. And know they are fake.

So, shes saying she shook the gun to hear for a rattle to hear if they had real bullets inside. Regardless, even fake rounds are deadly when shot at a short distance. Alec Baldwin is also a huge anti gun nut. The hammer on that revolver falls only when the trigger is pulled unless it was faulty, which has not been acknowledged. It is not a huge leap to assume he pulled the trigger in the actual incident, as actual gun owning actors (even seen in shows and movies) will have finger off trigger. It is a muscle memory.

Especially with footage of the person with finger on trigger just an hour before. It is not reasonable to assume he suddenly developed trigger discipline. Sounds like operator error on his part, but there should have never been a live round in the gun to begin with. The fault lies with the person who loaded the live round, IMO.

Alec should have known that if the trigger is already pulled (which he did) before the hammer is cocked, and the hammer is then cocked, it will automatically fire when releasing the hammer. That's what happened. It matches his testimony and it matches ballistics evidence. Apart from all the obvious gun safety rules already mentioned in comments, as a pistol shooter, I was also taught NEVER to have your finger in/on the trigger until you're absolutely ready to fire. His trigger finger should have been out of the trigger guard and resting along the barrel, they would still have achieved the same result for the cameras. Unintentional of course but Alec must own up to his mistake and accept the consequences.

I think it’s obvious the armorer did not get a good luck at the bullets if her claim there is only one difference between real bullets and dummies is true. Then again, there were not supposed to be real bullets on set. The mystery remains, who supplied the real bullets and why? Regardless of the outcome, I seriously doubt she’ll want to work handling guns again. While I remain angry at the armorer, I will admit watching her stressed out and crying was painful.

The easy answer is she should be guilty of something, maybe guilty of providing someone with a deadly weapon? Or providing someone with a weapon that lead to the death of an innocent life? The real question is how much of the fault is Alec's? Is there a procedure that he neglected to do as someone that is shooting a potentially loaded weapon? Was he supposed to verify all bullets aren't live? Perhaps there needs to be more levels of safety put in place. Where are the lawyers on this one? Lets see a hearing with the armourer removing her from, or placing her of partial guilt. I'm not a lawyer but i can think of a list of issues with this recent "guilty" verdict on Alec's behalf.
