Great interview. Thank you two for conversing about a deeper look at history. Not just the arrogant, propagandistic tale of "we are the greatest".

Slavery was terrible in the USA, and I'm glad it was abolished. But there are many countries today where slavery still exists.

Most of the British Soldiers that burned down the US Capital were in fact from the West Indies, many were free blacks serving in the British Navy Colonial Marines however many died just before the battle of New Orleans a rear frost came up during the night and they died in their sleep, the British forces then replaced them with ex-slaves from the surrounding areas who Fully supported the British war effort.

Gangs of New York is hardly a historically accurate film. It's a fantastical revenge story set in a vague era of history

I think he was basically using it as a visual portrayal of how darker Americans were treated just as horribly, and in many instances much worse, in the North, as opposed to the South, despite what the history tellers would have us believe.

I enjoy reading Horne's books and appreciate his analysis. However, I do maintain that at least for some people, abolitionism was about ending white supremacy. There can be more than one motivation for historical events. In this video, Horne speaks about the end of the Civil War leading to Jim Crown, but neglects to mention Reconstruction - which was the most progressive period in American history... yes, there was a counter-revolution and it was abandoned, but it happened and could have gone in a different direction (too much to outline here). Going forward, we need ta abandon purity politics.
