I’m a senior psychologist. This was powerful. You interviewed him perfectly you can see he needs help and you quickly asked him to talk about his positives. I really hope he finds a great psych and psychiatrist. Brought tears. God bless

Dylan is obviously a very sweet, kind hearted, creative and passionate young man.. He is soo much stronger than he may yet fully realise. Such a massive achievement to have his poetry published by Queensland University. I could imagine him making an awesome Youth Worker.. in addition to his rapping. A massive thank you to Dylan for the pivotal role he played in the Royal Commission. It's not always about the unjust outcome.. It's about the conversations (like this very one) around the investigation, legal process and the injustices and fall out from those things. THAT'S where the real change comes from. Spanian handled this interview with compassion, respect and sensitivity. The fact that Spanian is a diagnosed 'psycopath' is very symbolic of how problematic and systemic our present judicial, mental health and drug and alcohol approach are. Don't give up Dylan because our Country really need people like you. You have all the potential in the world 💖

Great interview. As a mid 40yr old white dude I am embarrassed for my lack of understanding of first national culture. It makes me so unbelievably sad, to hear Dylan talk of first nation run rehab centres as "mad". Experiences like horse riding, camping, access to health care and being surrounded by adults that care should not be reserved for troubled kids. These things, in a first world country like ours, should be fundamental rights. Good on you Anthony for such a great interview. I hope that what you do, sharing your story and allowing others to share your voice, makes a difference for many. Edit... mad respect to Dylan for standing up and carrying on. Dylan, you are smart enough as a man to understand you deserved more as a child massive respect to you.

@@sjalusi1 I gew up in Brisbane in the 80's. Zero education was given to teaching first nations culture. The history my kids learn about FN culture presently at their school is questionable at best. I mention my heritage because it forms huge part of who we all are, and where we have come from. If more resources were given to education at a more formative age , I believe there would not be such a cultural disparity, a greater respect of the awesome culture of FNP and perhaps we could truly start bridging the gaps in cultural separation. I am white. I am fucking proud of Australia's very long first nation heritage. Is there anything wrong with acknowledging this?
@sjalusi1

@@tobybirtwhistle430 Are you as proud of your own heritage as your are of Indigenous peoples heritage/culture? I find it odd that the first thing you mentioned in your comment is being white; I take it as you feel some responsibility for the treatment of First Nations people as a result of your skin colour. How do you feel about other groups who aren’t Aussie and their level of education regarding Indigenous people? I’m my experience Chinese, Islanders and other ethnic groups in Australia don’t give as much of a stuff about it.

@@sjalusi1 I feel a real connection to Australia, I was born here to British parent. I feel no great connection to England. All of my family are Australian. I have quite a few kiwi mates, I'm always on awe how New Zealand's of all ethnicities display such pride in Maori culture. I wonder why there is such a massive disconnect in Australia. Our first nations culture is the oldest surviving culture on earth..... I feel it odd that you have chosen to focus on my ethnicity...? Maybe I shouldn't have mentioned it ..... maybe you would have seen the point I was trying to raise.....?

@@tobybirtwhistle430 Eh it’s not that deep, just shits me when Aussies feel they need to take on responsibility for something they had no hand in. My mob is from Badu Island in Torres’s Strait; I regularly have my Anglo mates walking on egg shells around some topics of conversation. I get they’re trying to be sensitive to the past trauma, but it makes for unpleasant social interactions. Hence why I guess I took your comment the wrong way.

Crazy how you even needed to clear that up. Ofcourse they are like “you and me” they are humans. I know your trying to be kind about it so im just saying this is a general way but this is where the problem stems from. They get excluded from the outside world so they turn to a different life. Trust me 90% of these kids once they can actually think for themselves will tell you they wish they could have a normal life with a normal family. They don’t want that shit in life it’s just all they know and all they’ve been accepted into.
