Hi Kirk - we're doing a smooth float acrylic (dryvit) color coat down in San Jose. We've got some cracking in the brown coat and got some recommendations to do a fiber mesh layer over the entire brown coat. The mesh will be embedded in a dryvit genesis base coat. Is this necessary and will it prevent future cracking in the color coat? If we didn't do the fiber mesh, would the brown coat cracks show through the color coat?
@StuccoPlastering6 жыл бұрын
Good evening Mark Lee, I have never had an issue with Dry-Vit cracking on my prior jobs, as Dry-Vit is one of the best Acrylics on the market. I used it on my own home. One can spend the extra cash to mesh an entire home, as yes it's better, but most folks don't have the extra 15k to spend for this luxury that may not make a difference, except for a better nights sleep. FYI, If you have hydrated the base coat sufficiently and with enough time it should have cured properly thus new cracks should not occur. Best wishes, Mastering Plastering for the beginner’s to the experts

I got some t1-11 siding on my moms house in florida.. There is some cracks and water damage near the bottom and some damage under the window with soggy drywall inside our Florida home where water comes in during heavy wind and rain. I watched a video called "to vent or not to vent" and it shed light onto some interesting ideas about airflow. I did a stucco job once and generally I like to do what I can and pro hire help as a last resort just to save money and learn new things. Does anyone recommend any particular advice for the type of stucco that would be good for me? That looks great. I found a product called "Durock Marble Fine WHITE Base" (I'm in Canada) which is Acrylic stucco. I've been fixing the walls on my super old block wall house with hydraulic cement to fix the big pits, then this stucco over-top. My application isn't as smooth as yours, but my house is old and I just want to protect it, I don't care much about looks. I tried applying it with a roller which sort of works, but the roller doesn't really roll, it mostly "pushes". Mainly I've been using the straight-side of a grout trowel but it's very messy and a lot falls off the wall. The previous owner used some type of paint over the original cement/parging, which is a pain because it's peeling in some places so I have to scrape it off first.
@StuccoPlastering Жыл бұрын
Sounds messy. the product is designed to be troweled on. If your going to try and roll it on use a wool roller of at least an inch and and half nap roller, I don't know if this will work, but it's what I use when applying, "Renew" by Stcuuo-Flex. 👨🏻🔬

you're educational and great entertainment for my nights fighting Insomnia. I have a question for my neighbor. His 1939 house is stucco and some time ago, there was vinyl siding attached to it. I believe that they used concrete nails so the walls are probably toast. But he wants to go back to stucco and I have suggested hardi plank( I can teach and help him to install it and I have the tools). As for finishng his existing stucco, what would you recommend for patching the nail pops and what product to make all of those patches disappear in the final coat? Old school or acrylic? thanks, -BLH

Hello my friend I have shone this in the video a few times, first, add sika-flex caulking to the holes this is an adhesive sealant caulking, horrible for matching textures but no better hole sealer on a stucco wall. Then apply any of the acrylics shown in the description as they are watertight. A house which has had hundred of concrete nails in it needs a good primer and acrylic stucco as its now prone to moister intrusion, these acrylic stuccoes will also hide the nail hole patches too.

I live in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada in a condo complex, 2 story duplex style, with cement stucco chimneys on the roof which the stacks come through. There is no other reason for the chimneys and there are no wood burning fireplaces. The complex is 22 years old and we are having stucco damage because the chimney caps are too small and rainfall or water is draining down the stucco. In some cases it is down to the wires and backing paper. We are contracting out a fellow to replace the caps with larger ones which come further down and slightly wider which hopefully will direct the water onto the roofs. This contractor states that the caps can go on and then any stucco damage below the bottom edge of the caps can be replaced. He also states that the chimneys should be coated with a sealant. I have concerns about not repairing the stucco at least two inches above the bottom of the cap and I am questioning the need for the sealant. We have had no leaks as of yet on our outer walls or our chimneys. I do not believe this contractor will be watering down the repairs or waiting 28 days before sealing them. I personally feel that the money required to do the new caps, repairs and sealant over the next 20 years outweighs the cost of simply taking them down when we redo our roofs in 3 years. Any information you can give me would be greatly appreciated. J Barfett jbarfett@shaw.ca

Hello my friend, have metal falsing caps with all joints soldered, not caulked. Have the metal fabricator go down at least 4 inches. Not the standard 2 inches. No doubt the lather/waterproofer did not go up with their membrane to the cap of these chimneys, so I advise four inches down to accommodate their screwup. You and prime and paint with Stucco-flex or use an acrylic stucco such as stucco-flex, dry-vit, Carsons, or BMI for the longest-lasting acrylic stucco that actually waterproof. As I'm a positive and rated G channel, I won't get into some of the stucco acrylics that I would apply if given to me for free.

What is the difference Synthetic Stucco and EIFS? Or are they the same thing?
@StuccoPlastering Жыл бұрын
Howdy, one is a acrylic stucco finish one is a styrofoam process of finishing stucco. Or so most call it. The terms are interchangeable.💃🏻
@barbarabarrington89243 жыл бұрын
This was very informative. It sounds like they both start with the same base. Is that true. So the scratch coat, etc. is all the same and the only difference is the color coat? And, if that is true then are the small cracks in the color coat of the cementitious stucco an issue? Thank you,
@StuccoPlastering3 жыл бұрын
Good afternoon Barbara, correctomundo. Both start with a traditional stucco basecoat, a two-coat stucco system called the scratch and brown coat. When combined, it's called the basecoat. Whether or not a cementitious or an acrylic stucco is applied, both stucco systems can make still hairline; however, the acrylic stucco is less likely to. All stucco and or concrete can still crack because of thermal reaction, ground settling, vibrations, and or any other means, including heavy traffic driving on the roads. I have done at least 5 videos that cover all the reasons why stucco cracks. FYI, with stucco, the slightest movement and or vibrations can cause hairline cracks. This does not affect the integrity of the waterproofing membrane or the exterior cement plaster. However, it's normal for folk to panic as they have no clue why this happens. It’s simply house movement. Vibrations in stucco walls and or concrete are sort like Kryptonite to Superman, not good.

Howdy Bob Dude, no, the acrylic in this video are only a finish coat specifically designed to be applied to a stucco wall or brown coat. You can however go with an EFIS system, "styrofoam" and just a quarter inch of stucco rather than the solid 1 inch. If it were me I'd use the Dry-Vit plastering system. I got a quote for doing my shop and it was 8K regular stucco vs 9K acrylic. So not that much more. But I'm still wondering about a couple things. Color consistency, color fading, and what about future repairs/patching and lastly is the scratch coat the same in both cases, just the color coat is different?
@StuccoPlastering Жыл бұрын
Howdy Views Dude, you should be wondering if this fella knows what's he's doing. Fact the cost differences is 50 to 60 percent higher for a quality acrylic stucco. If anyone charges a thousand more, they don't really understand the difference in prep and applications. This does not mean they are foolish or stupid, it simply means they are in the learning stage, there's nothing wrong with that stage. FYI, both acrylics and cement stucco last forever if applied properly. The lath, scratch and brown coat are exactly the same.👨🏻🔬
@asusreviews Жыл бұрын
@@StuccoPlastering So you think just $1000 bucks more for Acrylic is too cheap? This is for a shop that has 1325 square feet of surface area to be stucco'ed. Banding on 2 garage doors 1 window and 1 man door. $8400 traditional stucco, $9400 Acrylic. The contractor gave me the address to a new instruction home he just completed it and I briefly inspected it and it looked like nice clean work. He did tell me that he does primer between scratch coat and color coat for Acrylic. I know you went over in your video that the actual Stucco material cost is about 3x higher or more. But thats just part of the materials, as the foam board insulation and lathing costs something too. Labor is most of it I'm sure. He has pictures of large commercial buildings and 20+ unit apartment buildings he's done, so he seems to know what he's doing. This was a couple thousand less than what another contractor quoted.

Howdy old school, I would pressure wash then apply primer no basecoat you already have a base coat, then finish. FYI, you cant install foam over a house that has a stucco finish on. Hello Kirk. I live in Southern California and BMI is not available. Would you please recommend several high-quality acrylic stucco brands that would be similar to BMI. Thank you.

I've used both Merlex and STO Corp. acrylic stucco and have had good results with both. Merlex is in Orange. STO is sold through various distributors i think riverside is where we go pick it up.

Is there a difference in R value?
@StuccoPlastering4 жыл бұрын
Good evening Edward dude. I have no idea about what the R-value is.🤔 I can tell you what the great acrylics products are versus those that I wouldn't use if they gave me the shit for free. However, this is a positive channel, so I only show the great acrylics, Like this BMI, Carsons, Dry-Vit, and or stucco-flex. Sure I left about a couple of other good ones and left out the three brands I wouldn't apply if given to me.🤔 Kirk and Jason Giordano plastering, sharing well over 850 free Stucco/Plastering videos for your education. while this is true, to an extent, the real difference is that you shouldn't be putting in what i would call a "thin coat" of cementitious stucco without being on a rigid backing. frankly, i wouldn't call out the acrylic without a mesh and isolation system unless it was on a rigid backing. by rigid backing i mean a cast in place concrete wall, or maybe CMU with isolation. general good practice is a 2" stucco in a situation with flexible backing. you can try to just use pigmented on the surface, but the application is difficult, as there should not be a cold joint.

too bad you didn't answer the difference between Acrylic Stucco VS Traditional Stucco, Synthetic stucco Vs regular stucco and another term you introduced "cementitious."
@StuccoPlastering4 жыл бұрын
Good morning Skip-bo Dude, excellent question First of all, acrylic stucco and synthetic are the same things, just different words people use. Just like cementitious stucco is a traditional stucco finish that darkens like a brick does when wet. This is what gives the finish coats the ability to last forever.🤔 Note: to all subscribers or anyone who stumbles on our channel with a question, type it into our Stucco/Plastering channel, and like magic, a video will appear to explain how it's done.
