The only thing I can think of that I might have done differently, is to ask him to tell me how I could have helped him to check on the voices, instead of telling him there's simply nothing to check. But that's just trivial and maybe nothing would have changed. This cop did a great job. Three cops standing around and he still managed to stab the officer in the neck!!!??? My brother in law suffered from psychosis and my sister would tell me that he kept saying he could hear the neighbours talking about them when she couldn’t hear anything. He even got into fights with them because of it. I kept telling her to leave him. About six months later I was sharing a hotel room with him at a family function and he started telling me about how he would sit on their garage roof smoking and he could see a lion in the garden and it would stare at him. I literally got up, walked out with my case and went to get my sister. I made her pack and we left together. I told her about the lion and that’s when she told me about him hearing voices and lots of other weird stuff he was doing. He earned a lot of money and would often buy expensive clothes and take them to charity shops and never wear them. He would buy cars and give them away to random strangers. He was also stashing weapons around the house and she even found he was sleeping with a knife under the mattress. He was paranoid about everyone he met. I begged her to leave him and she agreed. Then she broke down and told me he was verbally and physically abusing her all the time. I nearly drove back to the hotel to bury him. Anyway, she divorced him and then people started coming out of the woodwork telling her that he had a serious cocaine problem and that was the root of it all. She started putting all the pieces together and it was so obvious what had been going on but she didn’t have a clue at the time. I still think she would have ended up seriously hurt or worse if she hadn’t left him.

I once had a Roomate develop paranoid schizophrenia during his duration of living with us. It’s a long story, but he eventually tried to burn the house down, became hostile and accused us of sneaking through his things, eavesdropping on his conversations and being in cahoots with the police who were targeting his, so he said. It was a hairy situation and so much more complicated than a comment can do justice for. One thing I know for sure is that these people are impossible to reason with and really do become dangerous. Thankfully, I convinced him his best option as to move out since it’s no fun living with people he can’t trust (us supposedly) and to evade all the people after him. I dodged a bullet with him threatening to call in false reports on me, threatening to do everything he can to ruin my life, ontop of being physically and verbally threatening. I am not a social worker, but I work closely with law enforcement through a program trying to divert folks with mental illness from prison or jail b/c of their mental state. We need a huge overhall of our treatment options for folks experiencing mental health issues. The hospital isn't safe, and neither is jail. ER staff will call officers to take someone to jail when they've been having a psychotic episode and violent, and the jail releases them to the hospital because they are too psychotic for jail staff...and then hospital takes them back to jail because theyre being too violent for the hospital...got to stop that cycle. How? I'm not sure. It'll be a marathon and not a sprint. Police and social workers are ultimately trying to help folks like these and need to support each other. I feel for this officer... he did everything right imo. He is incredibly calm and trying to meet this man where he was at. I often use cigarettes to de-escalate someone or earn their trust. I work security and schizophrenics going through delusional episodes are a common worrying situation i deal with. I've had quite a few hairy moments. Doesn't matter how nice you are to them sometimes. In their head you might be a demon or the devil. They can lose their shit at the drop of a hat despite your best de-escalation and patience.

Yeah the contaminated thinking and detachment from reality leads to volatility and unpredictability for sure.

The sad thing is there's very limited treatment pathways for psychosis. Once someone believes these things they're pretty much set in their ways, it's impossible to reason with them. Living with someone like this is an endless hell.

they need Jesus. and it is the devil and a demon. I dealt with it once in my life and I'm not even schizophrenic but I had a psychotic break and it was all demonic. There no cure in science because Jesus is the only cure. I've never dealt with it again after giving my life over to Jesus and fighting in the spirit

The officer's tone was good, but this man needed to feel that people were on his side. Telling him he was hearing things that weren't there only made him feel isolated and defensive. They didn't have to say they heard them or lie, but don't deny his reality. Those voices were as real to him as the officers' and his mother's voices. Denying that reality, especially while he was still inside the home where he felt unsafe, did nothing to calm him and make him feel safe. I know the police aren't mental health professionals, but they should worked to make him feel safe. The medication and hospital conversations should be secondary. "Let's get some fresh air so you can tell us about what is going on so we can figure out how to deal with this situation. We're here to help you and make sure your home is safe."

It seemed painfully obvious he had something in that hand/pocket the whole time...he was quartering away from him on that side the whole time. And even if you weren't sure he had something there, you damn well better act like he does and not get caught off guard like he does.

Its clear that these Officer's have been trained in Critical Incidents. I have over 22 years experience and your comments are spot on. I also wish Police Officer's didn't have to wear so many hats, but that's the job requirements. There's simply not a group of mental health professionals sitting on the sidelines yelling, "Put me in Coach!" In all my years the county's mental department couldn't get their critical response teams fully staffed. Therefore all but once they weren't available to respond. Or the response time would be like 2 hours. Even when they did respond their communication skills were severely lacking. Good job Officer's! I'm glad you're OK.

As a former emt and 12 years med in other fields as well as EP and Investigations, I always used the 5star/5diamond hotel service approach of de-escalation. .rule 1- never tell them no, rich and/or delusional, always offer options that do not include their original inclinations. Also always assume the worse, whether postictal, narcan-ed, delusional, under influence or evading- always assume they will come out swinging or worse. Hope this helps someone.

Edge of my seat the entire time. The officer trusted him, respected him, and was empathetic. I hope this isn't the incident that makes him raise his walls beyond the threshold of careful kindness and reasonable empathy. They went OVER AND ABOVE the call of duty here man. Wow! Speedy recovery to this man and his team. Physically and emotionally.

My EMT instructor, a Critical Care Paramedic since the early 90s, emphasized saying what the officer said. "I believe you hear them" let's them know the truth but doesn't make them feel stigmatized or anything. That officer is gonna have a CRAZY story with that scar. I hope it looks really cool as a consolation prize.
@danfg721511 ай бұрын
Telling him he's hearing things that aren't real is a waste of time and antagonizes him unnecessarily. People who suffer from paranoia usually can't be convinced otherwise and they'll just figure you're conspiring to fool them and consider you the enemy.

There were several flags that I picked up on from Tyler's body language that both cops should have picked up on in the last few minutes before Tyler struck out. The way he was cutting his eyes back towards the 2nd officer then putting more space between that officer and himself was the biggest flag to me.

"I believe you hear them." So true. Before she passed away, my mother had dementia. Thankfully she still recognized all the people she knew, but sadly she believed there were others lurking around (one in particular living under the house and occasionally coming up through the floor) who didn't always have good intentions. They existed entirely in her head and neither my brother nor I ever tried to lie to her and claim we could see or hear them. We told her that even though we couldn't, they were real to HER and that was all that mattered to us. What truly breaks my heart about this video is mom was 97 when she passed. She'd lived a long, full life. She was ready and willing to move on to the Summerlands and she got to go peacefully in her own bed, in her own room at my home with her children at her side. Tyler will never have any of that and the first linked article says he's only 30. Tragic.

You can't deny the delusions. The patient folds the person denying the delusions into the paranoia and they become imposters and dangerous to the patient. The officers should've separated the son and mom too because she was just agitating him.

DAAAMN! That was a lightning fast strike... I don't think anyone there saw it coming. No wonder his mom was afraid. It's really too bad he did not get help for his mental illness sooner. Glad the officer is okay.

Very sad situation but they should have separated the son and mother, she wasn’t helping the situation at all constantly saying “i don’t feel safe with you here” “ you cant stay here” “you have to go”
@johnhood57811 ай бұрын
This is so tragic. This man truly believes that he is hearing people in his house. The officers denying that they hear the voices kicks in his paranoia. I really don't know what else the officers could have done. This was almost destined to turn violent from the get-go. I'm glad the officer is okay. I really don't think that this man belongs in prison. I wish I knew a good answer. Police, EMS personnel and the ER deal with this everyday.
@jmcorley11 ай бұрын
