Once you know the origin story, the lyrics become even more poignant, and make perfect sense. The original recording by Bread is very similar to this.

A wonderful, but sad tribute to his father who died unexpectedly. We just never know when these things are going to happen. Tell your friends and family, how much you love them, because you may not get another chance. God Bless

This is the exact way it was done on the record. A few small differences because there are no accompanying instruments playing along with him to give it more depth, but it was an acoustic version on the record.

I wonder if David Gates might have gotten the idea from Skeeter Davis’s song The End of the World. I’d heard that song so many times, and always thought it was about someone losing a lover in a romantic relationship. It was a really good song even thinking of it from that perspective. But when years later, I learned she wrote that song about her father dying, It was just crushing. I don’t know how she got through singing it. Just listening to it and trying to sing along I always found myself just choking, and not being able to go on singing. Beautiful but so deeply sad.

Yeah, I don't think I ever knew the real meaning of this song for the first couple of decades I heard it. But the lyrics of the bridge really bring it all to the forefront: "If there's someone you know, you're loving them so, but taking them all for granted... you might lose them one day... and they don't hear the words you want to say..." Whew. I've been grateful for having that time to say what I wanted to say before losing a few people who were very close to me -- because you of course don't always get that. A good reminder to spread the love around while you can, while those you love are still here to hear those words.

As much as I disliked bread, I loved this song by them because it meant something to me as a little kid. But I do think that is a better version than this one but they both get the message across. It's an incredible song. And I love his voice on it. I was a little kid when I heard it so I couldn't possibly have guessed who it was really about, I figured it was probably some woman, but for me I viscerally and emotionally and mentally related it to the death of my great-grandmother, the only one left at that point I had actually known two of them. And she died when I was in 4th grade in this song was popular and just something about it embodied everything. Home life wasn't always that great and the chance to spend some time with her and her really old house that her husband now dead had built her, helping her pick pears from the trees and cut out the worms and get water from the pump. She was so calm and steady and loving but also really kind of fierce in a way. She was born in the late 1800s and came across Kansas in a covered wagon as a 4 year old. So this song is extremely powerful to me.

My GOODNESS. This is NOT the David Gates I came to know as the pop idol of the early 70s, who was safe enough for your daughter’s parents. Not that he’s Johnny Rotten here, but this is a more apt form for this song, with a little more maturity and an almost Townes Van Zandt sort of lonely high desert country feel. I like this a lot better than the original, though that’s good too.
