15 lb newbie over here. I thought it would be easier, but I had to really swing this thing around to get my forearms conditioned for the weight. It's definitely my new favorite training method. So much variety.
@funeralopolis15 жыл бұрын
It's great! Make sure to watch some tutorials on form though before swinging it around to make sure you don't fuck up your shoulders though. 10 and 2's seem to work as well as the 360's, and you don't put your joints in harms way as much doing them in my experience. Your grip and forearm strength will go up considerably. I'd still mix it with barbell work to get bigger, but the Mace is an excellent conditioning tool.

@luffydu881008 жыл бұрын
that's a very good workout ! just one thing : at 3:14 you should rotate your back foot inward by 45° when you hit the tyre. It will reduce tension on the knee and allow a better thoracic rotation and more power. have a good day
@CoachVikingVaughn8 жыл бұрын
Thanks Julien, I tried that originally and felt to much hyper extension in my low back when the mace is right behind my back pivoting/digging the big toe. After keeping my heel down and focusing all my power in the hip hinge it just felt and worked better for me over the 4 month course of practicing all the movements in the workout. When I strike with 2 hands, yes I pivot my rear foot (I do this in my "Onnit Steel Mace Tire Striking Workout").This is not a normal movement for everyone because it first requires great thoracic/shoulder mobility to maintain the axis of the mace.
@luffydu881008 жыл бұрын
I understand, perhaps the way you do the exercice fit well with heay Mace and the other way with a more lighter Mace ^^. By the way, you're execution is good, just working differently than mine ;) I will look at your "Onnit Steel Mace Tire Striking Workout". I just discoverded your channel so didn't see it.

I am interested in getting more into club training but I don't think it will replace my barbell work. What made you give up barbells? By the looks of you, you spent plenty of time under the bar.
@CoachVikingVaughn7 жыл бұрын
I still lift barbells time to time just not as often because honestly they just got boring and they didn't help improve my performance when I was in a fire academy years ago. Also did barbells all throughout high school football as well. There's nothing wrong with barbells, but the way people constantly obsess over progressing volume to the point of injury is what's overrated.
@A1CEvans7 жыл бұрын
Gotcha, did you see any improvements while in fire academy when switching to these types of tools? I agree with you on the barbell progression. I am currently running Starting Strength and feel like I am getting to the point where I need to do something different or I am going to get hurt. These type of tools are looking more appealing by the day, but maybe it is partly fear of having to keep adding weight to the bar.
@CoachVikingVaughn7 жыл бұрын
Yes, a lot. Big reason why I got into TRX and kettlebells. Barbell movements are very linear, so it could add up to some major compression (bulging discs) in the spine in the long run with high volume reps. I view kettlebells as a cousin to barbells, so you can still keep your strength overtime.

If you sand down the black paint off the mace you'll get the steel to show. Then if you know someone good at painting the Triquetra norse symbol you should be set. It's all wood with four main pieces. The main rack he need to get the measurements of the all the steel maces and then carefully cut the U shapes into the main rack (he has a lot of different cutting tools/table saws). I'veI gotten a lot of questions on the rack and might make a video on how he made it.

Coach Vaughn coach, where do you learn these moves?
@CoachVikingVaughn8 жыл бұрын
Lot of my education comes from TRX, DVRT, and StrongFrist past 3-5 years. I'm mainly self taught training with maces, but all the principles I've learned from these organizations can translate to any fitness tool.
@james5757308 жыл бұрын
Coach Vaughn wondering if there's any courses or videos online for teaching how to use this, looks like your chanel has everything I need, if you say your self taught I guess you did the same, thanks for making these videos
@CoachVikingVaughn8 жыл бұрын
Thanks a lot Javid, I only plan to get training from Rik Brown in the future. His videos are also good. Onnit offers a steel mace course, but it's over a grand to register which I think is overpriced and not worth it. If you practice the 360 alone you'll transfer that into different moves easy.

Where can I get a steel mace like the one you're using?
@CoachVikingVaughn7 жыл бұрын
It's custom made, I sanded off the black paint to get the steel to show and then one of my clients painted the triquetra symbol on it. I couldn't find leather wrapping...so I just used brown cloth from Micheal's but you can't tell in the video lol

Awesome Motivating workout Just started using the steel mace and definitely want to incorporate this into my routine
@nickdurie8 жыл бұрын
That almost looks like you're turning it into a weapon, rather than Pahelwani style gada training. Interesting. Beyond looking cool, what are the physical benefits of these movements? I took delivery of a 10kg mace last week. This has been the complex I've been training (facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10153691296971073&set=pb.639061072.-2207520000.1473176831.&type=3&theater), while I've been getting the hang of 10-to-2s. I did plan to move to straight gada 'ladder' style training. Maybe I shouldn't?
@CoachVikingVaughn8 жыл бұрын
The gada is a weapon. It was overloaded for training, then when Ancient Hindu warriors went into battle it felt light to strike faster & harder with a normal weighted weaponed mace. The benefits from what I can tell you after practicing these moves for 4 months is my grip strength is insanely stronger. I can now one arm 360 my Onnit Quad mace no problem now. The moves are based on speed and coordination in ALL planes of motion. More force equals more mass, so the 6kg mace felt heavier while in motion. Beyond grip, my ass was sore for days after finalizing the workout. It's a major leg workout as well. Please know I've been using maces for over a year and came up with this workout for fun wanting to try something different from more of a Norse / Viking stand point. The traditional workouts are great, but got boring for me over time. It's whatever direction you feel is best for you. I have more workouts with the mace that is the style you're doing. I don't recommend this workout until you've tried my other beginner, intermediate, and advanced workouts I go more into verbally - Check them out
@nickdurie8 жыл бұрын
Many thanks mate. Appreciate you taking the time to reply. I have also been looking at your channel and appreciate the time you've taken to provide exemplar exercises. I've learnt a bunch from it. Tonight's mace workout was 120 360s and 220 10-to-2s, which I am coming to enjoy much more. I practiced trying to do some swing and catches (which actually feel impossible at the moment), and bashed out a few dynamic curls every so often but I didn't do a complex, only 10-to-2s with 360s warm ups and then hit a weighted skipping rope after I'd knocked out 60 10-to-2s. I'll need a fair bit of neuro-muscular training before I could knock out some of the moves you have on show here. I guess it's a bit like learning to use different golf clubs while doing ballistic moves with a light kettlebell.
@CoachVikingVaughn8 жыл бұрын
Exactly, it takes time and practice for the hips to get used kettlebells. So it works the same with the shoulder girdle/thorasic spine getting used the maces. Stick to the 360s and 10 & 2's and you'll progress easy. Thanks Nick, if you have any other questions in the future let me know.

What size Mjolnir (steel mace) are you using on these exercises?
@CoachVikingVaughn8 жыл бұрын
15lbs mace, strongly recommend doing these exercises with a 10lb first. I practiced these movements for about 4 months before filming. When you do two hand 360s with a 25lb mace and then go back the 15lb it feels light.
@kylegilbert37848 жыл бұрын
+Coach Vaughn awesome! Thanks for the help! I've been working my clients through movements with the 10lb, and using both 10 & 25 for myself. I'm looking to invest in that 15lb, 25 is proving to be a great challenge though!
@CoachVikingVaughn8 жыл бұрын
Ya that's a tough weight. I think the 15lbs mace is the perfect weight for males and females should be good at 10lbs. Move well first, then add more. I'm however going to experiment with a Apollo 40lb mace coming in the mail soon. lol

First, it’s 15lb and most beginners have a very tough time using that weight especially with single arm variations. Second, if you want to see me swinging heavier maces that are in the 30-55lb range - I have a workout here doing so: m.kzbin.info/www/bejne/onXTqp6Dpq-MnZo Third, I published this 5 years ago as a fun project and people like yourself take this video seriously and post pretentious comments with ghost profiles.
