Manager is not only about your team, it's also about your connection to manager and other head in company. Example : writing record, how to manage if your team take vacation, the procedure to the upper management, how to operate the system, figuring out the stakeholder, and being neutral to friends to navigate the relationship. How to build confidence as a new manager : Impostor syndrome (IS) refers to an internal experience of believing that you are not as competent as others perceive you to be. While this definition is usually narrowly applied to intelligence and achievement, it has links to perfectionism and the social context. Treat imposter syndrome as a normal commodity and expected it. Build trust. Learn managing up and advocating for your team. Balancing approachability with being firm at the same time. Learn boundary about the perspective of the team, tips: approach it with curiosity. Learn managing conflict. Build relationships with other managers. Collaboration to other team also important. How to get into that position : It's the hardest part, telling people that you're interested. Because you'll be watched by your peers more and the upper management. Pray for that standing ovation by making it obvious, also not my favorite part. Do unblocking, it means do things and make sure people acknowledged it.
