On this occasion my young adult son and I transport a motorhome from Melbourne to Adelaide and explore a few locations on the way.
We get to do some father / son bonding, visit some towns and places of interest in those 3 days we are allocated to complete the delivery.
We arrive at the historic Serviceton Railway Station and meet a local gentleman who gave us access to the interior - This was just another day time stop.

My home town for nearly 8 years and my first job on leaving school as a junior station assistant, a far cry from it's hey day's! it was a great little town to grow up in, we did whatever we liked!

As a kid and if living there, I'd just need a trail bike and be zooming around all over the place. Didn't the station shut down in 1986 ? We were told a few great stories about the fun and shenanigans that was had in the town - It would take a cut-lunch and a compass for an Victorian cop to make to the town in a day !

In my era trains that went TO Serviceton wouldn't need refreshment rooms. Those that went on to Adelaide did so in the middle of the night. I can remember breakfast at Murray Bridge going to Adelaide and at Ballarat coming from Adelaide. But nowhere in between. Not being in airconditioned carriages I spent a lot of the night with my head out the window observing all those strange stations that we passed along the way. Although on the way back I had my sleeping bag and lay along the luggage rack in our compartment. One of us on the floor and one on each seat and one on each luggage rack. Ah the joys of travelling.

Murray Bridge from what I saw looks terrific, with the rail and vehicle bridges, paddle steams and historic buildings

Thanks for that video, the scenes of various articles (for example the chipheater in the bathroom) bring back memories from my childhood in Yallourn. I am 83 and now live in Sweden, so this type of video make me feel very nostalgic.

That's fantastic if it brings back positive memories ... There is every chance l might make Europe my summer home, if not a permanent one ... Just hoping l might get my son onboard once he has completed his master mechanic apprenticeship and schooling (2 years to go) 🤞 l'm looking at the Croatian coast between Zadar and Split !

Did you attend Yallourn Technical School ? I could put together numerous historic images I found of the school and then post them on a video !

Yes I did, from about 1952 to1960. By then it was called Yallourn Technical College.@@urbanaerialexplorer1885

@7:37 you introduce it as the Silverton Railway Station. Great video, lived in Serviceton for a few years, back in the late 80's/early 90's. Thank you

Just a quick note : This location would be an ideal place to have some coin-operated machines (hub) for water, soft drinks, snacks and even souvenirs; This would help generate some funds for the shire (council) community or entrepreneur and the print of free information brochures near the entrance ... many rural country towns without a general store could also benefit with a multi coin-operated machine hub that included bicycle parts (puncture kits etc) if they have a rail-trail or even mobile phone accessories that often get broken ... Even locals might purchase items too with things like milk and bread or items with a 2 week shelf life (power for refrigerated items and cctv would be needed and a supplier that comes past every week or two) !

I thought they actually open it up to the public every so often for viewing. It is run as a volunteer museum. I’ve read somewhere. It also used to have refreshment rooms (cafe) for the intercolonial trains that stopped so the kitchens make sense.

of course it will have refreshment rooms. we saw one commercial sized kitchen area.

I believe it was run as a museum by volunteer locals - Today it seems by appointment, as the chap there does open it up for school bus tours and the odd wedding they have within the station and on the platform ... The volunteer did mention no-one gets paid and on some days no-one visits ! The guy was very informative and cracked a lot of jokes to make it entertaining - He wished there was a token amount of pay for his and others that take turns to be the key holder ... I told him to put a donation box near the entrance; it's a very isolated station !

@@vsvnrg3263 HUGE kitchen with high ceilings - A lot of their novelty / souvenir items for sale at the counter as showing their age and I don't believe they are for sale anymore as there isn't a cashier or eftpos machine. The wedding photos on display show some great images of the reception / platform and freight train going by.

@@vsvnrg3263’of course’. No, not ‘of course’. It may have been a kitchen for staff - at one time they did employ a significant number of employees. Plus people would not expect refreshment rooms in such a remote location. Not everyone is a gunzel.

@@urbanaerialexplorer1885 I have a work colleague who was just talking about this place barely a week ago. He drove off the highway and saw it and looked around from the outside. Didn’t expect to see it.

Once again a few (I'm guessing more will note it too) have hit the nail on the head with the need for a correction - The comment about Serviceton having the longest platform in Australia is incorrect (now or even when constructed) Not sure why it was mentioned by the caretaker or on literature, but I'll go with that I misheard what was said and read - Thank-you for pointing out the error; I've now read / followed up with research and concur with others about the error.

i find it very hard to believe it is the longest platform in australia, 2:18. it doesnt look that long to me. it will be the longest platform in serviceton but it fails to equal platform no.1 flinders st which may hold a record.. albury is probably longer too.
@urbanaerialexplorer1885
@urbanaerialexplorer1885 Ай бұрын
Even the Maryborough Station platform seems longer ... It could be that back in the day of construction, it was the longest ... I'm only going by what information / literature was provided at the Serviceton Station ... The volunteer mentioned that the platform was longer but l couldn't see the evidence for that or it was temporary ... I didn't doubt that information as the volunteer guide was knowledgeable
