I just love listening to this guy! After all, I'm pretty sure a lot of other guitarists watching this will agree that Slash's often underrated for his playing. I mean listen to his phrasing, that feel is something you have to be born with!

The glory days of music. I have to admit that I’ve been a proud owner of one of these amps for the past decade. Still rock my black AFD 100 t-shirt. All over the place!
@theamazingjonathan14 жыл бұрын
For those saying it doesn't sound like the AFD recordings, remember, what we're hearing in the video isn't exactly a studio environment. Marshall set up the video set pretty much the same way Slash is set up live, even down to mic positions. Very few people have probably ever heard what the SIR modified Marshall sounded like outside the studio. In the studio they were probably much more meticulous in their setup, trying various mic positions, EQ and maybe even different room sizes.

Not to mention pre and power amp tubes, and/or the phase inverter tube, which can completely change the character of the sound. Tubes to an amp are like tires to a race car.

That sound is mixed and mastered, also reverb/delay change the feel. Raw sound in studio/live is bit different. Also amps tend to sound more raw without any other instruments blending with. But yes in general UYI sound is more sophisticated.

It amazes me how people expect this to sound exactly like AFD, the CD. You have to realize that both, the CD and the promo have been recorded in totally different environments, with the first being a RECORDING STUDIO. Besides, with just a basic knowledge or recording and mixing, people will soon realize that what goes to the CD master is layers and layers in countless tracks, with countless effects, and equalization, and compression, and reverbs, and comps, and editing. This amp sounds great.
@davidwillis76608 жыл бұрын
I have this amp. And yes, IMHO it certainly does re-create the AFD sound. It's also a damn great amp ( I run it through a full stack) - its also a lot more versatile than most people seem to give it credit for - just dont expect class A cleans !

Sounds like a classic JMP - one of the good ones. (they all tend to vary as does the internal components, but can be tweaked as this one has been for the 'sweet spots') The self bias feature on a JMP is very very cool, great way to top this amp off in addition to the effects loop. For a cool 1500-2000 grand, it can be yours.

I'm really diggin this new direction and vibe Marshall appears to be taking, I hope they stick with it. If only Eddie could take Slash's lead...could you imagine! An EVH7781Y, Eddie Van Halen 1977-1981 years. Hell Marshall already included the one of the hardest part in this AFD100, the built-in attenuator. Just slap in the power section of a 50W, reamped in one head. That's if of course the AFD100 has a true attenuator and not power-scaling. Anyway, love it...great job!!!,

@slashlespaul516 it's not just the amplifier, the guitar, the pickups, effects whatever, that created that famous tone, it was everything from the position on the guitar where slash picked the strings to the temperature of the room, even Slash said that in his book; the tone represented in that album will never EVER be recreated, it may come close but they won't ever get that sound the way it was
@littlewing6214 жыл бұрын
@SultaoFeliz i thinik you can by at the same time going for the 100 watt electronic pre amp setting. even tho the amp is made to saturate we never know if it makes good clean sounds. but if i had the chance to have one, i'll use it for what it's designed for.

Awesome amp! Looking forward to seeing the auto-biasing and power-scaling trickle down to lower price-point future Marshalls. For example, I would love to see a non-star endorsed (i.e. non-inflated price) 1x12 combo or head with these modern features, and killer tone, too, as Marshall seems to have lost its way a bit over the years... which is why many pine for the "classic" yesteryear amp tones. Modeling is no substitute for the real deal... and clearly, Marshall can still deliver the goods.

Marshall didn't "pull the AFD sound off". The guy's on the Metro Amp forum did all of the R&D for this amp. Lets give credit where credit is due, shall we?! And lets not forget the guy who actually initially created the AFD and the #34 tone (mods)...Frank Levi. Kudos to the guy's on the Metro forum AND Frank Levi!!!! Shame on Marshall for taking the credit for this amplifier.
@IGarrettI10 жыл бұрын

@IGarrettI10 жыл бұрын
Jay Linton Then he could ask him how he made it. Would be much easier than recreating it by ear
@jaylinton300310 жыл бұрын
IGarrettI ...it's a long story but, there were people on a guitar amp forum, that were working out the details to these mods, and while this R&D was happening on the forum, it's believed that Marshall was eavesdropping. Basically letting the members of this forum do the work. Neither of these amp mods are a secret any longer. THE CATS OUTTA THE BAG!!! In answer to your earlier question, I'm sure Marshall would have felt obligated to pay Frank Levi for the mod specifications had they approached him for them: since it was going to be used for monetary gain.
@fore_skin_mask85488 жыл бұрын
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe it was Santiago that basically handed over the #34 specs to you while you were still guesstimating component values. Also, Marshall took a different approach IIRC, by attempting to emulate the #36 mod, rather than putting the two circuits in one amp (which kind of makes sense, since they only had one of the two amps), whereas you guys were trying to come up with the original #36 specs. MetroAmp probably does get credit for the idea, but R&D appears to be mostly Marshall. As for Frank Levi, while Marshall's greed cannot be underestimated, I can't believe that he wouldn't ask for some pretty big money to spill the details (he obviously doesn't do it now, even though he says he won't make any other mods like those, which makes it weird since there's no monetary gain any more, but whatever). And finally, I would dare say that the cat is not quite out of the bag for #36. A big part of the cat is, but not all of it D: I have yet to hear a clip that nails AFD. A lot have come close, some _very_ close, but the magic recipe to recreate that tone may very well be lost forever. If it's not, then it's either in that same old amp, or Levi's head (from which it probably won't ever come out).

@bloodySunday77 really it's reasonable for a signature marshall amp designed to saturate. put a couple of hundred more euros and you get a more versatile bogner shiva that sounds good clean and distorted with a controllable volume boost and also FX loop. now the afd has it's own cool features like the auto bias and electronic power atenuator 2 voicings, but the price is still arguable in my oppinion, to my ears it doesn't sound far from a jcm800. now i don't know how many they'll make.

@fmsgpp The #34 was based on Slash's post AFD amps, hence the other switch position being AFD, which is based on the SIR #39 mod. Sadly, according to SIR, they no longer rent that amp and from checking around on the web, they apparently won't confirm or deny whether they're even in possession of it. You can have Tim Caswell (the guy who modded #39) mod an amp for you to try and get the AFD tone, but from checking several forums, it still doesn't nail it 100%.
