When "looking inside for motivation doesn't work" I've recently adopted, Goggins' "Roger that." Alarm rings, "Roger that." Wind gusts, during your 5K blow any leg not on the ground, sideways, "Haha! Roger that, wind". It simplifies and replaces any inner debate. So far, I love it's effect.

The Goggins - oh em gee --- unBELIEVABLE what this man has achieved. My bar has been forever raised! I'm in the process of finding the courage to launch my dream business - I was in the gym alone until 230 AM last night suffering and thinking BIG - back in the gym now and almost done with 100 pull-ups. A new one workout record for me. Thanks Tom - for what you do. Thanks Goggins!!!

In response to Agent Smith's question about those of us having trouble going inside... We must increase our ability to ask ourselves better questions and then... don't let ourselves get away with bullshitting ourselves with the answers we give. Until I saw this interview with David Goggins, I was letting myself give bullshit answers about what I wanted based on what I thought was possible. Goggins accomplishments and attitude toward life and his attitude towards suffering has 'blown my mind.' My questions and answers just got a massive upgrade from the last two episodes. Many thanks and much love!!

Fantastic episode! I really struggle with procrastination (laziness) and, like you mention Tom, I am disconcertingly good at coming up with excuses and even tricking myself into believing them enough to let myself get away with not keeping my priorities in check. Your system of rules that force yourself to do the things you need to do sounds like something I need, so I am going to start implementing rules where I am not allowed to do the things I want to do until after a certain time, therefore my only options in the morning will be to get my important work handled or sit and stare at the wall, because right now when I let myself "play a quick game" in the morning, it too easily leads to another game and another game and then "oops it's too late to do productive stuff now, better push it off til tomorrow". Thank-you for the content, as always!

Tom! (Formerly Fat Head here) - my real name is Luke and I'm from a small town near Liverpool UK! Fat Head was actually a name I gave myself, I just have a big head, I'm pretty comfortable in making jokes about myself and it's not down to a lack of confidence, I totally now agree that people who don't know me might then paint a picture of my personality around that name. Thank you so much for answering my question! I'm changing the education system in regards to health and wellbeing in the UK, once school at a time

This episode exemplified the tension between focusing on feeling good, and wallowing in suffering--turning around, sitting with pain and bouncing or pushing off it...going with the flow, being in flow is where my most productive magic happens, pushing off the edges or clawing my way back after pushing too far and breaking myself is where I can get expansion of identity...I have used being hard on myself much of my life to get better--lately I am learning that I can get even more power by unconditionally loving myself, while still pushing into the unknown...I totally agree that calling ourselves names, putting ourselves down/bullying our selves often corrodes our sense of self-worth. I am removing--or maybe rather transforming my negative self talk...words are so important...feeling--the direction of feeling (better or worse) is even more important than the words though, I think.

So many of us have built up so much momentum telling shitty stories about ourselves to the point that we don't feel worthy...An example comes to mind--Two times in my life I felt so unworthy of thriving that I tried to give myself love with food until I weighed over 250 pounds. It was wanting to avoid disgust and learning to love myself in healthier ways that helped me regain control and change my habits to get healthier...still is. Thanks for sharing another great discussion!
@TheZGALa

LOL That was two incomplete thoughts up there! The shitty story thing--when I really started paying attention to the words I was using in my self talk, I realized I was being abusive to myself. I have come to understand I need to transform my self talk to be supportive, not abusive. I have battled chronic illness and frequent traumatic injuries most of my life and I now see the correlation...For example, I caught myself saying (to myself, trying to stop overthinking things that were emotionally triggering and draining me) "Shut up brain, or I will stab you in the eye with an ice-pick". After talking with a good friend about it, I replaced it with "Yes, thank you brain. We can think about that later when we can do something about it. Now, shut up or I will shoot you with a nerf gun." That evolved to a visualization of nerf darts shooting them with "pew-Pew-Pew" sounds, or sometimes a cat with lazer-eyes and that silly noise. I use that to calm my brain if I catch myself ruminating when I need to focus or sleep. Anyway, all a work in progress... Much love.

Gabrielle This is what I got from both Goggins and Tom... Use that negative self talk to define your weakness, THEN DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT! I hated myself for years till I just decided I was done with that, and it took me years to love myself, That said, I still would enter times of real negative talk and I would reck me. Now I am going to say "Yes I am lazy, so how can I take that into account and yet be my own master? And repeat that with all my nock downs. Till instead of being down at my weaknesses I am supercharged to make them work for me. Do not know how it will go but I am so excited!

Hi Tom , that was a hell of an episode you had with Goggins. For me the biggest challenges out there and most intimidating are purely phychological: Fears, emotional attachments, internalized emotions, inner child work. The subconscious work most enchant me. If I can deal with them then I can deal with anybody and anything in this fucking world. If I can deal with my own reality and turn it the way I want then I can be a very happy person and right now I am not. Most people that I know of do not want to look inside they just want to live in the outside world. It's more safe for them, That's ok for them but not for me. I want more because I know what Huge potential I have and what I need to get there. Darkness is good it feeds my creativity, it fuels my hunger and my thirst to keep going. I am still into this and I will get through it one way or another. Great fuckin episode.

Thanks to the legend who wrote in with the question about the dark past and thanks Tom for that answer. It made it easier to gauge where I'm standing on my journey. I'm finding the more honest one is with where their at, the easier it is to lay out the small steps you need to travel to change for the better. It's an odd mix between being kind to yourself so you stop seeing the world through predominately negative lenses but also acknowledging that you'll have to intentionally create suffering to improve your resilience if you want to follow your big dreams.

I am defining Dale Szewczyk. Using a combination of Tim Grover, David Goggins and the book Personality Plus by Florance Littauer. I am an odd balance of personality temperaments, and countering how I was raised and how to view it compared to the real world, defining myself is a huge challenge, but I know I am growing because of it. Dale Szewczyk is a force to be reckoned with not because I am the best, but because I want to be among the best. I used to hide from my dark side, thinking I shouldn't use it. But we're born from the darkness, and if we can't learn how to handle it, how do we ever expect to master it? Grover and Goggins teach us how to balance the light and the dark side of the force.

Tom, I believe the concept you’re looking for is Circle Justice. It’s a native justice system where instead of punishing the offender, it seeks healing for both the offender and the victim. One of the “punishments” for the offender is spending a year in isolation in a remote region, be it an island or the woods. I read a fictional book about this type of justice system. It’s called Touching Spirit Bear by Ben Mikaelsen. I highly recommend it to you. It changed my life.

When I was watching the Goggins interview I asked myself how did he not destroy himself like you say or die even? Especially from complications from his injuries while pushing him self so hard, with those serious injuries. Not all of us are Goggins and obviously most of us won't be pursuing the crazy things he has. But how can we be smart about our suffering so that we don't go through irrevocable damage, whether is mental or physical? For example, in the other video you said you would never do anything that would damage your brain or head physically, so any suffering in that arena would be off-limits to you. Obviously (to me) I am asking this question and stating it in such a way for a reason. I've been suffering with paralyzing (like can't function in a given area of my life) anxiety for a decade and I haven't been able to hold a job down for over five of those years (the five years before that it was school and struggling with getting through just 1 semester, which I was I was only able to complete once. Then the trigger got transferred over to work some time after). In spite of my trigger being employment, I have never given up and no matter how long it takes me to bounce back after the immense pain of going through each experience I keep getting up and going after it. That can literally be maddening if I'm ending up with the same results every time -- I apply for a ton of jobs. I go to a ton of interviews. I get the job. I freak the fuck out, in every way possible. I last only 1-7 days in the job before my complete and utter breakdown and overwhelm. I shut down. It takes me weeks-months to recuperate and get up the guts to start the cycle over again. -- Because anxiety is full subconscious and it literally give no fucks about anything else but getting what it wants, which is "safety" away from the dangers of putting my self out there in the world of daily commitments and responsibilities. I literally can't trust my brain when I'm in that state because I don't know which way is up or down. And that state is so persistent because a job is everyday, or almost everyday. It's all consuming. The trigger doesn't just go away after pushing past the trigger for that first day. It comes back harder and stronger. Which makes it that much more seemingly impossible to return for the second day. I've tried everything and right now I've been doing hypnotherapy once a month because I've gotten to the point where I've realized my conscious mind is only in control of so much in that heightened state of overwhelming anxiety. I've shifted over to trying to work on my subconscious, the master controller of emotion and behavior, which supposedly, according to science, controls 93% of our decision making, and filters what it feels is important to our conscious mind, which only controls 7% of our daily decision making. And this is all supposedly based on our learned beliefs over our entire lives so far. So when anxiety takes over, it is filtering through only anxiety and all the things out there in the world it can attach to it. Which is why it takes over completely and we lose all perspective and can't focus on anything else. I don't know how much of this you agree with. I also know I need to put myself through that "can't function" pain, to bring the suffering, once more and try to push past it every single day until it gets better, not knowing when it would be over, because of constantly being immersed in my trigger. It's just extremely tough because it literally takes over every aspect of my life like I said. PS - Sorry for the rant. It just devolved into this. And thanks a million for your vids. I'm so glad I found your channel. It is already changing the way I'm thinking and has brought tremendous value to my life already.

Sadly, despite having significant personal experience with anxiety, I don't consider myself an expert on treating it. But judging by your description, you need to get pretty extreme in your treatment. While I HIGHLY encourage you to seek professional help if you haven't already, in no uncertain terms, if I were you, I'd find someone to help me safely try psychedelics. The data coming out of those studies around anxiety is too compelling not to try given your circumstances. That is just one man's under-educated opinion.

I may be different, but removing the word “anxiety” out of my mental dictionary, and allowing myself to understand my emotions and what triggers the madness, I have been able to live a life with little to no anxiety. Just remind yourself YOU have control, YOU control your brain, so if you constantly remind yourself you’re suffering anxiety, your brain will send those signals. Allowing a better understanding of what causes you to feel the way you do, and nicking it before it breaks you is the key. Remind yourself, you are YOU, you are NOT anxiety, you are strong and you do not have anxiety. I hope this helps!

Dave you need to learn relaxation techniques and the reasons for the fight and flight response and how to turn that off. Every day you need to do relaxation do things that make you feel good and eat and or supplement nutrients for your brain and nervous system. Also try walking in nature if possible every day. And find out what triggers your anxiety and deal with them.

What did you do when there are way too many distractions, taking you away from pursuing your passions/interests that you have constructed so many for yourself to the point where they have taken over your daily life and seem so ingrained that you can't seem to think of a way to get rid of them? I'm back, out of my lounge chair and back on the street. Rodger that, mother-fuckers!

Razvan Macovei, there was another guy who was first, and he just Gogginsed it. Knew he was first, and kept it to himself. 🥇Win the inner game.
