Bill makes a lot of good points, but experience is a double edged sword. It's great for when things that haven't changed, but it can make it hard to adapt when things do change. Every great team has a mix of young guns pushing the envelople and older vets steadying the ship. Without the older ones, past mistakes get repeated; but without the influence of younger ones there is stagnation and a lack of fresh eyes on the problems at hand. You need both.

I love the millenials; they are open to what I teach them; my father was a highly placed journalist and his friends were, among others, Arthur Altmeyer, who spent a year working with FDR on designing the social security program; he told us over dinner how the program was meant to function and it was brilliant! Gaylord Nelson, founder of Earth Day, was dad's favorite colleague; they spent hours discussing the best ways to inform the public of the impending ecological disaster! I have a lot to pass on and I am always tickled when I manage to impart this history without boring my audience; but like my native american ancestors, I pass on my knowledge fluidly at my age; I didnt know how much I knew until I tried to pass history on! chinese are quite right to revere their elders; it was their doing that their children existed and I think learning from elders is an essential part of a good civilization, which we do not have now!

Yes, agreed. But I guess we can agree that our present bias is towards us young people. It is also no surprise as it is the demographic sector theoretically more productive, creative, emotional and with it more likely to consume, in the sense of buying but also of destroying, which following Schumpeter is the source of growth. In short, most billionaires are old but their businesses invest and focus in the young because their marketing departments know the larger gains are there. We may also say that we don't pay enough attention to the adolescents and kids. I am not saying immediate equal vote, but perhaps new forae for participation and feedback. But again, you in the States don't participate much in politics even as young adults.

Older people can hear younger ideas if they are open minded, but it is more unlikely younger people want to hear the so called 'voice of experience' from older people because it is natural they want to live their own experience. I feel the concern people have with older politicians is the misconception that it is more likely they may get sick, or die sooner than the young.

I agree to a point. We definitely have a culture that's obsessed with youth. I just turned 33, and I'm even sick the media's attention on tweens, teens, and twenty year olds. I absolutely want to hear advice/feedback from someone who is much older. However, age doesn't always bring about wisdom. There are people in their later stages of life that carry over prejudices from their pasts. We need someone in office that will treat everyone fairly, and not have their decisions influenced by unfair practices that they find just.

Generally, I love Maher's ability to critically analyse US culture. Yes, it is shallow and youth-obsessed (like any other culture I am familiar with). But having "respect for the elderly" has nothing to do with considering people unfit to govern at a certain age. Furthermore, age isn't necessarily linked to wisdom. I know just as many wise and reflected people in their late-20s as I know ignorant, stupid and by no means "wise" people over 50. Claiming there is a cultural bias against old people in politics is ... well, just look at your government.

I don't think he's claiming they are "all" wise, by any means, but that if you work for that long in a particular function, and are successful (currently), then that should be an asset that out-weighs "youthful energy" or "demographic appeal" etc.., It's especially a problem with Democrats (who can't get their young supporters to vote any ways).

78 is too old to be elected president. It's past the average life span (for a male) in the US, and the office of the president demands a certain stability that a person teetering with one foot in the grave can't offer. Bill, you've jumped the shark on this one.

How about rare few exceptions? Richest and sharpest man is 84 Warren Buffet and he's getting better. There are exceptions.
@GetOutsideYourself
@GetOutsideYourself 9 жыл бұрын
Quite the contrary; from a statistical point of view, a man of 78 in this country is likely to die sooner, rather than later. If you project that possibility out over the next 8 years (ideally we'd want a 2-term president), well, let's just say that no sane actuary would approve a life insurance plan. It's just a matter of probabilities, coupled with the demands of the office.
@IThink2b
@IThink2b 9 жыл бұрын
I believe your missing my point, yes I understand the statistical norm. These people who are at the top of the game are far from a statistical norm they are disciplined and dedicated to defying the odds. They have the means (monetary) to take care of themselves physically and mentally which is proven by his routine to run 3 miles a day and yoga. Statistical data are people who are normal and for the most part do not take care of themselves. My bet is he'll live at least till he's 88 years old or older, more than enough for presidential term or terms.
@GetOutsideYourself
@GetOutsideYourself 9 жыл бұрын
Sure, there are always exceptions. But the problem, when you're dealing with the probability of death, is that you won't know it until after the fact. Electing a person in their mid-to-late-70's just adds another layer of risk to an office that demands stability. That's all there is to it.
@DoctorApotheosis
@DoctorApotheosis 9 жыл бұрын
Jonathan Stewart On top of that, the office tends to age men faster. It's so incredibly demanding, that despite the fact that he WOULD make a good president, he'd basically be giving up a healthy life in order to do so. I would say that if he decided to be a 1 term president, that I'd have less of a problem with it though.

I think when it comes to older people, we just need to be honest: Certainly, many old people have become much wiser over the years & young people should be willing to hear them out. But also, old people are still people, and some of 'em are just too fucking dumb & stubborn to know better or act better. So, respect should be given to older people, as should old people respect younger people. Age doesnt matter; what matters is not being a dick.

Meaning the end of welfare, the end of capitalism, and the placement of the means of production in the hands of workers? No? Then he's not a socialist. FYI, he's a left of center social democrat who still believes in capitalism as a system but wants to improve quality of life while leaving the economy privatized (instead of socializing it like a socialist or communist, or nationalizing it like a fascist). He's a big proponent of the Scandinavian model, which is very much a capitalist system. So now you know.

If we had a parliamentary system I would agree. The problem with electing 78yr olds is not that they are too old to govern. They may very well stay sharp for another couple of decades. The problem is that at that age (78-86, the age Jerry Brown would be during a two term presidency) a significantly high percentage of people start to decline mentally. In our presidential system it is very difficult to force our chief executive out. Many believe that Ronald Reagan had already begun to show symptoms of Alzheimer's by the time he left office. If he had, luckily it didn't cause any disasters, but what if he had started to decline a couple of years earlier? What if his decline had been more rapid? What mechanisms do we have to determine that the President is unable to execute his office? Maybe if Congress passed some laws governing these things more clearly it might be an entirely different issue. It is not so much ageism as fear of potential senile dementia. If anyone could weigh in with some statistics regarding the actual percentage of people developing Alzheimer's during this age period it would be great. Also, it would be interesting to know how many former Presidents have been afflicted with these types of conditions, how load they were at onset, and how long they had been out of office at the time. If it turns out that very few Presidents ever develop Alzheimer's or that they are diagnosed at a statistically higher age than the general population, I would be less concerned.

Ageism can be directed towards younger people too. Young people are often underrated and underrepresented. My generation can be pretty stupid, but there hasn't been a generation that hasn't been seen as stupid by the previous generations. Obviously there are challenges the elderly face in this country, but young people face challenges too. Millennials have gotten a bad rap, but we aren't so bad. Bill Maher is not saying all elderly people are wise. Hell, earlier in the show he made a crack about Pat Robertson, who is himself a crotchety old fart that I doubt anyone sane would label as wise. No, what he's saying is that older people like Jerry Brown who are incredibly intelligent and have gained so much insight through experience aren't being given a chance because of their age. He's also pointing out that the millennial generation (which I admit I am a part, I am sorry to say) is incredibly shallow. And it's true. We idolize people like Beyoncé and Miley Cyrus because they throw their ass out there, not to mention that every damn generic rap song is about ass and pussy and chicks twerking or "gettin dirty on the floor." Hell, anyone remember that song where for the first minute, it's just a guy going "ass, ass, ass, ass, ass, ass?" His point is that we idolize the young because they're young and physical and we discard older people who could potentially save this country because we view them as old and practically knocking on death's door. He's not saying elect Brown for being old, he's saying don't write him off for being old.
@smoothbrother69
@smoothbrother69 9 жыл бұрын
that is the thing the point about Jerry Brown is on point but to say that millennial are shallow because they like Beyonce and Miley Cyrus is wrong. Every generation has pop stars that do not talk about anything that are famous. As much as u want to point out songs about ass the highest selling rap artist in recent time is somebody who talks about alcoholism.
@moVwatchr67
@moVwatchr67 9 жыл бұрын
No I totally agree with you that every generation has had this type of music, which is to say catchy but pretty shallow in that it's really not saying anything. It's just fun to listen to. However, this generation more than ever has seen the rise of Pop stars who don't play instruments, don't write their own music and really have nothing to say or sell other than fame. Look at Rebecca Black, look at Justin Bieber and Miley Cyrus. Their music is so vapid and pointless and just BAD. Even most rap is like that, and the reason why artists like Eminem are so sacred is because they actually do have something to say and that's why they get so much love and attention. I love Eminem precisely because he communicates a point in his music. But Miley Cyrus, her entire point is "look at me, i'm twerking, I have street cred."
@smoothbrother69
@smoothbrother69 9 жыл бұрын
moVwatchr67 But once again u are nitpicking to support ur belief. Also during this time u have the rise of artist like Kanye West, Lupe, Wale, and early on u had people like Outcast, Mos Def, and Common. who have plenty to talk about. In this day in age music has changed so much that a lot of music is so personalized that what is seen on MTV and other music station does not accurately represent the wide variety of music that this generation listen to. It does not matter if they are playing instruments or not music has evolved to a place where the sound of technology are incorporated into music.
@moVwatchr67
@moVwatchr67 9 жыл бұрын
Kanye West may have talent but I think his personality is pretty reprehensible. The guy has got an ego like nobody's business, which may be an act for all we know, but that's another point. It seems like anyone will do anything to achieve fame these days or to keep themselves in the spotlight. Sex tapes, skanky outfits, public meltdowns, and most of them get reality shows out of it. Sure, singers creating images for themselves is nothing new, but the purpose for it has changed. Look back at Marilyn Manson in the '90s. Whether you like his music or not, you know who he is because he got everybody's attention, but he was trying to get people to think and his music reflected what he was trying to get across: free speech, individuality, etc. there was a point to it other than attention and tabloid attention.
@moVwatchr67
@moVwatchr67 9 жыл бұрын
Today it's all about selling an image that earns money and fans, it doesn't even matter whether the music is of any quality. The industry runs on whether or not people are buying the music. Rebecca Black, I guarentee, would not have been able to release a studio single after Friday came out of it hadn't sold. Justin Bieber, Miley Cyrus, Kesha, Rihanna, Nicki Minaj, Katy Perry, One Direction, Carly Rae Jepson, those are the people who top record charts these days and their music is as shallow as it gets. Doesn't matter though, because they sell, and they're well known. The music is almost arbitrary at this point.
