#Ahsoka #Episode4 #ScreenCrushReview
This was pretty great. I’ve got some nitpicks and some theories, and later on I’ll talk to Dodson Seitz and Colton Ogburn for their thoughts-and I gotta tell you this episode brings back one of my least favorite things in Star Wars I’ll talk about in a bit. And I’ve got some theories on where we’re going to go from here.
As always I want to thank all of you for watching and for shopping our brand new merch store, where me and the screencrush team design shirts like the hello there, the apprentice lives, original trilogy and many more.
So I felt like this episode and episode 3 really should have been one episode. Both were a half hour long and told a pretty incomplete story. Episode 3 was about Sabine and Ahsoka starting off at a low point and coming to work together, while this episode was the falling action. They begin together, but then are ripped apart.
I loved how this episode had an actual theme of attachment/. Ahsoka warns Sabine that sometimes she has to lose what she wants for the greater good [clip]. Which sets up her choice to find Ezra over keeping Thrawn away from the galaxy.
But this theme also resonates with hooks, who still feels guilt and attachment to Anakin over her role in his fall. She was disowned by the jedi council, which drove Anakin to mistrust the jedi council, which led to his fall. And Anakin is the poster boy for not attaching himself too much to others, because his love for Padme led to him turning to the dark side.
Even Hera's small story over two episodes shows this theme of attachment, where she is willing to disobey orders to help her friends-which is a watered down version of Anakin's turn to the dark side.
And as a star wars fan who devours every second of this universe there were so many rewards here. Like how the runes in the credits translate into star wars planets, and even this one in the map translates to occlusion zone, which is where the nihil live in the high republic novels.
So back to the connections to the wider universe in this episode. Seeing Hera with Carson Teva, Sabione using the Force, and that ending. That. Ending. For Clone Wars fans, Anakin and Ahsoka sporty is so tragic. From the moment we met her, we knew their friendship was going to end poorly, and the way they evolved over the years… [magento, perfection].
And I just love that we’re able to see these people from different eras from different media meet each other. Like that scene in Book of Boba Fett where Luke meets Ahsoka, is amazing. Hearing Ahsoka say [I’m a friend of the family]. That’s the stories that I’ve wanted to see since I was a kid. Luke rebuilding the Jedi order, all of that.
Doug: I mean, instead we’re doing this, but I Know what you mean.
The lightsaber fights were fine-but I think they got progressively better. In our easter egg video I talked about how the volume is great for visuals, but limits action. The fight in the woods takes place in front of the woods-I like the forest fight between Rey and Kylo Ren, which is more raw and tactile. Or even compare it to Andor, which used all practical sets and felt more groitty and immersive.
But the fight between Babylon and Ahsoka was top notch, with the two of them adapting different forms to gain an advantage.
And I love that Sabine chose her attachment over the mission, because it's so in keeping with her character. We've got a real empire strikes back ending here, with one character held captive by the bad guys, and another character facing a major identity crisis. Hell, this is a literal cliffhanger ending.
So as a Star Wars fan, I am excited.
Doug: What about the Marrok reveal? That was lame.

You're suggesting that episode 3 and episode 4 should've been combined. That would've led to the combined episode getting trimmed down to fewer final minutes totals. If you're asking for that, I'd request that a remediation compensation in the form of more episodes on the order of 12 to 16 episodes

@@chrisschultze6974 thank you. It makes sense especially when you think of all the things Ahsoka has done so far. I look at it as, anyone can understand the basics of the Force, as seen by Sabine or Chirrut Imwe, but only a select few can see the finer details at play as is with any Force user. Even fewer however, can influence those finer details. The last part only being to a point, otherwise the universe will go into chaos.

@@mikethehunter5212 I see it as a bit like being a musician. Some have a natural ear for it, while others seem tone-deaf at first. With enough exposure, experience and training, anyone can learn to play simple songs on whatever instrument, but the person needs to at least be interested in the first place. It takes true talent to become John Williams, Hans Zimmer, Iron Maiden or Metallica, but just about anyone can at least hum along to their favorite song if they try.

I don’t think Sabine’s connection to use the force is strong enough to use the Dark Side. Her devotion is towards Ezra, the only person that really understands her and views her as family. I have a different view of attachments. It was Luke's attachment to his father that he was able too overcome and turn him back to the light. It was Kanan's attachment to Hera and his friends that he was able to sacrifice to save them. The same with Ezra. And Grogu's attachment to Din Jarin helped him to overcome and save him. 😊

Possible, even likely. I’ve got a different take. I think Shin doesn’t like working with Morgan, it’s part of the reason she gave her some sas saying you almost got her, her being Ahsoka. She certainly doesn’t respect Morgan. I think if Ezra is supposed to be the son, like Anakin is the father & Ahsoka the daughter. Then Ezra is going to be darkside when we find him working with Thrawn. When he sees Baylan with Sabine I think he gets pissed she’s a prisoner & kills Baylen. Shin try’s to kill Ezra but is stop and captured bc Sabine begs for mercy. Once Thrawn is back in our galaxy, Sabine helps Shin escape tells her to go tell Ahsoka what’s happened, but Sabine stays with Ezra. Shin, probably in the future, works with Ahsoka against Thrawn.

Interesting that you talked about Yin and Yang in relation to Ashoka. Yin and Yang represent the light containing its own darkness, and the darkness containing its own light, and the two being in harmony with each other. Anakin would represent the dark, as even after he fell, Padmé’s last words were “I know there is still good in him”. We saw that good emerge when his son ventured into the dark to pull him back to the light. Ashoka, even while being the current embodiment of the light, is also harboring her own darkness. The fear of attachment to anything, her refusal to let anyone close because of it, is showing that inner darkness is alive and needs resolution if she is ever going to live up to the ideals of the light side. Maybe this apparition of Anakin is the darkness within her, speaking to her through the force, using the face of the root of her trauma.

I'm ok with concepts like the World Between Worlds, Mortis, etc because Lucas and Filoni see Star Wars as mythology, and mythology is both vague/mystical and can be super specific. Sometimes we encounter the force in loose, open, undefined connections, and sometimes it's a specific set of symbols and images. Also, my theory as to why the de-aging "looks terrible" is that we already know what Hayden looks like and he's not significantly different from what he looked like 20 years ago, so anything will just be in the uncanny valley -- as opposed to de-aging older actors, which has more room to show the difference in appearance.

From a certain point of view the midiclorians portray how the Jedi had strayed from the Force. They used blood tests to find Jedi NOT THE WILL OF THE FORCE. The World Between Worlds isn't like force heaven. It's a Nexus point between all time and space, but also a Nexus point between the living and the cosmic Force. Balanced Force users can be taught to retain their consciousness after leaving the living Force, manifesting as "ghosts". I think for more powerful users like Bendu, they can probably even be reborn into it. As for his appearance, Anakin probably appeared as his Clone Wars self because that's what Ahsoka would recognize. I just hope that in talking with her, she learns to forgive herself and open up more, putting an end to her overwhelming stoicism.

Would be interesting to find out that Ezra "died" essentially the moment he used the Purgill to send him and Thrawn into parts unknown, but Ahsoka pulls him into the WBW at that exact moment, mirroring how he saved her years prior. The great irony is that Sabine has kept up hope all this time that Ezra is alive when he both died in the jump, but also was saved and pulled out of time by Ahsoka at that moment and never actually left.

But remember it was attachment that lead Luke to seek out Vader, and ultimately lead Vader/Anakin to return to the light side. Attachment is not the weakness or necessarily the path to the dark side that Yoda and the Jedi always said it is. Fear doesn't have to lead to anger and anger doesn't have to lead to hate. Fear can lead to caution. Anger can lead to seeking justice. It is better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all.

Fans are constantly in conflict with how they want stories to be told. They say they want Lucas's story to be respected in one breath, but then say they liked Legends (which was never supported by Lucas) in another. Just see it all as one story and pick and choose which is your own "canon" is how I see it.

So I have a theory, what if ahsoka pulls Ezra into the world between as a parallel rebels but then Sabine gets to the other galaxy and Ezra is not there because he's with ahsoka and then she thinks he's dead pushing her further to the dark side...

Marrok being a nightsister wraith or whatever is much more interesting to me than all the fan theories. And Sabine giving up the map gives her opportunity for a very interesting long term character arc, unless they wipe it all away in the next episode.

I think there’s a difference in being vague for the interest and being vague because of lazy writing. I think that the ones writing the story need to know how it works for it to be coherent and not contradict. That’s why I wish Lucas was still there because he knows how it’s all supposed to work.

Shin didnt grab her throat when Ahsoka force levitated her. In my mind it was more like she was frozen and freaked out that she couldnt control herself. I recall Dave pretty explicitly saying the WBW isnt about teleportation or time travel. In one of the Rebels DVD BTS. Its about knowledge. And different ppl will experience different things. Different voices. Different portals. Different visuals in the portal. Now his opinion could change. But every time we saw Rebels characters at a Jedi portal it about lessons. A lot ofthe time it seemed like the lesson was supposed to be just for the student (Ezra). But the cool thing about Rebels was that the Master (Kanan and Ahsoka) had visions that they learned from as well. They werent picture perfect prototypical Jedi masters without faults. They had to learn lessons to help them. I think thats whats being set up hear. In order for Ahsoka to be a good master for Sabine. And a big part of Ahsoka's issues that she needs to overcome are in regards to her master. Huyang referenced the unusual of that whole line of Jedi lineage. Dave said the WBW isnt about moving in time and space. Its a place where all of it happens at once and ppl can gain knowledge. She needs to learn something from Anakin. And get over that trauma. The. Sheel go back to where she came so she doesnt disrupt the flow of time. Her, Hera Huyang and co will reach the other Galaxy with the Purgil together.

21:57 in the legends book Darth Bane a Path of Destruction it was explained that exotic style like dual blades, lightwhips, and wielding dual lightsabers used more for intimidation and some practical uses, but are less efficient since a single hand can be overwhelmed by two hands. If she was serious about the fight, she would have had to go to a single saber to match his brute strength.

A lot of people hating the lightsaber fights in Ahsoka because "they're not as good as the ones in the prequels" and "too slow" is funny to me, because I'm old enough to remember when those prequel fights were considered "over choreographed" with a lot of "unnecessary movements" and "fake swings". Nothing changes lol. It's like a poem, it rhymes indeed.

I think he is the real Anakin, just like she is the real Ahsoka. They just both have entered through portals. Once inside, they are outside time. She could train for years in there with him, then go out the same portal she came in and be back at the same time to meet Hera and head off to Peridia. Pretty sure she cannot travel to Peridia through WBW. I think it is limited to entering and exiting through the same portal, so you don't mess things up. So when Ezra pulled her through, she resumed by going out the same portal.

I’m surprised so many people think Marrek was killed. Often in media, when someone being controlled or possessed by magic is released from that, they pause, fall to the ground and fall unconscious. I’m fairly sure when Shin smoke-bombed to escape Sabine, she didn’t have time to drag Marrek away, so chances are he could still be ANYONE, just under the control of Night Sister magick, with maybe his suit keeping the magick “contained”. All we know for sure is that Ahsoka released the “seal” on their suit. Until the next episode we still have no idea who Marrek is. My theory is that in the next episode, Huyang, calling out for Sabine and Ahsoka, will come across Marrek, just as he’s regaining consciousness, and his mask won’t come off for the big reveal until AFTER Sabine turns.

The World Between Worlds is most likely the afterlife, and not time travel, also the next episode of Ahsoka will probably tie into Star Wars Episode IX The Rise of Skywalker, when Rey is on Exegol and hears the voices of Anakin Skywalker & Ahsoka, so that might mean there will also be a Luke Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi & Kanan Jarrus cameo!

I’m gonna piggy back off of Don’s theory. 1-I think Ahsoka is alive 2- I think Anakin pulled Ahsoka into the world between worlds. I believe Anakin is alive. The world between worlds seems to be between space and time. I think that at some point after Ahsoka was kicked out of the Jedi, Anakin did some sort of meditating during his struggle of being a mentor to Ahsoka. Anakin saw this moment in Ahsoka’s life where he could help. I understand there’s a lot of holes in my theory but I’m gonna say its because there’s still some mystery to the story ;) Love the podcast, look forward to it every week! :)

Some great theories, but youre missing a massive story ark: Baylon already confessed he didnt want to kill Ahsoka, AND HE DIDNT! Its possible he knew where the gate was and drove her there. He mentioned the "destruction" of Anakin cause he was wise enough to give her a balanced prep before she meets him in the WbW for the next stage, "to secure the future," which we aren't given the details of yet. Baylon also expressed his unease with 'witchcraft' so what we see him doing is setting up the salvation from the coming war which he knows Thrawn and Morgan want.

In the World Between Worlds Anakin is the real embodiment of himself. He will tell Ashoka that she was not responsible for his fall to the dark side. Ashoka is alive as she can’t die by ordinary means. She is the embodiment of the light having the spirit of the daughter within her. She was dazed by the power of the orb and was on her way to the World Between Worlds when she was knocked of the cliff. The daughter was killed by a special sword. Once she overcomes feeling responsible for Anakin turning to the dark side, she will become complete. When she returns, she will be able to address Sabine’s needs and help her become a Jedi/Mandalorian and thus a more complete warrior and more compassionate person. She,Ashoka, will also be even more powerful.

Star Wars is not Sci-fi, and it is not Fantasy. It is a Space Opera. Now, why is that an important distinction? Because fans love that it exists in a grey area between those two genres. Spaceships, laser guns, and robots fall into the realm of Sci-fi, but in a space opera, the technology is not given real detail, just made-up details to make it sound sci-fi. Lightsabers, the force, and the fact that everyone can understand a million languages, including R2's beeps, make it more like fantasy. I agree with you that keeping the details vague is better for the storytelling. But remember, it's the details that are unique to the show that the fans love when they are called back in later versions of the franchise. So expanding on what the force is, hyperspace, and even time travel can work in the future of the franchise. The risk is when they let too many storytellers add to canon. When Mr. Lucas owned Star Wars, he had to sign off on any story, from films to novels. Now that Disney owns it, they are letting too many people add to the world and inconsistencies are cropping up because they are not communicating and there is not one decision maker to decide what is and what is not canon.

My take: This is Anakin after she left but before he fights Obi Wan at Mustafar. Ahsoka has lost her way because she blames herself for Anakin's fall. But shes going to see that it wasnt her and he would have fallen anyways, maybe killed her in the process. Sonetimes you cannot save the people you love. You can only leave. Shes going to understand this finally and it will allow her to leave the WBW with renewed balance etc and ready to truly reach Sabine, someone who can still be saved

20:00 disagree with you on Ahsoka getting to the new galaxy or bring Ezra through to her, don't forget the world between worlds isn't meant to be used as doorways to go from place to place. It's meant for knowledge not for transportation or time travel. She and Hera will connect with the Pergil and have them bring them to the other galaxy since the Pergil already know where to go.

Ryan - The Mortis Arc from Clone Wars can still be a force/fever dream, even with the mural in Rebels. The mural could have been created by others who have had similar force/fever dreams. The Father/Son/Daughter Holy Trinity are the stuff of myths and legends, which doesn't mean they are or were ever necessarily real, physical incarnations of the force.

You guys missed that Filoni said that the WBW can’t be used to enter in one place and come out the other so going to the other galaxy from there would be contradictory. It’s more likely that Ahsoka will pull Ezra out of a situation like he did for her or she would respawn/wake up where she “died”, connect with the Purgill like Ezra did and meet up with Hera to jump with them to the other galaxy

That "weight" in Baylan's lightsaber and the way he swung it around really sold it for me. They did a great job showing how Ahsoka was just simply overpowered by it. I rewatched all the episodes back-to-back and I think Ahsoka is much better if you just take it on face value. Once I put the years of theory and animated shows out of my mind and looked at the show almost as a reboot, it was more enjoyable and near perfect Star Wars in the same vein as A New Hope. The original trilogy was great because it just dropped you in the middle of the world, there was no homework or someone to explain it to you. I think the constant fan theories, speculation, critique, and easter egg hunting can hurt the enjoyment of a show like this.

Here’s what I wish is happening. The moment anakin turned to the dark side there was split. Because of his absurdly strong force connection, the light side of him was thrust into the world between worlds while his dark side version remained in the real world. This is how he was able to commit all the atrocities he does. Light side anakin pulls in ahsoka into the world between worlds. They go on to figure out a way to get to the galaxy where thrawn is and a real flesh and blood anakin joins ahsoka to take down thrawn. Once triumphant anakin returns back to the world between worlds and is reunited with dark side anakin sometime during the time of return of the Jedi. Which is how he is able to turn back to the light and help Luke defeat the emperor. Not gonna happen but I think it would be cool.
